  • This paper is intended to investigate the awareness of the elementary school students about the natural environment preservation. For this purpose, 21 elementary school students from the 5th grade of elementary school located in Gwangju city were selected. Especially, we focused on the students' conceptions related to 1) the environments, 2) the safe national land development activity to face several natural disasters and 3) the environmental preservation with the national land development. To evaluate the change of students' conceptions for the national land development, the students were also participated in establishing the plan of the national land development using the model of the natural environment after learning in detail about the natural environments. The results of this study showed that most of the students recognized the concept of the environments as a simple knowledge itself and pollution rather than the protection of environment. In the course of the safe national land development activity to face several natural disasters, the students expressed standardized answer indicating the knowledge based thinking of the environments. According to the results of the environmental preservation with the national land development and the hypothetical project of the national land development, the students did not have enough knowledge for the natural environment preservation although they had understanding of natural disasters and environmental preservation. Therefore, it is necessary to stress affirmative concept for the environment related to the preservation of natural environment. Also we need to develop the syllabus, which is related to the environmental studies, in the elementary educational program leading students to participate in the environmental preservation with the national land development reasonably and practically.

  • This review was made to discuss the issues of ecological restoration and environmental impact assessment (EIA) related to the preservation of natural environment, the central theme expressed in the National Anthem of Korea. The authors notice that the key word or the central philosophy contained in the verses of the National Anthem of Korea is the preservation of national land and eternal identity for future generations, which is thought to be pursued through the attainment of ecological sustainability. A conceptual model for the sustainable management of natural ecosystems was suggested for the efficient utilization and the preservation of them, whose activities should be promoted by those of conservation and restoration instead of destructive development and negligence, respectively. Here, the preservation of natural environment can be directly pursued through the restoration of degraded ecosystems and landscapes and the utilization of natural environment can be directly pursued through the conservation of natural resources and wise management of natural ecosystems and landscapes. After reviewing the major characteristics and activities of the restoration of degraded ecosystems and landscapes, discussion was further extended to points for the promotion of the EIA activities. To point out some of them, it is needed for the public to better understand the nature of sustainable management of natural environment, for the society to put extensive energy and resources in the restoration of degraded ecosystems and landscapes, and for the government to install higher levels of ministries than that of the Ministry of Environment in dealing with the issues related to the 'preservation' of national land, people, culture and the security of the sustainability for future generations, where EIA and strategic environment assessment (SEA) can directly contribute to the sustainability of the country and future generations.

  • Self-preservation effect was identified by means of macroscopic dissociation experiments after keeping natural gas hydrate samples at 258 K for 15 days. The hydrate samples were formed using synthetic natural gas hydrate whose compositions are 90% $CH_4$, 7% $C_2H_6$, and 3% $C_3H_8$. In addition, during the formation, heavy hydrocarbons of propane and ethane are found to occupy hydrate cages in a more favorable way than methane so as to change the gas composition after hydrate formation. Experimental results obtained in this study can provide useful information on applications of natural gas hydrate for storing or transporting natural gas in the form of solid hydrate.

  • In order to study the natural preservation of food, sixteen kinds of medicinal plants were extracted by 80% methanol and then antimicrobial activity of the extracts was investigated against various kinds of microorganisms. The extracts of medicinal plants showed good effects of antimicrobial activity against bacteria except Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli O-157. Especially, the extracts of Artemisia annua, Aster scaber, Solidago virganrea shower good inhibitory effects on the growth of bacteria to the cooling preservation foods, and Artemisia annua was decreased of the TMA(Trimethylamine) test. the result thus indicate that Artemisia annua, Aster scaber, Solidago fischeri extract inhibitory effects on cooling preservation foods, so that it may be potential as a natural preservatives.

  • This study tried to propose the guidelines for the ecological preservation zoning in Korea. So some related laws and regulations were inspected, which were Natural Environment Preservation Act, Nature Park Act, Cultural Asset Conservation Act, Forest Act and Urban Planning Act. In these acts, I could find several concepts related to the ecosystem that are described as the protection area. But there aren't detailed and practical characteristics in those concepts. So for making the practical concept of ecosystem preservation, I considered Multiple Use Module, Wildlife habitat model, and Environmental evaluation model. Thorough this step, the process and methodology was established for evaluating and analysing. The potentiality of the GIS system was inspected. So the TM5 scene of the site was acquired and processed by ER-Mapper, Idrisi, Arc/Info and Arcview. And several digitized data were input by scanning and vecterizing. The Erdas format was mostly exchangeable to any program. The site is the Byonsan Peninsula National Park. The forest stand information and topographic data were digitized, types of which are forest year, DBH, density, slope, aspect etc. And also the watershed boundary, roads and paths, natural and cultural resources were mapped and analysed. Modelling of preservation suitability found the dispersed patterns for the best suitable zone through all the site. And the development potential areas were checked on downwatershed. This patterns are thought to result from the forest location for the wildlife habitat and the low altitude and no-steep slopes for developing. And Early warning system concept was introduced by overlapping these two patterns on the both potential area. As the conclusions, I proposed that the preservation zone be assigned according to the watershed unit as the main ecosystem zone. This main area should be linked by the eco-corridor through the point type eco-system. Finally, I thought the comprehensive information system should be established for making the rational and efficient decision making in natural area.

  • It has been known that ginseng extract contains several polyacetylene components. But we found only two polyacetylene components in the freshly prepared ginseng extract. Long-term preservation of ginseng or ginseng extract produced many artifact polyacetylenes. The ratio of artifact/genuine polyacetylene was determined by TLC-densitometry on long-term preserved ginseng samples. The results indicated that the ratio was increased proportionally with the span of preservation.

  • The natural ecology of our coastal zone has been well preserved because of the designation of Han-Ryea national sea park. However, recently, it is being threatened by the frequent request of district regulation of national park and relaxation of green belt, etc. And also, with the reclamation of the foreshore by the development of industrial complex and tourism resource cultivation on a large scale, development pressure for natural coast is increasing. For that reason, preservation of the ecology, organized management and investigation is needed for the islands which scenery is beautiful and rare animals and plants inhabit. And also, it is worried that major habitats of migrants are diminishing because of the district regulation of national park, relaxation of green belt zone and construction of coastal streets. Therefore. on the basis of the through environmental impact assessment, only the business which are aimed at the preservation and restoration of the natural coast should be admitted and the act of eroding must be restricted.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the landscape characteristics by making DEM, land use map, and the land cover map on the Odesan national park, and to suggest the method of visual management through the visibility analysis. In the change of land use district, the natural environment district decreased, the natural preservation district extended relatively. It means that the tendency of preservation was strengthened. However, the development possibility has increased by increase as for the area of the village district. In the land cover change, it appeared agriculture area and city area increase in the natural environmental district. The most area where visible frequency appeared highly belonged to the natural preservation district and forest region. However some areas belonged to the natural environmental area, and continuous landscape management was required.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze college students' perception of national natural heritages, including natural monumentsand scenic sites, in comparison with the similar concepts of national parks and eco-landscape preservation areas, to suggest managerial implications to enhance competitiveness. The first objective of this study is to measure their attitude toward traveling each type of natural heritage and to rate the relative importance of the four types of heritages in terms of preservation. Natural monuments were perceived as the most strongly preserved type, while scenic sites were perceived as the least strongly preserved type. The second objective is to conduct a correspondence analysis to match the concepts of four types of natural heritages with 10 tourist attractions representing the types. It was found that college students have difficulty appropriately identifying the types of 10 tourist attractions. In addition, multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) was implemented to identify the similarities and differences of the four types of natural heritages and to produce a positioning map matching the four types of natural heritages with the six attributes representing each type as a tourist attraction. Natural monuments were perceived very differently from scenic sites and not very differently from eco-landscape preservation areas. There were a few associations between the four types of natural heritages and the six tourism attributes, implying that little effort is made to promote and position each type of natural heritage in terms of tourism. In conclusion, a public awareness program is required to enhance the brand image of natural monuments and scenic sites in comparison to national parks and eco-landscape preservation areas. In addition, local residents who live near the natural heritages should be bolstered to play a managerial role as supporters and contents providers for sustainability.

  • With their deity groves, Japanese Shinto shrines form unique green spaces. Further, many shrines are located between a settlement and the rural or natural environment. This location relates to the nature-worship of the Shinto tradition. However, when visiting present shrine precincts, it gives the impression that their original landscape location and green space is impaired by urban changes. This study focuses on the point how the scenic condition of district shrines at the fringe of Tokyo is challenged in the present, and presents an example of a successful preservation in the urban area. The key point of such preservation is that it goes beyond the shrine precinct itself. If there still exists a natural or beautiful scenery next to a shrine with some distinct historical or religious relationship, both shrine and scenery should be preserved together.
