A moment redistribution method was developed for earthquake design of reinforced concrete moment-resisting frames. For a frame designed with strong column-weak beam, the moment redistribution mechanism was investigated. Based on the result, the relationship between redistributed moment and plastic rotation in plastic hinges was established. By using the relationship, we developed a method for the evaluation of plastic rotations during the moment redistribution, addressing the effects of various design parameters including member stiffness, load condition, and plastic mechanism of structure.
The Truncated Moment Problem (TMP) entails finding a positive Borel measure to represent all moments in a finite sequence as an integral; once the sequence admits one or more such measures, it is known that at least one of the measures must be finitely atomic with positive densities (equivalently, a linear combination of Dirac point masses with positive coefficients). On the contrary, there are more general moment problems for which we aim to find a "signed" measure to represent a sequence; that is, the measure may have some negative densities. This type of problem is referred to as the General Truncated Moment Problem (GTMP). The Jordan Decomposition Theorem states that any (signed) measure can be written as a difference of two positive measures, and hence, in the view of this theorem, we are able to apply results for TMP to study GTMP. In this note we observe differences between TMP and GTMP; for example, we cannot have an analogous to the Flat Extension Theorem for GTMP. We then present concrete solutions to lower-degree problems.

The behavior of nose-deck system during launch was examined by three dimensionless launching parameters, such as the relative flexural stiffness, the relative nose weight, and the relative nose length. The techniques of optimizing the launching nose were illustrated and equations of relationship between relative nose weight and relative nose length were derived under minimum conditions of the launching negative and positive moment. Equations of maximum positive and negative moment were suggested under the conditions. The optimum design method of the launching nose was proposed in launched continuous girder bridges. It was found that the ideal launching nose was to design that with the relative nose weight of 0.167 and the relative nose length of 0.836 to minimize absolute values of the positive and negative moment during launch.
The steel-concrete double composite girder in the negative flexural region combines an additional concrete slab to the steel bottom flange to prevent the local steel buckling, however, the additional concrete slab may lower down the neutral axis of the composite section, which is a sensitive factor to the tensile stress restraint on the concrete deck. This is actually of great importance to the structural rationality and durability, but has not been investigated in detail yet. In this case, a series of 5.5 m-long composite girder specimens were tested by negative bending, among which the bottom slab configuration and the longitudinal reinforcement ratio in the concrete deck were the parameters. Furthermore, an analytical study concerning about the influence of bottom concrete slab thickness on the cracking and sectional bending-carrying capacity were carried out. The test results showed that the additional concrete at the bottom improved the composite sectional bending stiffness and bending-carrying capacity, whereas its effect on the concrete crack distribution was not obvious. According to the analytical study, the additional concrete slab at the bottom with an equivalent thickness to the concrete deck slab may provide the best contributions to the improvements of crack initiation bending moment and the sectional bending-carrying capacity. This can be applied for the design practice.

For continuous I-girder bridges, a large negative bending moment is generated near pier region so that plastic hinge is first formed at this point. Then, the bending moment is redistributed when the I-girder has enough flexural ductility (or rotational capacity). However, for I-girder with high strength steel, it is known that the flexural ductility is considerably decreased by increasing the yield strength of material. Thus, it is necessary to conduct a study for guaranteeing proper flexural ductility of I-girder with high-strength steel. In this study, the evaluation of flexural ductility of negative moment region of I-girder with high strength steel where yield stress of steel is 680 MPa is presented based on the results of finite element analysis and experiment. From the results, it is found that the flexural ductility of the I-girder is significantly reduced due to the increase of elastic deformation and the decrease of plastic deformation ability of the material when the yield strength increases. In this study, the method to improve the flexural ductility of I-girder with high strength steel is proposed by an unequal installation of cross beam and an optimal position of cross beam is also suggested. Finally, the effects of the unequal installation of cross beam on the flexural ductility are discussed based on the experimental results.
Lateral-torsional buckling moment resistances of I-shaped stepped beams with continuous lateral top-flange bracing under a single point load on the top flange and negative end moments were investigated. Stepped beam factors and a moment gradient correction factor suggested by Park et al. (2003, 2004) were used to develop new lateral buckling formula for beam designs. From the investigation of finite element analysis (FEA), new lateral buckling formula of beams with singly or doubly stepped member changes and with continuous lateral top-flange bracing subjected to a single point load on top flange and end moments were developed. The new design equation includes the length-to-height ratio factor to account for the increase of lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance as the increase of length-to-height ratio of stepped beams. The calculation examples for obtaining lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance using the new design equation indicate that engineers should easily determine the buckling capacity of the stepped beams.

It would be much effective that single column type pier is used in concrete slab bridges rather than gravity type pier is used. To determine the longitudinal bonging moment in concrete slab bridges supported by single column type piers, the concept of effective width is applied. By elastic plate theory cooperated with finite element method, the distribution of the longitudinal moment of the slab supported by single column type piers is studied. The main variables are span, width, and thickness of the slab and column section size. Then the analytical results obtained are summarized and analysed to evaluate the maximum longitudinal negative moment by simple beam analysis.
This paper is concerned with the behaviour of steel and concrete composite joints subjected to reversal of loading. Three cruciform composite joint specimens and one bare steel joint specimen were tested so that one side of the beam-to-column connection was under negative moment and another side under positive moment. The steelwork beam-to-column connections were made of bolted end plate with an extended haunch section. Composite slabs employing metal decking were used for all the composite joint specimens. The moment-rotation relationships for the joints were obtained experimentally. Details of the experimental observations and results were reported.
An experimental and a non linear finite element investigation on the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams stiffened in hogging moment region with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) sheets is presented in this paper. A total of five specimens were tested under two-point loads. Three of the composite beams included concrete slab while the other two beams had composite slabs. The stiffening was achieved by attaching CFRP sheets to the concrete surface at the position of negative bending moment. The suggested CFRP sheets arrangement enhanced the overall beam behavior and increased the composite beam capacity. Valuable parametric study was conducted using a three dimensional finite element model using ANSYS program. Both geometrical and material nonlinearity were included. The studied parameters included CFRP sheet arrangement, concrete strength and degree of shear connection.

This study proposes flexural failure design criteria of continuous slabs enhanced by a hybrid system of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and ultra high performance concrete (UHPC). The proposed hybrid retrofit system is designed to be placed at the top surface of the slabs for flexural strengthening of the sections in both positive and negative moment zones. The enhancing mechanisms of the proposed system for both positive and negative moment regions are presented. The neutral axis of the enhanced sections in positive moment zone at flexural failure is enforced to be in UHPC overlay for preventing the compression in FRP. From this condition, a relationship between design parameters of FRP and UHPC is established. Although the capacity of the proposed retrofit system to enhance flexural strength and ductility is confirmed through experiments of one-way RC slabs having two continuous spans, the retrofitted slabs failed in shear. To prevent this shear failure, a design criteria of flexural failure is proposed.
