Yeongsan-eupseong is located at Seongnae-ri, Yeongsan-myeon, Changnyeong-gun, Korea. We investigated the petrological features of the stone materials used for the rampart, and estimated their provenances. The stone materials consist of andesitic rocks, granitic rocks and sedimentary rocks. In the preserved rampart the andesitic rocks are relatively abundant, whereas the large number of granitic rocks are used for restoration. Chaeyaksan andesite and Chusan andesite are thought to be the source for the andesitic rocks. The original granitic rocks are of granite porphyry, and are likely to have been delivered from the near granite porphyry outcrops. On the other hand the granitic rocks used for restoration are classified to be biotite granite. The sedimentary rocks show thermally metamorphosed feature and changed to hornfels. The source for the hornfels is the contact area between the sedimentary rocks and granitic rocks near the Yeongsan-eupseong.
The present work aims to optimize the radiation protection efficiency for ion-selective containers used in the liquid treatment for the nuclear power plant (NPP) cooling cycle. Some naturally occurring rocks were examined as filler materials to reduce absorbed dose and equivalent dos received from the radioactive waste container. Thus, the absorbed dose and equivalent dose were simulated at a distance of 1 m from the surface of the radioactive waste container using the Monte Carlo simulation. Both absorbed dose and equivalent dose rate are reduced by raising the filler thickness. The total absorbed dose is reduced from 7.66E-20 to 1.03E-20 Gy, and the equivalent dose is rate reduced from 183.81 to 24.63 µSv/h, raising the filler thickness between 0 and 17 cm, respectively. Also, the filler type significantly affects the equivalent dose rate, where the redorded equivalent dose rates are 24.63, 24.08, 27.63, 33.80, and 36.08 µSv/h for natural rocks basalt-1, basalt-2, basalt-sill, limestone, and rhyolite, respectively. The mentioned results show that the natural rocks, especially a thicker thickness (i.e., 17 cm thickness) of natural rocks basalt-1 and basalt-2, significantly reduce the gamma emissions from the radioactive wastes inside the modified container. Moreover, using an outer cementation concrete wall of 15 cm causes an additional decrease in the equivalent dose rate received from the container where the equivalent dose rate dropped to 6.63 µSv/h.

The basaltic rocks of Daljeon-ri columnar joint (Natural Monuments # 415) and Noeseongsan Noerok site (Natural Monuments # 547) were analysed in order to understand basalt types of two areas. The basaltic rocks of the Pohang Daljeon-ri columnar joint show a typical porphyritic texture containing phenocrysts (olivine and clinopyroxene) and groundmasses composed of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and opaque minerals,. In contrast, basaltic rocks of Noeseongsan Noerok are characterized by fine-grained groundmass with large phenocrysts of plagioclase. Other analysis such as magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence also support the petrological differences of two basalt rocks. The Daljeon-ri basaltic rocks are plotted on phonotephrite volcanic rocks of alkaline series in TAS(total alkali silica), and on within plate basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. The Noeseongsan basalts, on the other hand, are plotted on basaltic andesite to andesite of sub-alkaline series in TAS, and on volcanic arc basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. These results indicate that the original mantle materials between two basalt rocks were different each other, which probably originated from the change of a tectonic setting in the southeastern Korean peninsula during the Miocene.
56 samples were analyzed to understand water quality of the natural mineral water of Korea. The geology according to each sample location is grouped into Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Okcheon metamorphic rocks, Jurassic granite, Cretaceous granite, and Jeju volcanic rocks. Average EC and pH values of the water is 150 μS/cm and 7.3, respectively and water type of the water is mainly Ca-Na-HCO3. Fundamentally, there still is no problem for the water quality of the natural mineral water. Nevertheless, nitrate was detected and arsenic and fluoride contents are near the drinking water standards, it is highly necessary to manage the water quality by installment of casing and grouting or by development of another production well.
In recent years, various social issues related to the natural radioactive elements detected in household goods and building materials are addressed, and should be solved promptly. In Korea, for more than 20 years, the Ministry of Environment has investigated the natural radioactive materials such as heavy metals, uranium, and radon in soil or groundwater. The origins of natural radioactive materials in them may have a close correlation with the geological factors including classification of rocks, petrogenetic origins, and deformation characteristics, but the exact geological correlations are not clarified because of the absence of the government policy preserved in the basement rocks, soils as well as groundwater in fault-related reservoirs. This study aims to perform a research on the correlation between the petrogeneses of the Phanerozoic plutonic rocks and natural radioactive concentrations in rocks (radon, uranium, thorium, potassium etc.) in Korea. Among the Phanerozoic plutonic rocks, alkaline plutonic rocks (syenite, monzonite and monzodiorite and alkali granite) show high U and Th concentrations by high solubilities of U, Th, Zr, REE, and Nb until the most extreme stages of magmatic fractionation (viz. crystal fractionation) due to high magma temperature and high alkalinity tendency. The highly fractionated high-K calalkaline and peraluminous granitic rocks (leucogranite, two-mica granite and leucocratic pegmatite are also U and Th concentrations compared with other less or medium fractionated granitic rocks (diorite, granodiorite and granite). The alkaline plutonic rocks are associated with intracontinental rifting and extensional environment after crustal thickening by collisional and subductional processes. In contrast, the dominant calc-alkaline granitic rocks in Korea are related to the arc environment of the subduction zone. In summary, the trends of the U, Th and K concentration from the Phanerozoic plutonic rocks in Korea are closely linked to the petrogenesis of the rocks in tectonic environment. The preliminary data for gamma-spectrometric mesurments of natural radionuclide contents (226Ra, 232Th and 40K) in the Phanerozoic plutonic rocks show high values in the alkaline and highly fractionated granitic rocks.
During the spring and fall of 1994 and winter of 1995, the exposure time of periphyton biomass on terval. In the streams with low periphyton biomass (chi. a: 2-4 mg/$m^2$) in natural rocks, biomass of arttificial substrata (unglazed tile: $3.7{\times}9.5{\times}2 cm$) exceeded that of the natural rocks after 28 days, while sites with high biomass (chi. a: 20-60 mg/$m^2$) in natural rocks showed slower biomass accumulation after 40 days. Due to the high licht input and temperature in a Partially shaded mountain stream, development of periphyton biomass in spring occurred faster than that of winter. In general, development of periphyton biomass placed on artificial substrata took 4-5 weeks in spring and at least 6 weeks In winter to reach the natural level.

Silvetia siliquosa is an ecologically and commercially important brown alga that is harvested from its natural habitats, but its population has recently been diminishing along the Korean coast. To develop new techniques for algal population restoration, we tested two newly developed transplantation methods (using polyethylene ropes and natural rock pieces) at two study sites, Gwanmaedo and Yeongsando, on the southwest coast of Korea, from May to November 2014. The transplants on polyethylene ropes showed significantly greater survival, maturity, and growth than those on natural rocks at both study sites. Newly recruited juveniles (<3 cm) of S. siliquosa increased remarkably from May to December near the transplants on polyethylene ropes and natural rocks. Therefore, we suggest that transplantation using polyethylene ropes is more effective than using natural rocks to restore the population of S. siliquosa in Korea.
Igneolls rocks of the Hamyang area consist of Hamyang foliated granites and hornblende diorite. Hamyang foliated granites are classified into four rock types in terms of mineral composition and texture. The four rock types are foliated hornblende biotite granodiorite, foliated porphrytic granodiorite, foliated fine biotite granodiorite and foliated leuco granite. Petrochemical data of these rocks suggest that Hamyang foliated granites is calc-alkali rock series of differentiated products of cogenetic magma by fractional crystallization. Igneous rocks of studied area correspond to I-type, peraluminous and calc alkali rock series. Rb-Sr age and $Sr^{87}/Sr^{86}$ initial ratio for foliated prophrytic granodiorite is $200{\pm}Ma$and $0.711{\pm}0.0037$, respectively. K-Ar(hornblende) age of hornblende diorite is $179{\pm}9Ma$. These data come to an coincidence with Igneous activity of South Korea which were proposed by O.J. Kim(1975), that is, they correspond to Hamyang foliated granites of products of Songrim Disturbance, and to hornblende diorite of Daebo Orogeny.
Mineral compositions of granitic rocks from Geochang, Pocheon, Iksan, and China were obtained by the modal analysis, CIPW norm calculations, and Rietveld quantitative analysis for stone specification of the Geochang granitic rocks. The Geochang granitic rocks show grey to dark in color and medium grained porphyritic texture. They mainly consist of quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, and biotite. Among three different method for determining the mineral compositions of granitic rocks, normative compositions using X-ray fluorescence data are not appropriate for representing real mineral composition. Rietveld quantitative analysis using X-ray powder diffraction data is proved better method to determine exact mineral compositions than modal analysis using microscopic observation. Q-A-P diagram shows that the Geochang granitic rocks are typical granodiorite, whereas the granitic rocks of Pocheon, Iksan, and China are monzogranite, monzogranite to granodiorite, and granodiorite, respectively. Compared to China ones, the Geochang granitic rocks are nearly close to each other in mineral composition.
The mass attenuation coefficient ${\mu}_m$ for eight rock samples having different chemical composition was simulated using the MCNP 5 code in energy range($0.002MeV{\leq}E{\leq}10MeV$). Moreover, the ${\mu}_m$ for the studied rock samples was computed theoretically using XCOM database. The comparison between simulated and computed data for all selected rock samples showed a good agreement with differences varied between 0.01 and 8%. The highest ${\mu}_m$ was found for basalt rocks M2 and M1 and the lowest one is reported for limestone rocks Dike. The simulated values of the ${\mu}_m$ then were used to calculate other important shielding parameters such as the mean free path, effective electron density and effective atomic number. The exposure buildup factor EBF was also computed for the selected rocks with the contribution of G-P fitting parameters and the highest EBF attended by the basalt sample Sill and varied between 1.022 and 744 in the energy range between ($0.015MeV{\leq}E{\leq}15MeV$) but the lowest EBF achieved by basalt sample M2 and varied between 1.017 and 491 in the same energy range.
