Dynamic simulation is critical for electrical ship studies as it obtains the necessary information to capture and characterize system performance over the range of system operations and dynamic events such as disturbances or contingencies. However, modeling and simulation of the interactive electrical and mechanical dynamics involves setting up and solving system equations in time-domain that is typically time consuming and computationally expensive. Accurate assessment of system dynamic behaviors of interest without excessive computational overhead has become a serious concern and challenge for practical application of electrical ship design, analysis, optimization and control. This paper aims to develop a systematic approach to classify the sophisticated dynamic phenomenon encountered in electrical ship modeling and simulation practices based on the design intention and the time scale of interest. Then a novel, comprehensive, coherent, and end-to-end mathematical modeling and simulation approach has been developed for the latest Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) Shipboard Power System (SPS) with the objective to effectively and efficiently capture the system behavior for ship-wide system-level studies. The accuracy and computation efficiency of the proposed approach has been evaluated and validated within the time frame of interest in the cast studies. The significance and the potential application of the proposed modeling and simulation approach are also discussed.
To improve the naval ship acquisition process, systems engineering, modeling and simulation, etc. have been introduced, and there has been ongoing research on acquisition systems for effective support of it. However, due to characteristics of the naval ship acquisition process, development process mainly carried out at a shipyard such as basic design, detailed design, construction and test is difficult to integrate with the acquisition systems of IPT(Integrated Project Team). In addition, research aimed to improve this is rather lacking. In this paper, the naval ship product structure concept proposed in previous research was applied to the basic design system at shipyard, and basic research for expanding the coverage of naval ship acquisition systems to the basic design phase is performed. A data structure of modeling system appropriate to the basic design phase was proposed through research findings and the prototype system based on it was implemented.
The Korea Navy has been making constant efforts to apply M&S (modeling and simulation) to naval ship development, and the generalization of M&S for ship development is a trend. M&S for ship design is used for the V&V (verification and validation) of its design and operation, including design verification and ergonomic design that considers the crew using the Naval Ship Product Model. In addition, many parts of this M&S are repeatedly accomplished regardless of the kinds of ships. This study aims to standardize M&S, which repeatedly applies similar verifications for operation scenarios. A congestion assessment simulation for the major spaces of ships was the subject of the standardization based on the leading research results of various researchers, and a simulation automation solution was suggested. An information model using XML was proposed through the simulation automation concept, and a prototype system based on it was implemented. The usability was shown through a case study that verified the operability performance of the crew messroom.
As naval ships become more complex with the reduced cost and time for their development, modeling and simulation are increasingly used. The US navy has being applied the concept of a simulation-based acquisition(SBA) to their acquisition process. However, there have been few studies on a simulation-based acquisition for naval ships (SBA-NS) in the Korean naval shipbuilding. In this paper, we discuss a framework to establish collaborative environment(CE) for an advanced naval ships acquisition based on PLM. For this, we propose architectures and a naval ship information model for design the framework of the SBA-NS. To design the framework, we develop the methodology that is composed of three major processes that are the requirement analysis process, the SBA-NS architectures design process and the design process of a reference model of a naval ship product information. Applying the methodology, the framework suitable for the Korean Navy context is developed.
Collision analysis problems between ship to ship can be generally classified into the external mechanics(outer dynamics) and internal mechanics(inner dynamics). The former can be also dealt with the concept of fluid-structure interaction and the use of rigid body dynamic program, depending on the ways handling the hydrodynamic pressure due to surrounding water. In this study, full scale ship collision simulation was carried out, such as a DWT 75,000 ton striking ship collided at right angle to the middle of a DWT 150,000 struck ship with 10 knots velocity, coupling MCOL, a rigid body mechanics program for modeling the dynamics of ships, to hydrocode LS-DYNA. It could be confirmed that more suitable damage estimation would be performed in the case of the collision simulations with consideration of surrounding water through the comparison with the collision simulation results of fixed struck ships without it. Through this study, the opportunity could be obtained to establish a more effective ship collision simulation technique between ship to ship.
Mines, torpedoes and improvised explosive devices (IED) pose a serious threat to the survivability of naval combatants. Inasmuch, a major goal in the design of modern combatant ships has been to eliminate or at least reduce the devastating damage caused by underwater explosion events. Even though there has been extensive research performed on the various underwater explosion phenomena and their associated effects, effective shock testing and shock proofing strategies for naval ship systems have proven to be illusive. Through the use of modeling and simulation (M&S), live fire test and evaluation (LFT&E) and laboratory testing, general guidelines for the shock hardening of shipboard equipment and systems have been developed. In this paper, current aspect of ship survivability has been addressed and future direction is discussed.
The safety assessment of the structure related to people has become the most important part in the process of the design. Especially, in the case of a ship, as regulations about the safety of passengers and the pollution in the ocean are strictly reinforcing, the safety assessment has become the most important part in the process of the design. In this paper, we suggested network-based simulation system framework using HLA (High Level Architecture) among many kind of simulations to assess the safety of the ship. In addition, the visualization method which is composed of graphic user interface for ship modeling and the visualization of ship motion is presented.

This paper presents 2D numerical modeling to calculate ship-ice interactions that occur when an icebreaker advances into ice-covered water. The numerical model calculates repeated icebreaking of an ice plate and removal of small ice floes. The icebreaking of the ice plate is calculated using a ship-ice contact detection technique and fluid-structural interaction of ice plate bending behavior. The ship-ice interactions in small ice floes are calculated using a physically based modeling with 3DOF rigid body equations. The ice plate is broken in crushing, bending, and splitting mode. The ice floes drift by wind or current and by the force induced by the ship-ice interaction. The time history of ice force and ice floe distribution when an icebreaker advances into the ice-covered water are obtained numerically. Numerical results demonstrate that the time history of ice force and distribution of ice floes (ice channel width) depend on the ice floe size, ship motion and ice drifting by wind or current. It is shown that the numerical model of ship maneuvering in realistic ice conditions is necessary to obtain precise information about the ship in ice-covered water. The proposed numerical model can be useful to provide data of a ship operating in ice-covered water.
The shipbuilding process is changing due to changes in the development environment and technological requirements for military ships. This would also hold true for a submarine, because its shipbuilding process includes complicated design and construction conditions. System improvement efforts for the design and construction of military ships have continued with the goal of overcoming these conditions. At present, the Korea Navy is developing a 3,000 ton-class Korean type submarine, and its design is progressing by the introduction of a full 3D-ship CAD system. Although the 3D modeling system was introduced for effective design realization through the introduction of collaborative design and active utilization of M&S (modeling and simulation), the introduction effects are not yet generally obvious, according to the characteristics of ship design. The present paper discusses the collaborative environment for developing a submarine to enhance this. This paper proposes the architecture and data structure of a system for realizing collaborative design and discusses a case system developed on the basis of this.
