  • Chitin and chitosan has been almost neglected until 1960s, although they are the second largest biomass on earth. Their major use were as a natural flocculant for waste-water treatment, and partially used in the areas of food, feed industry, cosmetics and medicine. Possible sources of chitin among biomass were tested, and antibacterial activity and viscosity-concentration relation- ship of diluted acidic solution were examined.

  • China is rich in plant resources of various species. There are more than 3000 kinds of flowering plants distributed widely in the country. Throughout China's long history, many plants have been using for treatment of various diseases and playing very important role to support social civilization and prosperity. As present understanding, Chinese medicinal plants are rich sources of discovering and developing new natural drugs and lead compounds in China. To make the use of Chinese medicinal plants more scientific and more rational, its fundamental research should be strengthened, including studies on chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and its action mechanism.

  • Many of world's most successful and commercially-valuable medicines have been derived, directly or indirectly, from natural product sources. Scientists seeks to continue this trend by drawing upon the unique and extensive biota to discover new molecules with potential for development as new medicines. In attempting to generate as much chemical diversity as possible, there is a strategic emphasis on maximizing diversity at five key stages of the process.

  • Blind source separation (BSS) is a fundamental problem that is encountered in many practical applications. In most existing methods, stationary sources are considered higher-order statistics is necessary either explicitly or implicitly. But, many natural signals are nonstationary, and it is possible to perform BSS using only second-order statistics. Our method is based on only second order statistics. The algorithms are developed using the gradient descent method in orthogonality constraint and their performance is confirmed by numerical experiments.

  • The power outputs of renewable energy such as wind turbines and solar energy powers depend on natural sources. Accordingly, the power outputs of renewable energy is different from capacity rate at the time of peak load. Because of this gap, long term electricity power plan can have over-estimated reserve margin. So, this paper suggests the chronological approach to calculate the reliability assessment of renewable energy.

  • The relationships between aphids, plants, other organisms and some physical components of the environment are reviewed. Aspects considered include year cycles, polymorphism fecundity, relationship of different groups of aphids with particular groups of plants, honeydew, alarm pheromones, aposematic colouring, camouflage, colour variation within species, morphological variation within species, multivariate analysis and problems of its interpretation, parasitism, stridulating mechanisms, predators, coevolution of plants and aphids, plant galls, trapping aphids and the interpretation of trap catches, an curation of aphid collections. References are given to sources of information about aphids, with special reference to the Korean fauna.

  • In this paper, vibration sources of the BLOC motor are identified and the motor vibrations are reduced by structural modification. For vibration characteristic identification, vibration signals measured by an accelerometer when the BLOC motor is moving. These signals are presented in a waterfall plot in order to find the dependency of frequency components on the motor speed. It is found that main vibration source is BLOC motor test rig. From finite element analyses and some experiments, it is also found that resonances occur because the natural frequencies of the test rig exist in usual driving speed rang. To shift the natural frequencies outside the driving rang, the test rig is modified increase stiffness. It is verified that considerable amount of vibration are reduced by the structural modification.

  • In spite of the fact that the system of oriental medicine still remains in the realm of 'unproven-method of treatment', no one can deny that the oriental medicine is a rich source of idea and motivation for the discovery of new drug from natural sources. However, non-scientific, mystic hypothetical system of oriental medicine refuses to be revealed scientifically. For the purpose of drawing useful parameters for inductive reasoning of the system, a new approach which comprises statistical analyses of prescription was attempted in this study. One hundred and thirty two ginseng-compounds prescription in 'Bang-Yak-Hap-Pyon', one of the most popular formularies of oriental medicine in Korea, were analysed by multivariate analysis technique. The results revealed ginseng from many points of view, e.g., therapeutic indications, dose, and compatibility, etc. Among these, the most striking coincidence with scientific achievements of modern pharmacology, is the fact that the oriental medicine has characterized ginseng already from remote ancient times as neither a specific curative nor an aphrodisiac, but a non-specific adaptogenic drug for general infirmity.

  • Twenty-one strains isolated, cellulose decomposing fungi, were identified on the basis of morphological, physiological and biochemical properties as Acremonium sp., Aspergillus sp., Chaetomium sp., Chrysonilla sp., Doratomyces sp., Fusarium sp., Gliomastix sp., Penicillium sp., Trichoderma sp., Varicosporium sp. and Verticillium sp.. The optimum tempeture for growth was in the range of $20-30^{\circ}C$. Most of the isolated stains utilized all tested carbon sources, and scarcely utilized urea as a nitrogen source. Only the strain No.2 had high activity of cellulase.

  • Some trials to alter the structure of extracellular polysaccharides by means of biotransformation and microbial modification have been reported. Seaweed alginate was acetylated by intact and resting cells of Pseudomonas syringae ATCC 19304. Glucose analogs such as 3-O-methyl-D-glucose used as sole carbon sources was directly incorporated into curdlan by agrobacterium sp. ATCC 31749. The 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose (glucosamine)and 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose (N-acetylglucosamine) were incorporated into microbial cellulose by Acetobacter xylinum ATCC 10245. The changed monomeric composition in pullulan by Aureobasidium pullulans ATCC 42023 as well as zooglan by Zoogoea ramigera ATCC 25935 was another effect of glucose analogs used a carbon source. There was no effect of glucose analogs found in polysacharide-7 (PS-7) produced by Beijerinckia indica. ATCC 21423.
