This study investigates the applicability of CADMAS-SURF (Super Roller Flume for Computer Aided Design of a MArtime Structure) code basal on the Navier-Stokes solver to predict bore phenomena. The time variation of ware levels and velocities due to the bore propagation were computed for the different bore strength conditions. In order to verify the numerical results by CADMAS-SURF, laboratory experiments were also performed, using the DPIV and LDV measuring system. The numerical results were compared to the experimental data and the analytical predictions by the NSC method basal on fully nonlinear shallow-water theory by the method of characteristics. It appears that the CADMAS-SURF slightly overestimated the water-surface level measured by the laboratory experiments and its discrepancy becomes prominent as the bore strength increases. The predicted propagation speed for a bore was also slaver than that by the experiment and NSC method. However, the temporal variations in velocities were in relatively good agreement with the experimental data for all cases, except for overshooting and undershooting in the front face of a bore, which may be derived from the numerical instability. Further, CADMAS-SURF successfully simulated the decrease in the water level and velocity caused by the effects of negative waves reflected from the upstream end wall.
During the loading/offloading operation of a liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) that is moored in a side-by-side configuration with an offshore plant, sloshing that occurs due to the partially filled LNG tank and the interactive effect between the two floating bodies are important factors that affect safety and operability. Therefore, a time-domain software program, called CHARM3D, was developed to consider the interactions between sloshing and the motion of a floating body, as well as the interactions between multiple bodies using the potential-viscous hybrid method. For the simulation of a floating body in the time domain, hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces were calculated in the frequency domain using the 3D radiation/diffraction panel program based on potential theory. The calculated values were used for the simulation of a floating body in the time domain by convolution integrals. The liquid sloshing in the inner tanks is solved by the 3D-FDM Navier-Stokes solver that includes the consideration of free-surface non-linearity through the SURF scheme. The computed sloshing forces and moments were fed into the time integration of the ship's motion, and the updated motion was, in turn, used as the excitation force for liquid sloshing, which is repeated for the ensuing time steps. For comparison, a sloshing motion coupled analysis program based on linear potential theory in the frequency domain was developed. The computer programs that were developed were applied to the side-by-side offloading operation between the offshore plant and the LNGC. The frequency-domain results reproduced the coupling effects qualitatively, but, in general, the peaks were over-predicted compared to experimental and time-domain results. The interactive effects between the sloshing liquid and the motion of the vessel can be intensified further in the case of multiple floating bodies.
The Numerical study has been carried out to investigate the effects of chemical reaction and thermal radiation on the rocket plume flow-field at various altitudes. The theoretical formulation is based on the Navier-Stokes equations for compressible flows along with the infinitely fast chemistry and thermal radiation. The governing equations were solved by a finite volume fully-implicit TVD(Total Variation Diminishing) code which uses Roe's approximate Riemann solver and MUSCL(Monotone Upstream-centered Schemes for Conservation Laws) scheme. LU-SGS (Lower Upper Symmetric Gauss Seidel) method is used for the implicit solution strategy. An equilibrium chemistry module for hydrocarbon mixture with detailed thermo-chemical properties and a thermal radiation module for optically thin media were incorporated with the fluid dynamics code. In this study, kerosene-fueled rocket was assumed operating at O/F ratio of 2.34 with a nozzle expansion ratio of 6.14. Flight conditions considered were Mach number zero at ground level, Mach number 1.16 at altitude 5.06km and Mach number 2.9 at altitude 17.34km. Numerical results gave the understandings on the detailed plume structures at different altitude conditions. The diffusive effect of the thermal radiation on temperature field and the effect of chemical recombination during the expansion process could be also understood. By comparing the results from frozen flow and infinitely fast chemistry assumptions, the excess temperature of the exhaust gas resulting from the chemical recombination seems to be significant and cannot be neglected in the view point of performance, thermal protection and flow physics.

Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed using SIMPLER method to study the unsteady viscous flow physics over two-dimensional ellipses. Unsteady viscous flows over various thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 200, 400, and 1,000. This study is focused on the understanding the effects of Reynolds number and elliptic cylinder thickness on the drag and lift forces. The present numerical solutions are compared with available experimental and numerical results and show a good agreement. Through this study, it is observed that the Reynolds number and the cylinder thickness affect not only the frequency of the force oscillations but also the mean values and the amplitudes of the total drag and lift forces significantly.

This paper deals with the performance analysis and design of the Darrieus-type vertical axis turbine to evaluate the effect of key design parameters such as number of blade, blade chord, pitch and camber. The commercial CFD software FLUENT was employed as an unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver with k-e turbulent model. Grid system was modelled by GAMBIT. Basic numerical methodology of the present study is appeared in Jung et al. (2009). Two-dimensional analysis was mostly adopted to avoid the barrier of massive calculation required for parametric study. It was found that the highly efficient turbine model could be designed through the optimization of design parametrrs.

In order to resolve the trimming difficulty in rotor CFD calculations, a high-efficiency and improved "delta trim method" is established to compute the blade control settings that are necessary to identify the blade motion. In this method, a simplified model which combines the blade element theory and different inflow models is employed to calculate the control settings according to the target aerodynamic forces, then it is coupled into a CFD solver with unsteady Navier-Stokes equations by the delta methodology, which makes the control settings and aerodynamics calculated and updated in the meantime at every trim cycle. Different from the previous work, the current research combines the inflow model based on prescribed wake theory. Using the method established, the control settings and aerodynamic characteristics of Helishape 7A, AH-1G and Caradonna-Tung rotors are calculated. The influence of different inflow models on trimming calculations is analyzed and the computational efficiency of the current "delta trim method" is compared with that of the "CFD-based trim method". Furthermore, for the sake of improving the calculation efficiency, a novel acceleration factor method is introduced to accelerate the trimming process. From the numerical cases, it is demonstrated that the current "delta trim method" has higher computational efficiency than "CFD-based trim method" in both hover and forward flight, and up to 70% of the amount of calculation can be saved by current "delta trim method" which turns out to be satisfactory for engineering applications. In addition, the proposed acceleration factor shows a good ability to accelerate the trim procedure, and the prescribed wake inflow model is always of better stability than other simple inflow models whether the acceleration factor is utilized in trimming calculations.

Viscous solutions of supersonic side jet nozzle and supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. For rapid and abrupt control of a missile in supersonic flight, side jet on a missile body is found to be a useful devise as evidenced by recent missile development at several nations. The magnitude of the side jet and the duration of it decide the level of control of such a missile system. The aerodynamic characteristics of the side jet devise itself are examined in terms of key parameters such as the side jet nozzle geometry, the chamber pressure and temperature. On the other hand, the jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the plate/nozzle distance increases, and the frequency of the wall pressure is estimated on the order of 10.0 KHz. Objectives of this paper are to show accurate simulation of nozzle flow itself and to demonstrate the jet flow structure when the jet interacts with a wall at a close range.

This In this paper, we describe the performance characteristics of a turbo blower as a function of the shape of the volute casing: expansion diameter and width of the volute casing. The turbo blower considered in the present study is mainly used in a refuse collection system. The flow characteristics inside the turbo blower were analyzed by a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver and compared with experimental results. The distributions of pressure and efficiency obtained by numerical simulation were in good agreement with those determined experimentally. Throughout the numerical simulation of the turbo blower, the blower performance was enhanced by decreasing the local losses in the blade passage and the outlet flow. The efficiency and pressure for the design flow condition were enhanced by about 3% and 2%, respectively, compared to the efficiency and pressure of the reference blower. Detailed flow analysis was performed using the results of the numerical simulation

In this study, the mixing characteristics in lid-driven cavity flows were studied numerically by using a hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM). First, we compared the numerical results from single-relaxation-time (LB-SRT) and multi-relaxation-time (LB-MRT) models to examine their reliability. In most of the cavity flow, the results from both the LB-SRT and the LB-MRT models were in good agreement with those using a Navier-Stokes solver for Re=100-5000. However, the LB-MRT model was superior to the LB-SRT model for the simulation of higher Reynolds number flows having a geometrical singularity with much lesser spatial oscillations. For this reason, the LB-MRT model was selected to study the mass transport in lid-driven cavity flows, and it was demonstrated that mass transport in the fluid was activated by a recirculation zone in the cavity, which is connected from the top to the bottom surfaces through two boundary layers. Various mixing characteristics such as the concentration profiles, mean Sherwood (Sh) numbers, and velocity were computed. Finally, the detailed transport mechanism and solutions for the concentration profile in the cavity were presented.

In this paper, a 1MW HAWT(FIL-1000) rotor blade has been designed by BEMT(Blade Element Momentum Theory) with Prandtl's tip loss. Also, a 3-D flow and performance analysis on the FIL-1000 rotor blade has been carried out by using the 3-D Navier-Stokes commercial solver (CFX-5.7) to provide more efficient design techniques to the large-scale HAWT engineers. The rated power and itsapproaching wind velocity at design point (TSR=7.5) are 1MW and 9.99m/s respectively. The rotor diameter is 54.5m and the rotating speed is 26.28rpm. Airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W-250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418, NACA 63415 consist of the rotor blade from hub to tip. Recent CFX version, 5.7 was adopted to simulate 3-D flow field and to analyze the performance characteristics of the rotor blade. Entire mesh node number is about 730,000 and it is generated by ICEM-CFD to achieve better mesh quality The predicted maximum power occurringat the design tip speed ratio is 931.45kW. Approaching to the root, the inflow angle becomes large, which causesthe blade to be stalled in the region. Therefore, k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model was used to predict the quantitative flow information more accurately. Application of commercial CFD code to optimum blade design and performance analysis was proved to be more effective environment to HAWT blade designers.
