  • Purpose: This study sought to investigate health behavior (HB) and its affecting factors based on Anderson's behavioral model in Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR). Also, it attempted to identify the mediation of the health locus of control (HLC) between HB and the affecting factors. Methods: Secondary data from 694 people without noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) from a survey conducted by the Ewha Womans and the Laos University were used. The measurements included predisposing, enabling, and needs factors, HLC, HB (current non-smoking, low-risk drinking, physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, medical checkup). The mediating effect was analyzed using Baron and Kenny's method and the Sobel test. Results: Predisposing (gender, educational level, ethnic), enabling (social support, item ownership in household) and the needs factors (body mass index) were affecting HB. Internal HLC had a positive influence on HB. The stronger the others and chance HLC, the lower the HB. Chance HLC mediated the relationship between the educational level and HB. Conclusion: There is a need to recognize the importance of chance HLC as a mediator between the educational level and HB. Through this result, high-quality nursing education for the prevention of NCDs should be developed considering the impact of chance HLC.

  • This study was designed to investigate the impact of a 12-week nutrition education program on 32 male industrial workers (average age: $44.5{\pm}3.8$ yrs, work duration period: $20.1{\pm}5.6$ yrs) diagnosed as having dyslipidemia in a medical checkup at their workplace. This program was implemented with a conceptual framework on strengthening self-efficacy for the improvement of the health conditions of the workers. Most of all, the study exhibited benefits in the industrial workers by ameliorating the risk factors associated with dyslipidemia via changes in dietary behaviors, nutritional knowledge, and attitudes, as well as anthropometric and biochemical parameters. After the nutrition education, overall lifestyle, including the ratios of smoking (P<0.05) and drinking (P<0.01), significantly improved. Exactly 65.6% of the subjects reported that their dietary habits changed. Body weight, BMI, percentage of body fat, and waist circumference all significantly decreased (P<0.001). The systolic (P<0.01) as well as diastolic blood pressures (P<0.001) decreased. Moreover, the degree of increase in serum HDL-cholesterol was appreciable (P<0.001), and the atherogenic index also decreased (P<0.01). Further, risk factors related to metabolic syndrome in subjects significantly decreased (P<0.001). The average scores for nutrition knowledge increased from 9.3 to 17.7 points (P<0.001). All of the participants agreed on the need for a nutrition education program at their workplace. Further, it should be pointed out that the participants strongly indicated the need for continuing nutrition intervention.

  • In order to increase the accuracy and efficiency in measuring obesity conducted outside the hospitals, we examined not only the Body Mass Index and cutoff values of waist circumference of 3,281 adults but also considered their gender, age and various body characteristics. This study included 1,505 males (45.9%) and 1,776 females (54.1%) who visited the comprehensive health checkup center. The average body fat content of male participants was 22.2%, and their Body Mass Index was 24.4kg/$m^2$. The average Body Mass Index of female participants was 22.9kg/$m^2$. The average of waist circumference of male subjects was 86.2cm while that of female subjects was 76.9cm. The conventional method to measure obesity using BMI and WC only does not reflect the actual body fat which may change according to one's gender and age. Therefore, for those who visit individual's place to measure obesity outside the hospitals only based on BMI and WC, we need a new standard to measure obesity more accurately.
