  • To investigate the variation of tidal front in the southwestern sea of Korea, tidal currents were simulated. Tidal front proposed by a criterion parameter (log H/U$^3$)=1.5-2.0 was found further offshore by about 30-50 km in spring tide than in neap tide. This variation is comparable with the observed about 20-60km by satellite image of sea surface temperature (SST). Observed front by satellite is further offshore by about 10-30km than calculated region in southwestern region.

  • The mass transport is very complicated at the area which has the macro tide and complex geometry such as Gyeonggi bay. Especially, the long period current has a strong influence on the estuarine ecosystem and the long-term distribution of substances. The long period current is caused by several external forcing, whose unique characteristic varies spatially and temporally. The variation characteristics of long period current is analysed and its generation mechanism is studied. The tidal nonlinear constituents such as overtide and compound tide are generated due to nonlinear interaction and it causes mean sea level setup. The tidal wave propagating up into estuary is transformed rapidly by decrease of cross-sectional area and depth. Therefore the mean sea level is getting rise toward upriver. The high and low tide level is similar between down-river(Incheon) and up-river(Ganghwa) during neap tide when the tidal deformation is decreased. The tidal phase difference between two tidal stations causes a periodic fluctuation of sea level difference. The low water level of Ganghwa station during spring tide does not descend under EL(-)2.5 m, but the low water level of Incheon fall down under EL(-)4.0 m. The variation of tidal range and its sea level are increased during spring tide. It is found that the long period current $M_{sf}$ is quite similar to that of sea level difference between the two tidal stations. It means that the sea surface inclination caused by the spatial difference of tidal deformation is important forcing for the generation of long period current.

  • When industrial wastewater containing fluoride runs into the ocean, approximately 0.1ppm of F$\^$-/ will react with seawater and will be eventually lost, and the remaining F$\^$-/ can be determined withe the ALC. Therefore F$\^$-/ is eligible to be used as a tracer of pollutant which contains fluoride. Determination of F$\^$-/ in the seawater with the Dotite reagent, Alfusone, has been made by the following method: To 10 ml of water sample, 1 ml of buffer solution (pH=4.0), 8 ml of acetone, and 1ml of 10% Alfusone were added and diluted to 25ml with distilled water. After 20 minutes the absorbance at 620 nm against a reagent blank was measured. The distributions of F$\^$-/ in Jinhae Bay has been made on the basis of water samples collected from 103 different sampling stations occupied in Jinhae Bay. The water samplings, three in the spring tide and two in the neap tide, were taken from surface layer during the flood and ebb tide periods respectively. The average concentration of F$\^$-/ in the bay, except the area to which the wastewater runs off from the Chemical plant, was 1.45 ppm(1.07-6.33ppm), and that of F$\^$-/ in the plant effluent was 330ppm, occasionally up to 562 ppm. Thus high levels of F$\^$-/ in the bay are strongly correlated to the amount of effluent from the plant, and waters of Jinhae Bay contains at least 0.13% of the plant effluent.

  • Cheonan, Republic of Korea Navy patrol ship sank had happened by an unknown incident in the vicinity of Baekryeongdo southwest 1.6km(1 mile) sea at 21:45 on March 26, 2010. In terms of coastal researcher's point of view, it is meaningful to provide the sea condition of basic data necessary for search and rescue, more detailed predictions and inference data through the numerical simulations. Thus, in this study, we investigated the weather, wave, tide, tidal current, bottom soil conditions, and suspended sediment are investigated at the coast of Baekryeong-Daechung islands. And based on these data, the characteristics of sea conditions were analyzed. The tidal period at the time of incident corresponds between neap tide to mean tide. Until April 3-4 after March 26, the date of incident, the strongest velocity was progressed towards the spring tide. Thus, it was considered to be difficult to search and rescue operations. Also, because the ebb tide was in progress during 21:00 to 22:00, mass transport seems to be prevailed to the southeast. In particular, as the sudden turbulence due to the irregular topography existed was anticipated, we had carried out particle tracking experiment. From this experiment, depending on the situation of flow, the initial movement of the particles were directed to the southeast but it turned out moving towards the offshore based on the long term prediction. Through this result, it is considered that the scope of the search operation should be expanded towards the open sea.

  • Generally, It is Introduced to well-known other models without considering tidal current of the field. The paper presents field measurements and numerical model solving velocity field of Cheonsu Bay by two-dimensional tidal model. It was proved that this scheme is easy to handle complex topography. Computed results is represented characteristics of tidal current for Cheonsu Bay. The results of the study can be summarized as follows ; 1. Tide form number has 0.21 value. Tidal range estimated 630.3 cm on spring, 454.1 cm on mean and 277.9 cm on neap, respectively 2. Tidal current has semi-diurnal form. Distance of traveling observed 16.6 km on flood and 15.5 km on ebb. 3. Tidal velocity showed reversing current. It was found that tidal velocity above 100 cm/sec is about 20 %. 4. Computed results are in good agreement with the observed data. Applying the algorithm to Cheonsu Bay, velocity fields and dry bank phenomena are simulated well in spite of complex topography. 5. An advanced study on the effects of open boundary conditions should be continuously performed.

  • Tidal propagation in the Keum River has been routinely handled by numerical integration of the long fravity wave equation by Dronkers. The dynamic equations include non-linear terms thereby reproducing the shallow water tides. The model was used to compute tidal distribution of the Kum River for aveage spring, mean, neap tidal conditions and further utilised to investigate the waterlevel response within tidal reaches by combined tide and flood discharge effects. The objective of this initial study is to investigate the tidal dynamics of the lower reaches of the Keum River under the condition of before-cross-channel barrage construction.

  • In this paper, we have studied the seasonal vanatIons of near-field dilutions of wastewater discharged from the submerged mutiport-diffuser in Masan Bay. Seasonal changes of temperature and salinity, and tidal currents were measured at 16 stations in Masan Bay. Based on the observed ambient field data, the seasonal changes of near-field dilutions due to ambient current and density fields were calculated by CORMIX model. Because of the shallow ambient water depth of 15 m, the density profiles are isopycnal in autumn and winter seasons, in which the dilution factors were the highest, 168 with the strong spring-tidal current and 110-120 with the weak neap-tidal current. As the season changes from spring to summer, the dilution factors are considerably reduced by the factor of 2 as the thermocline is getting deepened up to Sm in depth in summer. In the case of a weak ambient current, the dilution factor in summer was reduced to 1/4 of the dilution in winter. However, with strong ambient current the difference between summer and winter dilutions becomes relatively small by 30%. The results indicate that the seasonal variation of near-field dilution is very large up to 4 times with a weak neap-tidal current, but its variations become small under a strong ambient current of spring tide in MasanBay.

  • The purpose of this study is to offer the basic data of the tidal river development program by grasping the diffusion between the high density-sea water and the low density-fresh water in the tidal river. The tidal range of Hyungsan river which flows at Youngil bay in Pohang was selected to analysis the phenomenon of density current. The results obtained are as follows ; The tide of Youngil bay was one time a day, 0.104m in high tide difference and 0.085m in mean tidy difference. The change of sea level by tide was negligible. The volume of reserved water by sea water was $2,700,000m^3$ and available water of irrigation was $1,200,000m^3$ that salt density is below $750{\mu}{\mho}/cm$ out of total volume. Salt intrusion phenomenon by density current was a little water level change, however, it become a salt wedge type by the much salt invasion during the spring tide and it makes a well-mixed type by the retreating salt wedge during the neap tide. As long as there were some density differences between sea water and fresh water, net upstream flow was existed along the bottom of water way from the estuary to the upstream channel.

  • We have monitored nutrients, chlorophyll, suspended solids, and salinity in the Keum Estuary to understand the temporal fluctuation of oceanographic parameters and to illustrate any variation due to the gate operation of the Keum River Dike from June, 1995 to September, 1996, approximately for 500 days. Tidal range is used as the key factor to explain the fluctuations and atmospheric parameters such as air temperature, wind velocity and rainfall are also used supplementally. The fresh water discharge was selected as another major impact on the estuarine environment due to the gate operation of the Keum Dike. In addition, daily variation by tidal cycle was investigated twice in April and July, 1996. In diurnal variation, salinity was positively correlated with tidal elevation, whereas negatively correlated with nutrients. Relatively high suspended solid and chlorophyll contents were found in the period between high and low tide. In 500 days continuous observations, salinity was negatively correlated with the volume of fresh-water discharge, but positively correlated with nutrients. A major chlorophyll bloom occurred in spring. A similar pattern of variation was observed between suspended solid and the neap-spring tidal cycle. In comparison with the data of the Keurn Estuary before the gate operation of the Keum River dike, fresh-water discharge predominated other environmental factors during the rainy season. In addition, the velocity of tidal current and the concentration of suspended solid were decreased, while nutrients and chlorophyll contents were increased.

  • Even though it is well known that the tidal current in the East China Sea rotates clockwise, few report can be found about the precise pattern of it. To furnish some information available for the stow net fishermen, the author carried out the observation over 235 semidiurnal tidal cycle to investigate the pattern of the set and the rate of tidal current in the Korean fishing section 250 and 494, by reading the current meter and by tracing the corner reflectors with radar onboard the anchored obsen'ation vessel, from May 12, 1984 through February 27, 1986. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The mean semidiurnal tidal cycle was 12 h 20 m during spring tide, and 12 h 30 m during neap tide. 2. The mean interval from the calculated time of high water until the current began to set north was 2 h 30 m and 2 h 15 m in the fishing section 250 and 494 respectively, and the mean interval from the time of low water current began to set south was about 2 h 0 m in both sections. 3. In comparison of the occupied times to vary the set from one of 8 principal bearing points to the neighboring one, the shortest was while the set varied from N to NE and S to SW in the section 250 and 494 respectively. Contrary the longest was while the set varied from SE to S and from W to NW in the section 250 and 494 respectively. 4. In comparison of the rate while the set varied from one of 8 principal bearing points to the neighboring one, the fastest was while the set varied from SE to Sand NW to N in the section 250, and E to SE and W to NW in the section 494. Contrary the slowest was while the current set to NE and S W in the section 250, and N, NE and S W in the section 494.
