  • Hardness value decreased about 3% for annealed specimens and increased about 60% for one hour aged specimens. But the values of the other specimens aged two hours or more showed almost the same. The yield strength was the highest about 1,800㎫ in 0.06%Nb specimen having twice as much as the base meta1 specimen. Also, the elongation was the highest in 0.03%Nb specimen showing the same as base metal specimen. The higher aging temperature and the longer aging time, the higher fatigue life. On the other hand, the 0.03%Nb specimen showed the highest fatigue life which increased about 12% more than base metal specime. 0.06%Nb specimen aged at 482$^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours simultaneously satisfied the 250 grade strength and 200 grade elongation having the most superior mechanical properties.

  • The MRI Magnet is a most practical application of NbTi superconductor. In this paper, we present the main research results on superconducting wires for MRI magnet which we have developed. Cu/NbTi superconducting wires were fabricated by repeat of cold working and heat-treating process after that billets were extruded. We investigated the relation of superconductivities of wires and heat treatment condition. The correlation between cross section shape of wires and work inhomogeneity of NbTi rods was investigated by microscopic observation. The more repeatation number of cold working and heat-treating process, the higher critical current is achieved.

  • Biomimetic apatite deposition behaviors on Zr-1Nb and Ti-6Al-4V plate with various surface conditions were examined. Both alloys were polished with abrasive papers to have different roughness and some of them were treated in NaOH before exposition in simulated body fluid. NaOH treatment was found to enhance the deposition rate of apatite on Ti-6Al-4V significantly. On the other hand, the deposition rate of Zr-1Nb was not influenced by NaOH treatment. Without NaOH treatment, the polished Zr-1Nb with abrasive paper was found to induce more apatite nucleation than the polished Zr-6Al-4V.

  • In the present work, we investigate the anodization of Nb in a $K_2HPO_4$ containing glycerol electrolyte at elevated temperatures ($180^{\circ}C$). Under optimized conditions, uniformly over the entire anodized surface, self-organized porous $Nb_2O_5$ structures can be formed. The growth rate of highly ordered $Nb_2O_5$ is $1.7{\mu}m/min$ at beginning stage of anodization and the overall current efficiency is 70 %.

  • The present work was performed to investigate the effect of coiling temperature on the annealed texture in Cu/Nb-added ultra-low-carbon steels. The ultra-low-carbon steels were coiled at 650 and $720^{\circ}C$, respectively. The result showed that the Cu-added ultra-low-carbon steel at a low coiling temperature produced a desirable annealed texture related to good formability. On the other hand, Nb-added ultra-low-carbon steel at a high coiling temperature also produced a desirable texture. This is attributed to the effect of Nb, which retards recrystallization during the coiling process.

  • CD11c and costimulatory molecules such as CD80 and CD86 express mainly in dendritic cells (DCs). In this study, we investigated the biologic effects of recombinant Fms-like tyrosine kinase-3 (Flt-3) ligand on the expression of DC surface markers, including CD11c in leukemia cell lines, such as KG-1, HL-60, NB4, and THP-1 cells. The expression of the Flt-3 receptor was found in NB4 and HL-60 cells, as well as KG-1 cells, but not in THP-1 cells. When KG-1 cells were cultured in a medium containing Flt-3 ligand or granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) plus tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-$\alpha$, cell proliferation was inhibited and the expression levels of CD11c, major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-I, and MHC-II were increased in the cells. Flt-3 ligand also increased the expression level of CD11c on HL-60 and NB4 cells, but not on THP-1 cells. In comparison with CD11c expression, the expression level of CD11b on KG-1 cells, but not on NB4 and HL-60 cells, was slightly increased by Flt-3 ligand. Flt-3 ligand induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1/2 (ERK-1/2) and p38-mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38-MAPK) in KG-1 cells, and the up-regulation of CD11c expression by Flt-3 ligand in the cells was abrogated by PD98059, an inhibitor of MEK. The results suggest that Flt-3 ligand up-regulates DC surface markers on $CD34^+$ myelomonocytic KG-1 cells, as well as promyelocytic leukemia cells, and that the differentiation of the leukemia cells into DC-like cells by Flt-3 ligand is mediated by ERK-1/2 activity.

  • A simple and convenient method for the addition of TMSCN to carbonyl compounds is described. NbCl5 is found to possess a strong Lewis acid property to transform carbonyl compounds smoothly to the corresponding cyanosilylether in high yields (up to 99 %) in solvent- free conditions.

  • Annealing effects on the permeability aftereffect(disaccommodation) of liquid quenched single strip $Fe_{73.5}Cu_1Nb_3Si_{16}B_{6.5}$ alloys were investigated with pulse method. The initial susceptibility X, $B_{10},$ (the flux density at 10 Oe) and disaccommodation intensity D (D = [X(1 s)-X(64 s)]/X(1 s), where X(1 s) and X(64 s) are the susceptibility of 1 and 64 s of rest time after A. C. demagnetization) were about 800, 0.8 T and 16 %, respectively. The soft magnetic properties were improved with isothermal annealing for 1 hour at $300{\sim}600^{\circ}C.$ X, $B_{10},$ and D at $570^{\circ}C$ of optimum annealing temperature were 15000, 1.2 T and 1.1 %, respectively. The origin of the change of characteristics were examined with fine crystalline structure and magnetostriction.

  • The ferritic 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb heat-resisting steel was experimentally studied in order to characterize its microstructural evolution during creep-fatigue by coercivity measurement. The creep-fatigue test was conducted at $550\;^{\circ}C$ with the tensile holding time of 60s and 600s, respectively. The coercivity decreased until the failure and the hardness monotonously decreased for the whole fatigue life. As the life fraction of creep-fatigue increased, the $M_{23}C_6$ carbide coarsened following the Ostwald ripening mechanism. However, the MX carbonitrides did not grow during creep-fatigue due to so stable at $550\;^{\circ}C$. The width of martensite lath increased because of the dislocation recovery at the lath boundaries. The magnetic coercivity has an influence on the microstructural properties such as dislocation, precipitates and martensite lath boundaries, which interpreted in relation to microstructural changes. Consequently, this study proposes a magnetic coercivity to quantify the level of damage and microstructural change during the creep-fatigue of ferritic 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb steel.
