  • Thixomolding of Mg-alloy is a semi-solid injection molding process utilizing thixotropic phenomenon. Using this process, higher strength, thinner wall section and tighter tolerance without porosity are obtained. It has been applied for production of near-net-shape magnesium component. To design optimal thixomolding process of Mg-alloy part, molding conditions such as slurry temperature, mold temperature and injection time should be determined properly. Selection of these parameters has been dependent upon engineers' experience and intuitiveness. In this paper, to improve mechanical properties of the thixomolded product, optimal selection of process variables such as injection velocity, barrel temperature and die temperature in the process has been studied through microstructural analysis and Taguchi method. Performance of the process is verified through experiments.

  • As a promising and novel manufacturing technology, laser aided direct metal deposition (DMD) process produces near-net-shape functional metal parts directly from 3-D CAD models by repeating laser cladding layer by layer. The key of the build-up mechanism is the effective control of powder delivery and laser power to be irradiated into the melt-pool. A feedback control system using two sets of optical height sensors is designed for monitoring the melt-pool and real-time control of deposition dimension. With the feedback height control system, the dimensions of part can be controlled within designed tolerance maintaining real time control of each layer thickness. Clad nugget shapes reveal that the feedback control can affect the nugget size and morphology of microstructure. The pore/void level can be controlled by utilizing pulsed-mode laser and proper design of deposition tool-path. With the present configuration of the control system, it is believed that more innovation of the DMD process is possible to the deposition of layers in 3-D slice.

  • Tube Process(TP) is one of the processes to produce permanent magnets. Advantage claimed for this process is that it can accmplish both densification and anisotropication in one step forming. This process is distinguished from other processes since it uses deformable tube for densification of powder magnets. TP has, however, difficulties in manufacturing permanent magnets from Nd-Fe-B green powder due to folding resulted from large height reduction and localized densification. Therefore, an adequate preform is necessary to reduce folding resulted from large height reduction and localized densification. Therefore, an adequate preform is necessary to reduce folding, lead magnets into almost desired final shape and get uniform densification. In this paper, preform design for TP is carried out without a deformable tube to investigate the behaviour of magnet sinter-forging. Preform design is accomplished to increase the effective magnet area with a near net shape and uniform densification.

  • Piston crown to the hot forge a unified nature of the product has a shape with multi-level step forging process, so if you are not a mechanical professional, this process could lead to a significant loss to the material. Therefore, material technology in minor terms; continue to improve the collection rate that undamaged the product material. The piston crown and the manufacturing products such as marine diesel engines are being forged to reduce costs and to improve mechanical properties. Piston crown molding is a hot forging process that works in large volume forging products. Because of the size of the hard plastic material flow process for improving the design and actual field experience through advanced plastic technology, it is important to interpret the results. Also for many experimental plastic procedures, the accumulation of results is very important.

  • As in other areas of materials technology, the tendency towards light weight constructions becomes more and more important also for powder metallurgy. The development is mainly driven by the automotive industry looking for mass reduction of vehicles as a major factor for fuel economy. Powder metallurgy has to offer a number of interesting areas including the development of sintered materials of light metals. PM aluminium alloys with improved properties are on the way to replace ferrous pars. For high temperature applications in the engine, titanium aluminide based materials offer a great potential, e.g. for exhaust valves. The PM route using elemental powders and reactions sintering is considered to be a cost effective way for net shape parts production. Furthermore it is expected that lower costs for titanium raw materials coming from metallurgical activities will offer new chances for sintered parts with titanium alloys. The field of cellular metals expands with the hollow sphere technique, that can provide materials of many metals and alloys with a great flexibility in structure modifications. These structures are expected to be used in improving the safety (crash absoption) and noise reduction in cars in the near future and offer great potential for many other applications.

  • A semi-solid forming processing has been developed for manufacturing near net-shape components. The semi-solid forming has two methods. One is thixo-forming with reheating prepared billet, the other is rheo- forming with cooled melt until semi-solid state. In indirect forging processing, this experiment used aluminum rheology materials by electromagnetic stirring system. Rheology material is made by A16061. An experiment has variation factors which are pressure, solid-fraction, stirring current and stirring time. Forged samples are found microstructures and mechanical properties. Forged samples are accomplished heat treatment T6 for high mechanical properties.

  • The near net shape forging of gears offers significant technical and economic advantages ever other forms of manufacture. These potential benefits can however only be realized by careful die design. This paper describes a computer-based methodology fur achieving this. A Visual-BASIC program has been developed on a rule based system that enables optimal design of the dies taking into account the elastic deflections generated in shrink-fitting the die inserts and that caused by the stresses generated in the forging process. The method also enables the profile of the spark erosion electrode to be determined. An example of the application to forging spur gears is given.

  • A combination of deep drawing and cold forging process is tried to achieve near net shaping of automatic transmission part which has drum shape and thickness variation. It is key for successful shaping of the part to find out proper condition to combine two different forming methods. Finite element analysis can be utilized for that purpose effectively. Integrity, reliability, and durability of the part are improved by eliminating machining process. The developed process is applied in real manufacturing process successfully.

  • Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing process by melting metallic powders and stacking into layers, and can product complex shapes or near-net-shape (NNS) that are difficult to product by conventional processes. Also, SLM process is able to raise the efficiency of production by creating a streamlined manufacturing process. For manufacturing in SLM process using Ti-6Al-4V powder, analysis of microstructural evolution and evaluation of mechanical properties are essential because of rapid melting and solidification process of powders according to high laser power and rapid scan speed. In addition, it requires a post-processing because the soundness and mechanical properties are degraded by defects such as pore, un-melted powder, lack-of-fusion, etc. In this study, hot isostatic press (HIP) was conducted as a post-processing on SLM-printed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Microstructure of post-processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy was compared to as-built Ti-6Al-4V, and the evolution of quasi-static (Vickers hardness, room temperature tensile characteristic) and dynamic (high-cycle fatigue characteristic) mechanical properties were analyzed.
