  • One of the main unresolved issues in large-eddy simulation(LES) of wall-bounded turbulent flows is the requirement of high spatial resolution in the near-wall region, especially in the spanwise direction. Such high resolution required in the near-wall region is generally used throughout the computational domain, making simulations of high Reynolds number, complex-geometry flows prohibitive. A grid-embedding strategy using a nonconforming spectral domain-decomposition method is proposed to address this limitation. This method provides an efficient way of clustering grid points in the near-wall region with spectral accuracy. LES of transitional and turbulent channel flow has been performed to evaluate the proposed grid-embedding technique. The computational domain is divided into three subdomains to resolve the near-wall regions in the spanwise direction. Spectral patching collocation methods are used for the grid-embedding and appropriate conditions are suggested for the interface matching. Results of LES using the grid-embedding strategy are promising compared to LES of global spectral method and direct numerical simulation. Overall, the results show that the spectral domain-decomposition grid-embedding technique provides an efficient method for resolving the near-wall region in LES of complex flows of engineering interest, allowing significant savings in the computational CPU and memory.

  • We investigated the neural correlates of accurate eyewitness memory retrieval using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. We analyzed oxygenated hemoglobin ($HbO_2$) concentration in the prefrontal cortex during eyewitness memory retrieval task and examined regional $HbO_2$ differences between observed objects (target) and unobserved objects (lure). We found that target objects elicited increased activation in the bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, which is known for monitoring retrieval processing via bottom-up attentional processing. Our results suggest bottom-up attentional mechanisms could be different during accurate eyewitness memory retrieval. These findings indicate that investigating retrieval mechanisms using functional near-infrared spectroscopy might be useful for establishing an accurate eyewitness recognition model.

  • Workers who work at indoor and outdoor environment near busy road are suspected to be exposed to high-elevated air pollutant levels during working hours. This study evaluated the working-time nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) exposure for workers (repairmen and polishers) of shoe-stalls. Since shoe-stalls have particularly been located near busy road in Korea, workers might be high exposure to $NO_2$ from traffic exhaust as well as indoor sources of shoe-stall such as portable gas range (butane gas) during working hours. In this study, we measured the indoor and outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations of shoe-stalls. Simultaneously, outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations of building through sidewalk from shoe-stall were measured. High $NO_2$ exposure for workers of shoe-stalls was considered to be inflow of outdoor source of exhausted emission from vehicles and indoor source from usage of gas range to polish the shoe. Indoor/outdoor $NO_2$ concentration ratio ($0.94{\pm}0.22$) in Seoul was higher than that ($1.06{\pm}0.34$) in Asan, because ambient $NO_2$ level was high in Seoul and usage of gas range was prevalent in Asan. According to $NO_2$ concentrations by distance from roadside to building through sidewalk, $NO_2$ concentrations showed the decreased trend with distance. The results of this study can be utilized by municipal authorities in urban planning for evaluating effects of future traffic planning and land use.

  • This study was conducted to measure fat contents of potatochips by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Both potatochip powder and potatochips were used to find correlations between the absorbance at certain wavelengths find the fat contents. Based on the correlation analysis, linear regression models predicting the fat contents were developed to predict the fat contents. Artificial neural network (ANN) models were also developed. Predicted values were compared to the measured ones. The regression and the ANN model predicting the fat contents of potatochip powder had determination coefficients of 0.93 and 0.92, and standard errors of prediction (SEP) of 1.29% and 1.17%, respectively. The correlation analysis of potatochips showed that the determination coefficients were low. Therefore, the fat contents of not potatochips but potatochip powder could be measured by NIRS.

  • We report preliminary results of long-slit near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) with moderate resolution of R ~ 2400. We obtained Jshort (1.04-1.26 micron) and Ks (2.02-2.31 micron) band spectra of 4 LBVs and 3 LBV candidates in Southern hemisphere using IRIS2, infrared imager and spectrograph, mounted on the 4-m Anglo-Australian Telescope. All targets are fairly bright in NIR so that we can obtain high signal-to-noise ratio for clear line detection and modeling. They are also widely distributed in the HR diagram so that we can compare the spectral properties of LBVs in different temperature and luminosity ranges. Among them, we present the results of two well-known LBVs AG Car and HR Car. Their spectra show similar properties with hydrogen, He I, and metallic lines such as Fe II and Mg II, most of them in emission. We discuss, in particular, the He I 1.083 micron lines formed in stellar wind because these two LBVs show large variation in their He I line intensities, compared to previous studies. Since the He I 1.083 line is known to be anticorrelated with the photometric variation of LBVs, strong line intensities with P-Cygni profiles in both stars indicate that they are now near the visual minimum phase. We model the obtained spectra using non-LTE atmosphere code CMFGEN of Hillier (1998) to derive stellar parameters such as wind velocity and mass loss rate, and discuss the long-term variability of stellar parameters of these LBVs. deduced from our otometric solution.

  • We fabricated thermally evaporated 30 nm-Ni/(20 nm or 60 nm)a-Si:H/Si films to investigate the energy-saving property of silicides formed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at temperatures of $350^{\circ}C$, $450^{\circ}C$, $550^{\circ}C$, and $600^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. A transmission electron microscope (TEM) and a high resolution X-ray diffractometer (HRXRD) were used to determine the cross-sectional microstructure and phase changes. A UVVIS-NIR and FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) were employed for near-IR and middle-IR absorbance. Through TEM and HRXRD analysis, for the nickel silicide formed at low temperatures below $450^{\circ}C$, we confirmed columnar-shaped structures with thicknesses of $20{\sim}30\;nm$ that had ${\delta}-Ni^2Si$ phases. Regarding the nickel silicide formed at high temperatures above $550^{\circ}C$, we confirmed that the nickel silicide had more than 50 nm-thick columnar-shaped structures with a $Ni_{31}Si_{12}$ phase. Through UV-VIS-NIR analysis, nickel silicide showed almost the same absorbance in the near IR region as well as ITO. However, in the middle IR region, the nickel silicides with low temperature showed similar absorbance to those from high temperature silicidation.
