봉선화 꽃외화밀 생산에 곤충 초식이 미치는 영향 (Effects of insect herbivory on extrafloral nectar production of Impatiens balsamina)

  • 식물이 생산하는 꽃외화밀(extrafloral nectar)은 주로 단당류, 이당류로 구성되어 있는 액체로서, 개미나 기생벌 등 초식 곤충의 천적을 유인하는 식물의 간접 방어 수단으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구는 봉선화를 이용하여 봉선화 꽃외화밀의 생산이 곤충의 초식에 의해 어떻게 영향을 받는지 알아보고자 시도하였다. 실험은 곤충 초식 방식 두 가지 (잎을 씹어먹는 타입과 체관 액체를 빨아먹는 타입)를 인위적으로 처리하기 위해, 1) 봉선화 잎을 기계적으로 손상시키는 방법 (simulated herbivory), 2) 봉선화 잎을 기계적으로 손상시킨 후 자스몬산 그리고 나방 애벌레 타액이 섞인 토사물(regurgitate)의 두가지 유도물질(elicitor)을 잎에 처리하는 방법 (simulated herbivory + elicitor application), 3) 초식곤충인 진딧물을 봉선화 잎에 인위적으로 감염시키는 방법 (aphid feeding) 등 총 3가지 방법으로 식물을 처리하고, 이후 나타나는 봉선화의 꽃외화밀 생산량의 변화를 관찰하였다. 실험 결과, 봉선화 꽃외화밀의 생산은 기계적 손상, 기계적 손상+유도물질 처리에 영향을 받지 않았다. 이는 봉선화 꽃외화밀의 생산이 나비나 나방 애벌레 등 잎을 씹어먹는 방식으로 섭식하는 곤충의 초식에 의해서는 영향을 받지 않음을 시사한다. 반면에 진딧물 섭식에 의해서 봉선화 꽃외화밀의 생산량이 감소하였는데, 이는 진딧물 등의 체관 내용물을 빨아먹는 방식으로 섭식하는 곤충의 초식에는 봉선화 꽃외화밀의 생산이 부정적인 영향을 받음을 시사한다. 진딧물의 밀도와 꽃외화밀의 생산량 감소와는 상관성을 발견하지 못했는데, 이는 봉선화 잎의 꽃외화밀 생산에 미치는 진딧물의 영향이 광합성 산물의 일부가 진딧물에 의해 소모되기 때문에 생기는 결과라는 증거는 없다는 것을 시사한다.

Floral Visitors and Nectar Secretion of the Japanese Camellia, Camellia Japonica L.

  • We studied the nectar secretion of the Japanese Camellia (Camellia japonica L.), an evergreen tree and observed its floral visitors during the day. The mean volume of nectar secreted, during daylight (08:31 to 16:30 h) was 30.26$\pm8,29ml$ (SD) (n = 27). During the late afternoon and overnight (16:31 to 08:30 following day), 100.54$\pm54.85$(n = 27) of nectar was secreted. Total volume measured when flowers were sampled once every two hours for an eight-hour period was approximately one-half the volume which was measured when the flowers were sampled only once after eight hours. The mean nectar volume secreted was 8.55$\pm8.3ml$(n = 30) between 08:31 to 10:30, 4.38$\pm$6.1 ml (n = 30) between 10:31 to 12:30, 4.6$\pm5.4ml$(n = 30) between 12;31 to 14:30, and 4.02$\pm3.5ml$(n = 30) between 14:31 to 16:30 hours. During the day, Japanese Camellia flowers were principally visited by the Japanese white-eye (Zosterops erythropleura erythropleura 5.), a native bird, although insects and squirrels also visited to a lesser degree.

한국산 피나무속 식물의 개화와정과 수분기작 (Flowering Process and Pollination Mechanism of Genus Tilia in Korea)

  • An anthecological study of Tilia in Korea was undertaken for six native and one introduced species. Flowers are protoandrous with anther and stigma opening during the day-time in section(sect) Anastraea and the night-time in sect Astrophilyra. Nectar production was coincided with anther and stigma opening. It is revealed that the primary role of floral bracts was attracting pollinators especially in sect Astrophilyra. The peak of stamen and stigma function, and the production of nectar and odor were closely related with pollinator attraction. Forthy-three species of insects in 30 families were identified for the pollination studies; bees were the most commonly observed visitors in sect Anastraea, while moths were the primary visitors in sect Astrophilyra. Pollination study indicate that it is section specific. But within a section, pollination is not species specific thus interspecific hybridization occurs.

Selection of Early and Late Flowering Robinia pseudoacacia from Domesticated and Introduced Cultivars in Korea and Prediction of Flowering Period by Accumulated Temperature

  • The objectives of this study were to select early, late, and abundant flowering trees of black locust from domesticated and introduced cultivars, and prediction of flowering period by calculation of accumulated temperature in spring. Four cultivars (Debreceni-2, Pusztavacs, Jaszkiseri, and Rozsaszin AC) from Hungary and a cultivar from Beijing, China, were introduced, propagated by seed and planted in a seed orchard. For domesticated black locust, 63 cultivars from 10 locations throughout the country were selected and propagated by root cutting. Criteria for selection of domesticated cultivars were abundant flowering, long flowering period, or abundant nectar production with, if possible, straight stems. Accumulated temperature was calculated from data of a nearby weather station by accumulating daily maximum temperature minus 5 degree Celsius from January 1 up to the date reaching 880 degrees. Daily mean temperature was also used to calculate accumulated temperature up to the date reaching 450 degrees. The percentages of two-year and three-year-old flowering trees propagated by root cutting were higher than that of trees propagated by seeds, while four-year-old trees all flowered regardless of propagation methods. Among the domesticated cultivars, all the cultivars from Ganghwa showed abundant flowering with highest nectar production of 6.5 ul per flower, which was 100% more than other domesticated cultivars and 50% more than Debreceni-2 cultivar with highest nectar production among the introduced cultivars from Hungary. At the end of the eight years of observations, two trees of Debreceni-2 cultivars and a tree from Beijing, China were selected for early flowering trees which flowered 2 to 3 days earlier than average trees, while a tree of Debeceni-2 and three trees from Bejing were selected for late flowering trees which flowered 2 to 3 days later than average trees. It is possible to extend the flowering period of black locust by 4 to 6 days by planting early and late flowering cultivars together. Abundant flowering trees were unable to be selected due to severe damages by leaf gall midges which killed many trees and reduced the crown size of the remaining trees in the seed orchard, and which were first found in Korea in 2001 and now damaging most of the black locust forests in Korea. The prediction of flowering period by accumulated temperature indicated that black locust flowered to a peak when accumulated daily maximum temperature reached 880 degrees Celsius, and when daily mean temperature reached 450 degrees.

여왕봉(女王蜂)의 능력검정(能力檢定)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Performance-tests of honeybee queens(Apis mellifera) in Korea)

  • 본 연구는 여왕봉의 능력을 검정하여 우량여왕봉을 선발하고 또한 금후 우리나라의 여왕봉 능력검정체계 확립에 필요한 자료를 제시하고자 1988년 9월부터 1989년 8월까지 1년간에 걸쳐 대구 근교 양봉장에서 사양관리중인 서양종 봉군(Apis millifera) 30군을 대상으로 실시되었다. 각종 능력에 대한 검정결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 월동전 소상의 평균 무게는 $23.6{\pm}1.90kg$이었고 월동기간 중 봉군당 평균 $2.9{\pm}0.82kg$의 중량이 감소되었다. 봉군증식에 의한 계상설치는 4월 17일부터 5월 5일까지 행하여 졌으며 30군의 단상 봉군 가운데서 13군만이 계상이 설치되어 계상이용성이 낮았다. 화분수집 능력을 나타내는 24시간 동안의 화분수집량은 군당 평균 $14.8{\pm}2.15gr$이었으며, 분봉성의 강약을 나타내는 왕대형성수는 군당 평균이 $12.5{\pm}3.43$개이었다. 봉교생산성은 보통이었고, 외역 활동후 소상으로 돌아오는 외역봉 수는 1분간 군당 $108.7{\pm}18.31$마리이었다. 산란능력을 나타내는 봉개소비면적은 군당 평균이 $2,464{\pm}628.67cm^2$이었고 석고병 감염율은 30.8%이었다. 아카시아 유밀기에 있어서 2차에 걸친 총 채밀량은 군당 평균이 $14.5{\pm}8.49kg$이었다.

Occurrence of an invertase producing strain of Aspergillus niger LP5 isolated from longan pollen and its application in longan syrup production to feed honey bees (Apis mellifera L.)

  • Background: In northern Thailand, the longan flower is the principal nectar source for honey production. Microorganisms play a critical function in the agricultural ecology. The morphological characteristics of fungal species found in longan pollen were studied. Aspergillus spp. were found to be invertase-producing strains and were employed in the longan syrup production process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of invertase-added longan syrup on the adult honey bee population numbers that were fed by this syrup for 16 weeks. Results: Different fungal species were found in longan pollen samples. Aspergillus was the main genus, with three predominant sections: Nigri, Flavi, and Terrei. Other isolated species were Trichoderma spp., Rhizopus spp., Neurospora spp., Chaetomium spp., Fusarium spp. and Penicillium spp. However, Aspergillus spp. is the only fungal species that produces the enzyme invertase. The invertase-producing strains belonging to the Aspergillus section Nigri were found to be A. niger LP5 with an optimum activity at pH 6.0 and 60℃. When A. niger LP5 invertase was used for longan syrup processing, the highest levels of glucose (3.45%) and fructose (2.08%) were found in invertase added longan syrup (C), while fresh (A) and boiled longan syrup (B) had lower contents of both sugars. The sucrose content was detected in (A) at 4.25%, while (B) and (C) were at 4.02% and 3.08%, respectively. An appropriate amount of sugar to feed and maintain the honey bee population was considered. The data showed no statistically significant differences between the two selected forms of longan syrup compared to the sugar syrup examined by the adult honey bee population. Conclusions: The main species of isolated fungi from longan pollen were Aspergillus spp. The discovery of an invertase-producing strain of A. niger LP5 has enabled its application for enzyme utilization in the invert sugar preparation process. The adult worker bee populations fed by longan syrup from both boiled and invertase-added sources showed an increasing trend. Artificial syrup made from longan fruit to feed honey bees when natural food sources are limited can be applied.

The 200 kinds of processed secondary products are approximately produced in the form of 20 kinds of ginseng products by about 60 domestic companies. In spite of about 213.000 million won of domestic market in 1993. it seems like that the ginseng market of the future has not a good prospects The total market sale of white ginseng in Korea has been continuously decreased since 1991 And 963 tons of white ginseng was consumed in domestic market in 1993 The domestic market sales of white ginseng in origina1 root shave. was 90, 000 million won in 1993 and market price of the fine root used as a source of processed products has not been changed in these ten years. The total market sale of red ginseng and its processed products was 58, 000 million won in 1993 9.800 mi11ion won of red ginseng in original root shape and 48.000mi11ion of processed red ginseng product. Ginseng products such as extracts, drinks, teas and tonics etc atre mostly exported to south-east Asia. And the total exports of ginseng pi.oducts (extracts, drinks teas) decreased to 54 million dollars in 1994, compared with 85 million dollars in 1992. Despite of extensive knowledge about ginseng little is still known about the development of new processed ginseng pl.oducts because of "Know-How". Some papars have presented the effects of extracting method(amounts of solvent. time. temperature, equipment. etc.) on the quality and yields of ginseng extr acts. Also. some researchers have carried out a few studies on the poriflcation of the extracts and the amounts of precipitation in the drink at variotas pH during the storage for preventinly drink from precipitation. A fell studies on the preservation of Korean ginseng powder. tea. Extract powder by irradiation and ozone treatment have been reported by some researcher for the improvement hygienic quality of ginseng products There are also some reports about the effects of ginseng components on the acid production by lactic acid bacteria or acetic acid bacteria. and alcohol production by yeast for the development of new ginseng products processed by fermentation. To make ginseng more able to contribute to the health of mankind in the future. consistent and considerable efforts should be focussed on improving the taste of ginseng and developing various new product as a health food or a function food.tion food.

Prevalence of Nosema and Virus in Honey Bee (Apis mellifera L.) Colonies on Flowering Period of Acacia in Korea

  • Honey production from approximately 1.6 million colonies owned by about 199,000 Korean beekeepers was almost 23,000 metric tons in 2009. Nosema causes significant losses in honey production and the virus decreases population size. We initiated a survey of honey bee colonies on the blooming period of Acacia to determine the prevalence of Nosema and virus in 2011. Most Korean beekeepers have moved from the south to north of Korea to get Acacia nectar for 2 mon. This provided a valuable opportunity to sample bees originating from diverse areas in one location. Twenty hives owned by 18 beekeepers were sampled in this year. Nosema spore counts ranged from zero to 1,710,000 spores per bee. The average number of nosema spores per bee was 580,000. Approximately 95% of the colonies were infected with Nosema, based on the presence of spores in the flowering period of Acacia. This indicates that Nosema is the predominant species affecting honeybee colonies. Also, the seven most important honeybee viruses were investigated by reverse transcription-PCR. Among them, four different viruses were detected in samples. Black queen cell virus was present in all samples. Chronic bee paralysis virus was detected in 10% of samples. Deformed wing virus was present in only 5% of the samples. Prevalence of Sacbrood virus was 15%. However, Cloudy wing virus, Israel acute paralysis virus and kashmir bee virus were not detected in any of samples.

능력검정에 의한 우량 종봉 선발에 관한 연구 (Selection of superior breeding colonies of Apis mellifera based on performance-testing)

  • 본 연구는 여왕별의 능력검정 및 선발기술을 확립하기 위하여 1999년 11월부터 2001년 10월까지 상주시 내서연 능암리 산 246번지에 있는 양봉장에서 서양종 봉군(Apis millifera)을 대상으로 실시되었는데, 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1999~2000 월동 기간 중 월동 전 후의 벌통무게는 $22.6{\pm}2.6kg$$20.1{\pm}2.6kg$로서 월동기간 중 벌통 무게 감소량은 $2.5{\pm}0.7kg$였다. 월동 2차 연도인 2000~2001 월동 기간 중 월동 전 벌통무게는 $22.6{\pm}2.3kg$이었으나 월동기간 중 벌통무게는 $2.3{\pm}0.6kg$이 감소되었다. 아까시꿀 채밀 직전에 조사된 착봉소비 매수는 2000년 5월 22일에 $13.1{\pm}4.6$매였으나, 2001년 5월 21일에는 $16.0{\pm}3.8$애였고, 계상이용율은 2000년에 50%이었으나 2001년에는 98.5%이었다. 아카시 유밀기에 있어서 2차에 걸쳐 채밀한 군당 평균 채밀량은 2000년에는 $12.7{\pm}8.6kg$이었으나 2001년에는 비선발군에서 $14.2{\pm}7.6kg$ 그리고 검정선발여왕벌 봉군에서 $23.5{\pm}4.9kg$이었다.
