  • A Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available, and uses helium as a working fluid. The FPFD stirling cryocooler consists of two compressor pistons driven by linear motors which makes pressure waves and a pneumatically driven displacer piston with regenerator. It is the most suitable design for a mechanical cryocooler utilized in night vision environment. In order to get optimum operating frequency, natural frequency of piston and displacer, optimum phase angle between piston and displacer, cooling capacity, performance tests of the Stirling cryocooler by the frequency characteristics were performed.

  • In analysis of piping vibration of petrochemical plant, the forcing functions mainly depend upon the equipment working mechanism and vibration resources in the piping systems. In general, harmonic function is used for the system with rotary equipments. Mechanical driving frequencies, wave functions, and response spectrum are used for reciprocating compressors, surge vibration of long transfer piping, and seismic/wind vibration, respectively. In this study, for the spray injection case inside the pipe, forcing function was modeled, in which two different fluids are distributed uniformly. To confirm the results, the scheme used for the forcing function was applied for real piping system. The vibration mode of the real system was consistent with the 4th mode obtained by simulation using the forcing function formulated in this study.

  • A separate type thermosyphon can be utilized as a cooling device of electronic equipments (such as CPU of a personal computer or notebook). This study was carried out to investigate the cooling effect of separate type thermosyphon and to find the adequate parameters affecting the separate type thermosyphon. The heat transfer characteristics of separate type thermosyphon were obtained from experimental results. A $50{\times}50{\times}2 mm$ heat source was copied after CPU for the experiments. The results indicate that the device is capable of dissipating 60W of thermal energy and keeping the heat plate surface temperature under 50'E and the device can transfer heat from the evaporator to the condenser through natural circulation (without any external driving forces). Some transport phenomena of the working fluid and the heat transfer characteristics of the loop were observed in the experiments and are discussed in detail below.

  • A free piston and free displacer(FPFD) Stirling cryocooler for cooling infrared and cryo-sensors is currently under development at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials). A Stirling cryocooler is relatively compact, reliable, commercially available, and uses helium as a working fluid. The FPFD stirling cryocooler consists of two compressor pistons driven by linear motors which makes pressure waves and a pneumatically driven displacer piston with regenerator. The FPFD Stirling cryocooler employs 1) the Stirling cycle for refrigeration, 2) linear for driving the cryocooler, 3) spring and gas support systems, and 4) fine gap for clearance seals.

  • Variational method has played an important role in solving problems of uniqueness and existence of the nonlinear works as well as analysis. It will also be extremely useful for researchers in all branches of natural sciences and engineers working with non-linear equations economy, optimization, game theory and medicine. Recently, the existence of infinitely many weak solutions for some non-local problems of Kirchhoff type with Dirichlet boundary condition are studied [14]. Here, a suitable method is presented to treat the elliptic partial derivative equations, especially (p(x), q(x))-Laplacian-like systems. This kind of equations are used in the study of fluid flow, diffusive transport akin to diffusion, rheology, probability, electrical networks, etc. Here, the existence of infinitely many weak solutions for some boundary value problems involving the (p(x), q(x))-Laplacian-like operators is proved. The method is based on variational methods and critical point theory.

  • For high performance rotating machinery, unstable vibrations may occur caused by hydrodynamic forces such as oil film forces, clearance excitation forces generated by the working fluid, and etc. In order to improve the availability one has to take into account the vibrations very accurately. When designing a rotating machinery, the stability behavior and the resonance response can be obtained by calculation of the complex eigenvalues. A suitable modifications of seal and/or bearing design may effectively improve the stability and the response of a rotor system. This paper deals with the optimum length and clearance of seals and bearings to minimize the resonance response(Q factor) and to maximize the logarithmic decrement in the operating speed under the constraints of design variables. Also, for an avoidance of resonance region from the operating speed, an optimization technique has been used to yield the critical speeds as far from the operating speed as possible. The optimization method is used by the genetic algorithm, which is a search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics. The results show that the optimum design of seals and bearings can significantly improve the resonance and the stability of the pump rotor system.

  • In order to evaluate the applicability of thermosyphon as an equipment of heat transfer to the case where natural of low temperature and low density is necessary and to propose the possibility of using natural energy being clean and inexhaustible, a thermosypon using methanol as working fluid was constructed and its transfer characteristics were analysed. The wall temperature of the thermosyphon was maintained relatively uniform after rapid increase until after being heated about ten minutes regardless of the level of input powers to the evaporating section. Inner pressure of the thermosyphon increased rapidly until after ten minutes, and then increased slowly depending on the level of input power. But heat transfer coefficient of the condensible section decreased in inverse proportion to input powers of 250~300W, showing $1008.3{\sim}829.8W/m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C$. For the input powers of the thermosyphon within the range of 100~250W, heat transferred and heat flux increased relatively linearly showing, in the case of input powers of 250~300W, heat transfer efficiency considerable increased, showing 63.8%.

  • The power train of a concrete truck mixer reducer includes differential planetary gears to get a large reduction ratio for operating the mixer drum in a compact structure. These differential planetary gears are a very important part of the mixer reducer where strength problems are the main concern. Gear bending stress, gear compressive stress and scoring failure are the main concerns. Many failures in differential planetary gears are due to the insufficient gear strength and resonance problems caused by major excitation forces such as gear mating failure in the transmission. In the present study, where the excitation frequencies are the gear tooth passing frequencies of the mating gears, a Campbell diagram is used to calculate differential planetary gear critical speeds. Mode shapes and natural frequencies of the differential planetary gears are calculated by CATIA V5. These are used to predict gear resonance failures by comparing the working speed range with the critical speeds due to the gear transmission errors of the differential planetary gears.

  • The power train of hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) for 8-ton class forklift includes hydro-static units, hydraulic multi-wet disc brake & clutches and complex helical & planetary gears. The helical & planetary gears are key components of HMCVT's power train wherein strength problems are the main concerns including gear bending stress, gear compressive stress, and scoring failure. Many failures in power train gears of HMCVT are due to the insufficient gear strength and resonance problems caused by major excitation forces, such as gear transmission error of mating gear fair in the transmission. In this study, wherein excitation frequencies are the gear tooth passing frequencies of the mating gears, a Campbell diagram is used to calculate the power train gears' critical speeds. Mode shapes and natural frequencies of the power train gears are calculated by CATIA V5. These are used to predict resonance failures by comparing the actual working speed range with the critical speeds due to the gear transmission errors of HMCVT's power train gears.
