As a lifeway and social change, the neighborhood build up around elementary school based on Perry's Neighbourhood Unit becomes change. Elementary School does not function as a center of residents' activity or community any longer. Activities occurred near the school move to the community streets that many facilities are distributed to, while utilization of facilities near schools becomes lower. On the bases of the current states, this study aims to draw a practical neighborhood center of residential areas by case study. The research is being mainly about low-rise residential areas in Seoul which includes one elementary school at least. In order to deduct the center of neighborhood, the survey takes two steps. At the preliminary survey, conduct the observation and do an interview to investigate awareness and actual status. Also to analyze practical center, do a main survey about land value, pedestrian volume, distribution of public transit and facility density. The research result shows that there is another activated center street not nearby elementary school in every case. This study assumes that the neighborhood center is not limited around elementary school and could variously build up by circumstances. It has significance that we present a question about the traditional theory and also could be references of the future city maintenance in the long term.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between children's walking safety or risk of traffic accident and the physical environments around 20 public elementary schools in Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Field surveys were conducted to assess the street-level objective and subjective walking environments. The GIS method was used for measuring the neighborhood-level land use patterns. Children's walking safety and risk of traffic accident data were collected from the 6,381 grade 5 to 6 students attending 18 elementary schools through the questionnaire survey. Correlation analysis showed that walking safety and risk of traffic accident of the elementary students were associated with the number of temporary or permanent obstacles on the sidewalk, traffic safety signs, driveway and street intersections, street lights, and percentage of detached housing area and road area on neighbourhood-level. This research will promote to help with constructing a safe routes to school and walking-friendly healthy community.

As a basic research for revitalization of cycling that is emerging as a means of green transportation, this study aims to analyze the impact of neighbourhood environmental factor perceived by the local residents on cycling satisfaction as the concern for energy and environmental issues is increasing. For this, a survey was conducted through a questionnaire to the residents in Sangju-si and the impact of the perceived neighbourhood environmental factor to cycling satisfaction with ordered logit model was analyzed. The result showed that the factors such as quality of bicycle lane, quality of bicycle conveniences, accessibility of major conveniences, safety of cycling and amenity of street made a significant impact on cycling satisfaction. Based on such result, this study suggested the considerations to be made in designing a cycling environment.
