In order to evaluate the relationship between geochemical characteristics and benthic facies of the sediments from the Oenaro Island where red tide proliferation is first observed every year including this year, surface and short multiple core sediment samples were analyzed in terms of geochemical and benthic facies variation. The contents of organic carbon, carbonate, and sulfide gas were relatively low. The variation in C/N ratios, which indicate nature of organic carbon, suggested that the organic carbon recorded in the study area is composed of mixtures of marine and terrigenous organic matters. The concentration of minor elements found at the surface and multiple core sediment samples were also low as well as the enrichment factors(Ef) for the seven heavy metals indicated that the sediment of this area is not polluted significantly. The macrobenthic faunal community comprised 61 species, and their mean density was 708 ind./m2. Polychaete worms were major taxa of this benthic community. A crustacean amphipod, Melita sp. was the most abundant species accounted for 20.7% of total abundance, and the small polychaetes such as Heteromastus filiformis, Paralacydonia poradoxa, Magelona japonica and Sigambra tentaculata were the next dominant species. The macrobenthos around the Oenaro Island were more diverse and abundant than that in Gamak Bay. The benthic communities in the study area sustained somewhat different species composition based on the cluster analysis and the MDS ordination. The benthic community health condition at three stations seemed to be unbalanced, and slightly polluted based on the biological index such as BPI and BC. There was no clear relationship between the geochemistry characteristic and the benthic faunal facies attributed by the micro-algal blooms in this coastal area.

In this study, recovery of plasma etching damage in PZT thin film with additive gas and re-annealing after etching have been investigated. The PZT thin films were etched as a function of Cl$_2$/CF$_4$ with addition of Ar and $O_2$ with inductively induced plasma. The etch rates of PZT thin films were 1450$\AA$/min at 30% additive Ar into (Cl$_2$(80%)+CF$_4$ (20%)) and 1100$\AA$/min at 10% additive $O_2$ into C(Cl$_2$(80%)+CF$_4$ (20%)). In order to recovery properties of PZT thin films after etching, the etched PZT thin films were re-annealed at various temperatures in at $O_2$ atmosphere. From the hysteresis curves, ferroelectrical properties are improved by $O_2$ re-annealing process. The improvement of ferroelectric behavior at annealed sample is consistent with the increase of the (100) and (200) PZT peaks revealed by x-ray diffraction (XRD). From x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, intensity of Pb-O, Zr-O and Ti-O peak are increased and the chemical residue peak is reduced by $O_2$ re-annealing. The ferroelectric behavior consistent with the dielectric nature of Ti$_{x}$O$_{y}$ is recovered by $O_2$ recombination during rapid thermal annealing process.s.s.

Gas-phase hydrogen atoms create a variety of chemical and physical phenomena on Si surfaces: adsorption, abstraction of pre-adsorbed H, Si etching, Si amorphization, and penetration into the bulk lattice. Thermal desorption/evolution analyses exhibited three distinct peaks, including one from the crystalline bulk. It was previously found that thermal-energy gaseous H(g) atoms penetrate into the Si(100) crystalline bulk within a narrow substrate temperature window(centered at ~460K) and remain trapped in the bulk lattice before evolving out at a temperature as high as ~900K. Developing and sustaining atomic-scale surface roughness, by H-induced silicon etching, is a prerequisite for H absorption and determines the $T_s$ windows. Issues on the H(g) absorption to be further clarified are: (1) the role of the detailed atomic surface structure, together with other experimental conditions, (2) the particular physical lattice sites occupied by, and (3) the chemical nature of, absorbed H(g) atoms. This work has investigated and compared the thermal H(g) atom absorptivity of Si(100), Si(111) and Si(110) samples in detail by using the temperature programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD-MS). Due to the differences in the atomic structures of, and in the facility of creating atom-scale etch pits on, Si(100), (100) and (110) surfaces, the H-absorption efficiency was found to be larger in the order of Si(100) > Si(111) > Si(110) with a relative ratio of 1 : 0.22 : 0.045. This intriguing result was interpreted in terms of the atomic-scale surface roughening and kinetic competition among H(g) adsorption, H(a)-by-H(g) abstraction, $SiH_3(a)$-by-H(g) etching, and H(g) penetraion into the crystalline silicon bulk.
Dealuminated and alkali/alkaline-earth metal exchanged Y-type and ZSM-5 zeolites were prepared as catalytic materials. Comparing with the composition of starting material, the magnitude of Si/Al ratio was increased after dealumination and cation exchange process. The ratio of Si/Al on surface was appeared to be larger than that in bulk. The destruction of basic frame in catalysts observed was understood to be due to a detachment of aluminum, which results in reducing framework while increasing non-framework. This phenomenon becomes more serious with increasing time of steam treatment and even more significant for the cation exchanged catalysts. The desorption peaks of the NO-TPD profiles taken after dealumination and cation exchanged Y-type and ZSM-5 zeolites shifted to the low temperature region. It was also found that the longer the steam treatment time, the degree of shift toward low temperature region was increased. The catalytic activities are dependent on the nature of cation exchanged, the ratio of Si/Al and the ratio of framework/non-framework by a change in basic frame.
Ti has received considerable attention for aerospace, vehicle, and semiconductor industry applications because of its acid-resistant nature, low density, and high mechanical strength. A common precursor used for preparing Ti materials is $TiCl_4$. To prepare high-purity $TiCl_4$, a process based on the removal of $VOCl_3$ has been widely applied. However, $VOCl_3$ removal by distillation and condensation is difficult because of the similar physical properties of $TiCl_4$ and $VOCl_3$. To circumvent this problem, in this study, we have developed a process for $VOCl_3$ removal using Cu powder and mineral oil as purifying agents. The effects of reaction time and temperature, and ratio of purifying agents on the $VOCl_3$ removal efficiency are investigated by chemical and structural measurements. Clear $TiCl_4$ is obtained after the removal of $VOCl_3$. Notably, complete removal of $VOCl_3$ is achieved with 2.0 wt% of mineral oil. Moreover, the refined $TiCl_4$ is used as a precursor for the synthesis of Ti powder. Ti powder is fabricated by a thermal reduction process at $1,100^{\circ}C$ using an $H_2-Ar$ gas mixture. The average size of the Ti powder particles is in the range of $1-3{\mu}m$.
The features of the capture reaction of $CO_2$ by ammonia solution have been investigated along with the effect of temperature on the reaction based upon computer program-utilizing calculation and thermodynamic estimation. The stable region of $CO{_3}^{2-}$ was observed to increase with temperature and the change of the stable region of $CO{_3}^{2-}$ with temperature was greater than the temperature variation of the stable region of other carbonate species. The distribution diagram for $NH_4{^+}-NH_3$ system was constructed and the rise of temperature resulted in the decrease of the stability of $NH_4{^+}$ ion, which was thought to be due to the endothermic nature of its acidic dissociation. Considering the introduction of $Ca^{2+}$ ion in the carbon capture reaction by $NH_4{^+}$, the temperature was observed to be important in the determination of the order of reaction between carbonate ion and these cations. The removal process of $CO_2$ gas by ammonia solution was presumed to occur in open system and the temperature variations of the concentration of carbonate system species along with their total concentration were calculated for the proper control and design of the real process.
The radon gas from nature mainly considers a cause of radon problems, and it is closely affect human life cycle. Korean yellow residual soil, Hwangtoh, widely used as a building material, is considered to be one of major sources of indoor radon. However, there have, as yet, been no studies about radon from Hwangtoh in mass market brands. Here, we investigated the indoor radon concentrations and exhalation rates in four Hwangtohs from different brand names and regional features. The Closed Chamber Method (CCM) conducted by a Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) has been used for the rates of radon exhalation. Based on equations of previous references, the indoor radon concentrations were deducted. As a result, the radon surface exhalation rates resulted in the 1.4208 to 3.0293 Bq·㎡·h-1 range. Significant differences were found among Hwangtohs according to production regions. Materials with higher radon concentration required a longer time to reach a quasi-steady state in a given environment, in other words, the number of half-life cycles increased from a set starting point. The experimentally identified Hwangtohs demonstrated its safety for construction purposes. There exists, so far, a possibility to exert influence radon emanation due to unidentified factors. Therefore, it is necessary to corroborate with more research by increasing the number of Hwangtohs, considering the other references reported high radon exhalation rates. In addition, it is highly recommended that the radon exhalation rates should be measured for all building materials for preventing human health before the material usage.

The accelerated pace of climate crisis due to continuous industrialization and greenhouse gas emissions necessitates sustainable solutions that simultaneously address mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Naturebased Solutions (NbS) have gained prominence as viable approaches, with Green Infrastructure being a representative NbS. Green Infrastructure involves securing green spaces within urban areas, providing diverse climate adaptation functions such as removal of various air pollutants, carbon sequestration, and isolation. The proliferation of Green Infrastructure is influenced by the quantification of improvement effects related to various projects. To support decision-making by assessing the climate vulnerability of Green Infrastructure, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed i-Tree Tools. This study proposes a comprehensive evaluation approach for climate change adaptation types by quantifying the climate adaptation performance of urban Green Infrastructure. Using i-Tree Canopy, the analysis focuses on five urban green spaces covering more than 30 hectares, considering the tree ratio relative to the total area. The evaluation encompasses aspects of thermal environment, aquatic environment, and atmospheric environment to assess the overall eco-friendliness in terms of climate change adaptation. The results indicate that an increase in the tree ratio correlates with improved eco-friendliness in terms of thermal, aquatic, and atmospheric environments. In particular, it is necessary to prioritize consideration of the water environment sector in order to realize climate change adaptive green infrastructure, such as increasing green space in urban areas, as it has been confirmed that four out of five target sites are specialized in improving the water environment.

Korea, as the world's 7th largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has raised the national greenhouse gas reduction target as international regulations have been strengthened. As it is possible to utilize coastal and marine ecosystems as important nature-based solutions (NbS) for implementing climate change mitigation or adaptation plans, the blue carbon ecosystem is now receiving attention. Blue carbon refers to carbon that is deposited and stored for a long period after carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed as biomass by coastal ecosystems or oceanic ecosystems through photosynthesis. Currently, there are only three blue carbon ecosystems officially recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses. However, the results of new research on the high CO2 sequestration and storage capacity of various new blue carbon sinks, such as seaweeds, microalgae, coral reefs, and non-vegetated tidal flats, have been continuously reported to the academic community recently. The possibility of IPCC international accreditation is gradually increasing through scientific verification related to calculations. In this review, the current status and potential value of seaweeds, seagrass fields, and non-vegetated tidal flats, which are sources of blue carbon on the east coast, are discussed. This paper confirms that seaweed resources are the most effective NbS in the East Sea of Korea. In addition, we would like to suggest the direction of research and development (R&D) and utilization so that new blue carbon sinks can obtain international IPCC certification in the near future.

In 2004, total emissions of Greenhouse Gases(GHGs) in Korea was estimated to be about 590 million metric tons, which is the world's 10th largest emissions. Considering the much amount of nation's GHG emissions and growing nation's position in the world, GHG emissions in Korea should be reduced in near future. The CO$_2$ emissions from two sub-sections of energy sector in Korea, such as thermal power plant and industry section(including manufacturing and construction industries), was about 300 million metric tons in 2004 and this is 53.3% of total GHG emissions in Korea. So, the mitigation of CO$_2$ emissions in these two section is more important and more effective to reduce the nation's total GHGs than any other fields. In addition, these two section have high potential to qualitatively and effectively apply the CCS(Carbon Capture and Storage) technologies due to the nature of their process. There are several CCS technologies applied to these two section. In short term, the chemical absorption technology using amine as a absorbent could be the most effectively used. In middle or long term, pre-combustion technology equipped with ATR(Autothermal reforming), or MSR-$H_2$(Methane steam reformer with hydrogen separation membrane reactor) unit and oxyfuel combustion such as SOFC+GT(Solid oxide fuel cell-Gas turbine) process would be the promising technologies to reduce the CO$_2$ emissions in two areas. It is expected that these advanced CCS technologies can reduce the CO$_2$ avoidance cost to $US 8.5-43.5/tCO$_2$. Using the CCS technologies, if the CO$_2$ emissions from two sub-sections of energy sector could be reduced to even 10% of total emissions, the amount of 30 million metric tons of CO$_2$ could be mitigated.
