  • Weld pool oscillation for the full-penetration GTA welding process was investigated for its possible application to weld penetration control through theoretical modeling and experiment. Energy method was used to estimate the natural frequency of the molten pool having the physically-acceptable weld geometry and oscillation modes. An unique experimental system was built which had the data acquisiton and video capabilities so that the pool oscillation signals and molten pool surfaces could be monitored continuously. Pool oscillation was detected through arc voltage and arc light emission simultaneously. The signal from arc light emission showed good coherence with that from arc voltage, and arc light generated the higher quality signal. The molten pool was found to oscillate in different oscillation modes based on the travel speed and weld geometry. The natural frequency estimated from the theoretical model agreed reasonably well with the experimental results.

  • This paper presents a design methodology for improving dynamic stiffness of an inspection robot frame to prevent resonance. Finite element models of robot frame are developed for natural frequency analysis. Natural frequency analysis of robot frame is conducted to compare with sub-span oscillation which is excitation frequency. Reinforcement beams are applied to the sensitive parts of the robot frame to improve dynamic stiffness using case study. To reduce mass of the robot frame, thickness optimization of the robot frame is carried out by utilizing response surface method. The result of optimization show that dynamic stiffness of robot frame is increased. As a result, natural frequency of an optimal model is not included in range of frequencies of the sub-span oscillation.

  • Flame oscillation phenomena in a co-flow diffusion flame was experimentally studied with periodic fuel supply using a solenoid valve. The degree of excitation was controlled by changing the volume flux of fuel passing through the valve. Flame oscillation frequencies were measured utilizing a photodiode, a spectrum analyzer, video and high speed movies. Laser planar visualization was employed to study the correlation between the flame oscillation and the toroidal vortices. Observed are three regimes of flame oscillation, where the oscillation frequencies are for the multiples of excitation, the excitation itself and the flame natural oscillation. Both periods of natural oscillation and of excitation induced oscillation exist over one cycle of the excitation in the frequency multiplied regime. It is considered as an effect of balancing the influence of buoyancy driven vortex with that of excitation induced vortex near the excitation rate of 0.2. Flame shapes are become monotonous as increasing the excitation frequency to the range of over two fold of the natural oscillation. The flame oscillation can be modulated to the frequency of either multiples of excitation or excitation itself under certain conditions. This implies that the flame oscillation could be modulated to avoid the resonance frequency of the combustor, and shows the possibility of active control of the flame oscillation.

  • This paper presents a frequency analysis of subspan oscillation on overhead transmission line. The Oscillation frequency is a natural characteristic of a subspan and can be calculated. But it is not same to calculated frequency, because it has been composed several frequencies of adjacent subspan. We were analyzed to the frequency of subspan oscillation by FFT methods. This result will use to establish of the subspan location rules.

  • Lock-on characteristics of the flow around a circular cylinder performing a rotationally oscillation with a relatively high forcing frequency have been investigated experimentally using flow visualization and hot-wire measurements. Dominant parameters are Reynolds number (Re), amplitude of oscillation $(\theta_A)$, and frequency ratio $F_R=f_f\;/\;f_n$, where $f_f$ is the forcing frequency and if is the natural frequency of vortex shedding. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of $Re=4.14\times10^3,\;\pi/15\leq\theta_A\leq\pi/3$, and $F_R=1.0$. The effects of this active control technique on the lock-on flow regime of the cylinder wake were evaluated through wake velocity measurements and spectral analysis of hot-wire signals. The rotary oscillation modified the flow structure of near wake significantly. The lock-on phenomenon was found to occur in the range of frequency encompassing the natural vortex shedding frequency. In addition, when the amplitude of oscillation is less than a certain value, the lock-on phenomenon was occurred only at $F_R=1.0$. The lock-on range expanded and vortex formation length decreased as the amplitude of oscillation increases. The rotary oscillation generated small-scale vortex structure just near the cylinder surface.

  • The aim of the present study is to provide fundamental informations for the development of magneticfluid actuator. To achieve the aim, oscillation characteristics of the magneticfluid plug are investigated by experiment for the various length and position of the magneticfluid plug and the frequency of magnetic field. The oscillation characteristics are obtained. Amplitude, natural frequency, phase shift and damping ratio, are compared with theoretical values. From the study, the following conclusive remarks can be made. The experimental equation for the magnetic field is obtained. The critical magneticfluid length exists and its value is about 70mm. The range of the damping ratio and fluid loss coefficient obtained by experiment are 0.1~0.2 and 30~100, respectively. Comparison between experimental and theoretical results of oscillation characteristics shows good agreement in the high frequency range. Meanwhile, in the low frequency range, there appears little discrepancies(5% in the frequency and amplitude and 10% in phase difference and damping ratio) with each other.

  • The bubble model by Keller and Prosperetti is adapted to solve the nonlinear oscillation of a gas bubble. This formulation leads to accurate results since it introduces the energy equation instead of the polytropic assumption for the bubble interior. The numerical method used in this study is stable enough to handle large amplitude of bubble oscillation. The numerical results show some interesting nonlinear phenomena fur the bubble oscillator. The excitation changes the natural frequency of the bubble and makes some harmonic resonances at $f/f_0=1/2, 1/3$ and so on. The natural frequency of a bubble oscillator decreases compared with the linear case result, which means that the nonlinear bubble oscillation system is a "softening"system. In addition, the frequency response curve jumps up or down at a certain frequency. It is also found that there exist multi-valued regions in the frequency response curve depending on the initial conditions of bubble. The dependency of the bubble motion on the initial condition can generate extremely large pressure and temperature which might be the cause of the acoustic cavitation and the sonoluminescence.inescence.

  • Film boiling is of great importance in nuclear safety as it directly influences the integrity of nuclear fuel in case of accidents involving loss of coolant. Recently, nuclear power plant safety under earthquake conditions has received much attention. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no existing studies reporting film boiling in an oscillating system. Most previous studies for film boiling were performed on stationary systems. In this study, numerical simulations were performed for saturated film boiling of water on a horizontal surface under low frequencies to investigate the effect of system oscillation on film boiling heat transfer. A coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid method was used to track the interface between the vapor and liquid phases. With a fixed oscillation amplitude, overall, heat transfer decreases with oscillation frequency. However, there is a frequency region in which heat transfer remains nearly constant. This lock-on phenomenon occurs when the oscillation frequency is near the natural bubble release frequency. With a fixed oscillation frequency, heat transfer decreases with oscillation amplitude. With a fixed maximum amplitude of the additional gravity, heat transfer is affected little by the combination of oscillation amplitude and frequency.

  • A varactor diode was utilized in order to expand variable range of the natural oscillation frequency of an active phased-array antenna. We have conformed experimentally that the variable range of the natural oscillation frequency was expanded about three times in the oscillator controlled by the varactor diode. When frequency difference was given to the oscillators in the two elements antenna system, phase difference was appeared between the oscillators. The 2-, 3-, 5-elements patch antenna array was composed for the beam scanning experiments. All the above patch antennas showed good phased array characteristics. The experimental results are as follows that the scanning angle of the 2-elements array antenna is 28.6$^{\circ}$, the 3-elements array antenna is 29.4$^{\circ}$, and the 5-elements array antenna is 26.2$^{\circ}$.
