  • Suppression of the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of NbN thin films in superconductor/ferromagnet multilayers has been investigated. Both superconducting NbN and ferromagnetic FeN layers were deposited on thermally oxidized Si substrate at room temperature by using reactive magnetron sputtering in an $Ar-N_2$ gas mixture. The thickness of FeN films was fixed at 20 nm, while the thickness of NbN films was varied from 3 nm to 90 nm. $T_c$ suppression was clearly observed in NbN layers up to 70 nm thickness when NbN layer was in proximity with FeN layer. For a given thickness of NbN layer, the magnitude of $T_c$ suppression was increased in the order of Si/FeN/NbN, Si/NbN/FeN, and Si/FeN/NbN/FeN structure. This result can be used to design a spin switch whose operation is based on the proximity effect between superconducting and ferromagnetic layers.

  • The electrical properties of heavily drawn bundled Cu- Nb filamentary microcomposite wires were examined and correlated with the microstructural changes caused by thermomechanical treatments. The cross sectional shape of Nb filaments in wires fabricated by bundling and drawing appear straight or slightly curved. The different shape of Nb filaments is attributed to the break- up and cylinderization of Nb filaments during the bundling process at high temperatures. The resistivity of Cu-Nb microcomposites is predominantly controlled by electron scattering at Cu-Nb interfaces. The decrease of the conductivity below the annealing temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ is due to the increasing contribution of the scattering associated with coherency strains of needle- shaped precipitates. The slight decrease of the resistivity ratio (${\rho}_{295K}/{\rho}_{75K}$) is also due to the precipitation of Nb atoms. The increase in conductivity in Cu-Nb microcomposites at an annealing temperature of 50$0^{\circ}C$ is due to the coarsening and spheroidization of Nb filaments.

  • In order to study the interfacial reaction between Nb thin sheet and Fe-C-(Si) alloy with different Chemical compositions, they were cast-bonded. The growth of carbide layer formed at the interface after isothermal heat treatment at 1173K, 1223K, 1273K and 1323K for various times was investigated. The carbide formed at the interface was NbC and the thickness of NbC layer was increased linearly in proportional to the heat treating time. Therefore, It was found that the growth of NbC layer was controlled by the interfacial reaction. The growth rate constant of NbC layer was slightly increased with increase of carbon content when the silicon content is similar in the cast irons. However, as silicon content increases with no great difference in carbon content, the growth of NbC layer was greatly retarded. The calculated activation energy for the growth of NbC layer was varied in the range of 447.4~549.3 kJ/moI with the compositions of cast irons.

  • Thin $700^{\circ}C$films were formed through layer inversion of Co/Nb bilayer during rapid thermal annealing(RTA). The Nb interlayer seems to effectively prevent over-consumption of Si and to control the silicidation reaction by forming Co-Nb intermetallic compounds and removing the native oxide formed on Si substrate which interferes the uniform Co-Si interaction. The final layer structure of the Co/Nb bilayer after $700^{\circ}C$ RTA was found to be ${Nb}_{2}{O}_{3}$/${Co}_{2}$Si.CoSi/${NbCo}_{x}$/Nb(O, C)/${CoSi}_{2}$/ Si. The layer inversion and the formation of a stable CoSi, phase occurred above $700^{\circ}C$, and the Nb silicides were not found at any annealing temperature. These may be due to the formation of very stable Co-Nb intermetallic compounds and Nb oxides which limit the moving of Co and Si.

  • Various amount of NbC carbide was intentionally formed in a matrix-type cold-work tool steel by controlled amount of Nb and C addition. And the effect of NbC addition on the mechanical properties was investigated. Four alloys with different Nb and C contents were cast by vacuum induction melting, then hot forging and spheroidizing annealing were conducted. The machinability of the annealed specimens was examined with 3 different cutting tools. And tensile tests at room temperature were conducted. After quenching and tempering, hardness and impact toughness were measured, while wear resistance was evaluated by disk-on-plate type wear test. The increasing amount of NbC addition resulted in degraded machinability with increased strength, whereas the absence of NbC also led to poor machinability due to high toughness. After quenching and tempering, the additional NbC improved wear resistance with increasing hardness, whereas it deteriorated impact toughness. Therefore, it could be found that a moderate addition of NbC was desirable for the balanced combination of mechanical properties.

  • Multistage deformation behavior of Nb-microalloyed steel and carbon steel was studied by torsion test with declining temperature T, constant pass strain $\varepsilon_i$, interrupt time $(t_i)$, and varying strain rate $(\.{\varepsilon})$. In the range of $1000^{\circ}C~790^{\circ}C$ and 4.00/sec~0.38/sec, the flow stress at each pass was correlated to the deformation variables. As the finished deformation temperatures are decreased to the range of $790^{\circ}C~900^{\circ}C$, Nb precipitates play an important role on the grain refinement of Nb-microalloyed steel. the flow stress of Nb-microalloyed steel was higher than the carbon steel's while the grain size of Nb-microalloyed steel was smaller than carbon steel below the temperature of $900^{\circ}C$.

  • The morphology and structure of precipitates of formed in Nb steels were investigated using SEM, TEM and XRD. The quantitative analysis of the precipitates was performed by ICP-AES. The potentiostatic etching method was employed as an extraction method using 10% AA-methanol and 15% Na-citrate electrolytes. The two selected potentials relative to SCE(Standard Calomel Electrode), -100mV in 10% AA-methanol solution and -250mV in 15% Na-citrate solution were found to be effective for the extraction. XRD analysis showed that composition of Nb carbonitride in Nb-steel(0.01% C-0.7% Nb-0.004N) was $NbC_{0.65}N_{0.2}$.

  • We developed a pulsed laser deposition(PLD) apparatus for depositing various thin films. In this study, the formation of $NbS_2$ thin film was performed in the vacuum chamber by PLD method. $Al_2O_3$(012) and Si(111) were used as the substrates. In order to investigate the growth conditions of a high crystalline $NbS_2$ thin film, the S/Nb composition ratio was varied from 2.0 to 5.25 and the substrate temperature was varied from the room temperature to $600^{\circ}C$. From the result of X-ray diffraction studies of the prepared $NbS_2$ thin films, it was reported that the $NbS_2$, thin film showed a good crystallinity at substrate temperature $600^{\circ}C$ and with S/Nb composition ratio 4.0 on $Al_2O_3$(012) but did not on Si(111). The films exhibited c-axis orientation.

  • The mutifilamentary $Nb_3$Sn wire containing 135 Nb filaments was manufactured by the internal tin method. The critical current density ($J_C$) in magnetic fields for the wires heat-treated at $660^{/circ}C$ and $700^{/circ}C$ were investigated. The Non-Cu $J_C$ and n-value of 0.82 mm$\phi$ $Nb_3$Sn wire heat-treated at $700^{/circ}C$ for 240 hours was approximately 450 A/$mm^2$ at 12T, 4.2K and 14, respectively. Also the $B_{C2}$ of $Nb_3$Sn wire extrapolated by Kramer plot was 27.2T. The wire heat-treated at $700^{/circ}C$ for 240 hours showed smaller residual tin concentration in the matrix and the larger area of $Nb_3$Sn layer as comparison with the wire heat-treated at $660^{/circ}C$.

  • Multilayer NbCxC1-x/Y2O3/Ti were sputter-coated on the alumina substrate, starting with a 0.7 ㎛ thick NbCxC1-x layer grown on substrate, followed by 0.7 ㎛ thick Y2O3 layer and 1 ㎛ thick Ti layer. To find out the optimum conditions for thickness uniformity and adhesion, sputtering works have been done with the variation of sputtering power and Ar pressure. After vacuum annealing at 950℃ and 1000℃, the thermal stability of the NbCxC1-x/Y2O3/Ti coated alumina substrates has been investigated by peel off test. The coating scheme didn't cause any debonded layer after an annealing at 950℃ for 3hrs. However, it was peeled off after annealing at 1000℃ for 3hr. It was found that the thermal stability of Al2O3/NbCxC1-x/Y2O3/Ti coating scheme changed with the NbCxC1-x composition.
