The measurement of air-borne noise in a naval ship is a crucial element. Because the noise in a naval ship interferes with a communication between crews and finally it causes to reduce the combat power. Thus, most of newly built ships have to satisfy the criteria of air-borne noise in the stage of delivery of a naval ship. In order to evaluate success or failure of criteria, uncertainty of the measurement should be considered. This study introduces the test method for the measurement of the air-borne noise in a naval ship and is concerned with the evaluation of uncertainty. The uncertainty results which was from the measurement of air-borne noise in 7 naval ships newly built satisfy the error tolerance(2dB). Therefore, it is need to reduce the error tolerance for the reliable measurement result.

Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is the service that provides ships navigating on a sea transportation route with guidance and advice about geographical environment and other attentive information for their safety. In this study we point out that currently, constructing additional VTSs is required to prevent ships from unexpected accident on their navigation. We first select several candidate locations for constructing VTSs, based on the amount of marine transportation and its potential development possibility. Then, we present an optimization model in which the maximum area coverage is achieved by determining new locations of VTS subject to budget limitation. The problem can be modeled as a binary integer program and it provides an optimal solution for new VTS locations to be constructed under the consideration of the currently located VTSs in Korea.
Prediction of the stability for ships is very complex in reality. In this paper, risk based approach is applied to predict the probability of capsize for a certified ship, which is effected by the forces of sea especially the wave loading Safety assessment and risk analysis process are also applied for the probabilistic prediction of stability for ships. The probability of shipsencountering different waves at sea is calculated by the existed statistics data and risk based models. Finally, ship capsizing probability is calculated according to single degree of freedom(SDF) rolling differential equation and basin erosion theory of nonlinear dynamics. Calculation results show that the survival probabilities of ship excited by the forces of the seas, especially in the beam seas status, can be predicted by the risk based method.

The painting process of large ships is an intense manual operation that typically comprises 9-12% of the total shipbuilding cost. Accordingly, shipbuilders need to estimate the required amount of anti-corrosive coatings and painting resources for inventory and cost control. This study aims to develop a software system which enables the shipbuilders to estimate paint area using existing 3D CAD ship structural models. The geometric information of the ships structure are extracted from the existing shipbuilding CAD/CAM system and used to create painting zones. After specifying the painting zones, users can generate the paint faces by clipping structural parts inside each zone. Finally, the paint resources may be obtained from the product of the paint areas and required paint thickness. Implementing the developed software system to real shipbuilders' operations has contributed to improved productivity, faster resource estimation, better accuracy, and fewer coating defects over their conventional manual calculation methods for painting resource estimation.

The high-tech large warships are minimal and they are always monitored by opponents, and become primary targets when conflicts occur. The improvement in reducing susceptibility has significant importance because it is difficult for a ship to maintain mission capability and functionality once it is damaged. Ordinary decoys are effective only under the premise that the ship has already been exposed. Traditionally, for naval vessels, techniques related to the radar have been used in military stealth techniques to ensure confidentiality. The corner reflector, on the other hand, can produce rather large radar cross sections. Continued use of deceptive systems such as chaff during operations will help to improve survivability of naval ships. From this viewpoint, corner reflector was considered for making radar countermeasures and deception technology. This paper reviews the current status of corner reflector basis decoys and the technical feasibility of corner reflectors for developing structural decoys.

Many researchers have been trying to improve the propulsion efficiency of a propeller. In this study, the numerical analysis is carried out for the POW(Propeller Open Water test) performance of a propeller equipped with an energy saving device called PHVC(Propeller Hub Vortex Control). PHVC is aimed to control the propeller hub vortex behind the propeller so that the rotational kinetic energy loss can be reduced. The unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS) equations are assumed as the governing flow equations and are solved by using a commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) software, where SST k-ω model is selected for turbulence closure. The computed characteristic values, thrust, torque and propulsion efficiency coefficients for the target propeller with and without PHVC and the local flows in the propeller wake region are validated by the model test results of KRISO LCT(Large Cavitation Tunnel). It is concluded from the present numerical results that CFD can be a good promising method in the assessment of the hydrodynamic performance of PHVC in the design stage.

The logistics of entire shipbuilding process are integrated during the block erection process and the schedules for the erection process are made prior to. the schedules of any other processes. Therefore, efficient scheduling of the block erection process are one of most important issues in shipbuilding. There are only a few studies published regarding block erection scheduling methods because of its complexity and variability. This paper proposes an algorithm for diminution of maximum load based on constraint satisfaction technique. it is developed primarily for the efficiency in load leveling and applicability to the actual block erection process. The proposed algorithm is applied to actual block erection process and the results shows improvements in load leveling. It can also be used for the scheduling of fabrication, sub-assembly, and assembly to improve load leveling.

This paper uses optimization techniques to obtain bow hull form of a 66,000 DWT bulk carrier in calm water and in waves. Parametric modification functions of SAC and section shape of DLWL are used for hull form variation. Multi-objective functions are applied to minimize the wave-making resistance in calm water and added resistance in regular head wave of ${\lambda}/L=0.5$. WAVIS version 1.3 is used to obtain wave-making resistance. The modified Fujii and Takahashi's formula is applied to obtain the added resistance in short wave. The PSO algorithm is employed for the optimization technique. The resistance and motion characteristics in calm water and regular and irregular head waves of the three hull forms are compared. It has been shown that the optimal brings 13.2% reduction in the wave-making resistance and 13.8% reduction in the added resistance at ${\lambda}/L=0.5$; and the mean added resistance reduces by 9.5% at sea state 5.

This paper employs computational tools to investigate the cause of resistance reductions in calm water and waves of the sharp bow form compared to the blunt bow in 66,000 DWT bulk carriers. A more slender shape at the fore-shoulder without a bulbous bow is a prominent feature of the sharp bow. The blunt bow incorporates a bulbous shape. A two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free-surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. The computational results have been validated with model tests carried out at a towing tank. The pressure component of resistance in the sharp bow is reduced by 8.9% in calm water, and 6.4-12.7% in regular head waves. The frictional components of resistance in the sharp and blunt bows are largely the same.

The present study numerically investigates the effect of the wavy leading edge on hydrodynamic characteristics for the flow of rectangular wings with the low aspect ratio of 1.5. Five different wave lengths at fixed wavy amplitude have been considered. Numerical simulations are performed at a wide range of the angle of attack ($0^{\circ}{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}40^{\circ}$) at one Reynolds number of $10^6$. The wavy wings considered in this study did not experience enough lift drop to be defined as the stall, comparing with the smooth wing. However, in the pre-stall region, the wavy wings reveal the considerable loss of the lift, compared to the smooth wing. In the post-stall, the lift coefficients of the smooth wing and the wavy wings are not much different. The pressure coefficient, limiting streamlines and the iso-surface of the spanwise vorticity are also highlighted to examine the effect of the wave length on the flow structures.
