Small form factor optical disks for near-field optics using solid immersion lens were developed. Disk durability properties in terms of head-disk interface (HDI) properties were investigated by drag test, diamond like carbon film and lubricant film were coated on the small form factor disk to enhance HDI. Disks with glass substrates and lubricant films after heat treatment showed more durable characteristics. Coverlayers made of UV resin were uniformly coated by spin coating In which the ski-jump could not be formed by adopting outer ring technique.

Purpose: This study was designed to compare the accommodative amplitude whose 40s initial presbyopia patients divided into five occupation (driver, official worker, housewife, field worker, teacher). Methods: Both "push-up"and "inus lens to blur technique" methods were used to examine the average of accommodative amplitude. Results: All the average of accommodative amplitude (OD, OS, and OU) were the lowest in official worker group (3.27${\pm}$0.21D, 3.31${\pm}$0.22D, 3.54${\pm}$0.28D) and the highest in housewife group (4.07${\pm}$0.35D, 4.11${\pm}$0.35D, 4.37${\pm}$0.39D). Conclusions: Because occupational specifications including a fixative habit are able to change the binocular accommodation, it is important to understand thoroughly the patient's occupation when opticians make near vision prescription for initial presbyopia.

We report a nanometer scale mark formation using a $PtO_x$ thin film or a TbFeCo rare-earth transition metal film and the mechanism. The multi-layer samples($ZnS-SiO_2/PtOx/ZNS-SiO_2,\;ZnS-SiO_2/TbFeCo/ZnS-SiO_2$) were prepared with a magnetron sputtering method on a polycarbonate or a glass substrate. By laser irradiation of approximately a few nanoseconds, nanometer scale marks were fabricated. During the fabrication process, the thin films were thermally reacted or inter-diffused during the laser irradiation. 75 nm bubble marks in the PtOx multi-layer sample by an approximately 4-ns laser irradiation. Inside the bubble mark, Pt particles with a few nanometer sizes are distributed. The $50{\sim}100$ nm bubble marks in the TbFeCo multi-layer sample by a few nanosecond laser irradiations. We will report the detail structure of the samples, the bubble mark formation process and the mechanism.
We introduce a display for virtual-reality (VR) fire training. Firefighters prefer to wear and operate a real breathing apparatus while experiencing full visual immersion in a VR fire space. Thus, we used a thin head-mounted display (HMD) with a light field and folded optical system, aiming to both minimize the volume for integration in front of the face into a breathing apparatus and maintain adequate visibility, including a wide viewing angle and resolution similar to that of commercial displays. We developed the optical system testing modules and prototypes of the integrated breathing apparatus. Through iterative testing, the thickness of the output optical module in front of the eyes was reduced from 50 mm to 60 mm to less than 20 mm while maintaining a viewing angle of 103°. In addition, the resolution and image quality degradation of the light field in the display was mitigated. Hence, we obtained a display with a structure consistent with the needs of firefighters in the field. In future work, we will conduct user evaluation regarding fire scene reproducibility by combining immersive VR fire training and real firefighting equipment.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an effective method to reduce near-field speckle noise at the output of a 50 ${\mu}m$ graded index multimode fiber using a short cylindrical piezoelectric transducer(PZT) vibrating in the radial direction. The fiber was coiled as tightly as possible around the mandrel of the PZT and a periodic stretching effect was caused by the radial oscillations of the actuator. The output of the optical fiber using the He-Ne laser source was intensively observed by a CCD camera. By counting all the pixels corresponding to relative intensity graded into 256 levels in the selected area and by calculating standard deviation and mean value of the intensity, we could measure the speckle contrast and vibration effect quantitatively with reduction ratio of pixels and line profile of the illuminated region. It was clearly observed that the characteristics of the speckle pattern in the vibration-on state were significantly improved over that of the vibration-off state due to time-averaged smoothing.
The near-field subwavelength squint-less focusing system of a phased array antenna is designed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. The Huygens-Fresnel principle is applied to numerical simulation for calculation of the phased array antenna at microwave frequency. It was shown that beam squinting can be eliminated, utilizing true-time optical delay lines based on a chirped fiber grating in the proposed system. Furthermore, subwavelength focusing with high numerical aperture can be achieved by considering the fact that the array elements of the phased-array antenna can be treated as diffractive elements in an optical lens system. Also, side lobes can be suppressed by decreasing the distance between element antennas to less than half of the wavelength.
Purpose: A simple and efficient method to prepare nanocrystalline ZnO thin film with pure strong UV emission on soda-lime-silica glass substrates by low-temperature annealing was improved. Methods: Crystal structural, surface morphological, and optical characteristics of nanocrystalline ZnO thin films deposited on soda-lime-silica glass substrates by prefiring final annealing process at 300$^{\circ}C$ were investigated by using X-ray diffraction analysis, field emission-scanning electron microscope, scanning probe microscope, ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectrophotometer, and photoluminescence. Results: Highly c-axis-oriented ZnO films were obtained by prefiring at 300$^{\circ}C$. A high transmittance in the visible spectra range and clear absorption edge in the ultra violet range of the film was observed. The PL spectrum of ZnO thin film with a deep near band edge emission was observed while the defect-related broad green emission was nearly quenched. Conclusions: Our work will be possibly adopted to cheaply and easily fabricate ZnO-based optoelectronic devices at low temperature, below 300$^{\circ}C$, in the future.

To numerically calculate electromagnetic scattering from the electrical-large three-dimensional(3D) objects, the high-frequency approaches have been usually applied, but the accuracy and feasibility of these geometrical and physical optics(GO-PO) approaches, to some extent, are remained to be improved. In this paper, a new framework is developed for calculation of the near-field scattering field of an electrical-large 3D target by using a multilevel fast multipole algorithm(MLFMA) and generation of radar images by using a fast back-projection(FBP) algorithm. The MPI(Message Passing Interface) parallel computing is carried out to multiply the calculation efficiency greatly. Finally, a simple example of perfectly electrical conducting(PEC) patch and a canonical case of Fighting Falcon F-16 are presented.
