Changes in Chromaticity and 6 Mineral Contents of Sea Mustards according to Several Cooking Methods (조리에 따른 미역중의 색도 및 무기성분의 변화)

  • This study aimed to determine the effects of cooking treatment on chromaticity and 6 mineral contents (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, sodium and potassium) in sea mustards. Four samples of natural and cultured sea mustard were used for the experiments. Each sample was treated with four cooking methods (A: soaked in water, B: boiled in hot water, C: saute and boiled in hot water, D: seasoned with vinegar). The L, a and b values were the highest on boiling, and the lowest on seasoning with vinegar. The a value of cultured sea mustard was higher than the natural one by cooking. Moisture was highest boiling and were ordered as saute and boiling, soaking and seasoning with vinegar. Calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphorus contents were remarkably decreased by seasoning with vinegar. Boiling treatment made less decrease than saut and boiling in these mineral contents. The solubilities of mineral in soup water were recognized therefore, it indicated that soup water was a good source of minerals as it applies to cooking, from the view point of science of cookery. Sodium and potassium contents decreased significantly more at 68% and 85% of total content on basic soaking treatment. Ca/P ratio was about 1∼3 : 1 in cultured sea mustard and 3∼4 : 1 levels in natural one.

  • This paper reports an experimental study into the rheological behaviour of Smart Dynamic Concrete (SDC). The investigation is aimed at quantifying the effect of the varying amount of mineral admixtures on the rheology, setting time and compressive strength of SDC containing natural sand and crushed sand. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in conjunction with the mineral admixtures was used in different replacement ratio keeping the mix paste volume (35%) and water binder ratio (0.4) constant at controlled laboratory atmospheric temperature ($33^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$). The results show that the properties and amount of fine aggregate have a strong influence on the admixture demand for similar initial workability, i.e., flow. The large amounts of fines and lower value of fineness modulus (FM) of natural sand primarily increases the yield stress of the SDC. The mineral admixtures at various replacement ratios strongly contribute to the yield stress and plastic viscosity of SDC due to inter particle friction and cohesion.

  • Probably over most of recorded time, the quality of drinking water has been praised for good health and blamed for bad health. Certainly it is true, considering pathogenic organism that cause typhoid fever, giardiasis, etc., or considering chemical contaminants suspected of causing cancer. Drinking "natural" waters with a high mineral content is generally accepted to be healthy. Water containing very low levels of total dissolved solids (TDS), such as distilled water, is believed by some to help "cure" arthritis by "washing out" calcium from deposits in joints. Along with this reasoning, many believe that drinking very tow TDS water, treated by distillation, reverse osmosis (RO) or deionization (DD, "leaches" minerals from the body and causes mineral deficiencies with subsequent ill health effects.cies with subsequent ill health effects.

  • Dewatered sludge of 400,000t/y from water treatment plants in Korea is being disposed through landfill and ocean dumping. However, the disposal is posing more and more serious environmental problems at the same time not only because of landfill site shortage in municipal suburbs, but because of the concern it will contaminate the oceans. In this study, the research on utilizing the sludge dried by flash dryer as covering soil in the landfill sites was carried out to solve these problems on environmental affinity. Both dewatered and dried sludge were exposed to the natural condition and observed according to the atmospheric changes. An experiment of soil engineering characteristics of the dried sludge and tests on mixed sludge(silty sandy soil : dried sludge = 10:90 ~ 30:70) such as particle size distribution, liquid and plastic limit, moisture content, specific gravity and compaction test were carried out. According to the compaction test, the compaction was confirmed as the optimum water content ratio was observed in the condition of SM-silty sand of particle size distribution, NP of liquid and plastic limit, 101.4% of moisture content, 2.04~2.12 of specific gravity. The results showed that dried sludges mixed with at least 30% of natural soil could be used as daily covering soil in the landfill sites.

  • Calcium and magnesium in polished rice, polished barley, what flour, and corn which were used for Yakju fermentation were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and their quantitative changes in the filtrates of mashes were checked at 24 hours intervals dueing the whole brewing period. The results obtained were as follows. 1) Mineral contens of raw materials(mg% of each anhydrous materials). Ca : polished rice 8.21, polished barley 26.11, wheat flour 66.10, corn 86.63 2) Mineral contents of kojies made from raw materials (mg %of each anhydrous materials). Ca : rice koji 26.36, barley koji 97.61, what flour koji 87.69, corn koji 16.13, seeding koji 28.76 Mg: rice koji 29.29, barley koji 39.84, what flour koji 244.50, corn koji 102.64, seeding koji 143.79 3) Quantitative changes of minerals in the fitrates of mashes. Calcium contents in the filtrates of mashes were increased gradually after mashing in the first stage but unchanged till the mashes were ripened after mashing in the second stage. On the other hand, magnesium cotents were decreased gradually after increase in the the other hand, magnesium contens were decreased gradually after increase in the first stage but showed a tendency to increase gradually in the second stage. 4)Mineral contents of Yakjues produced, marketing Yakju, and natural water for brewing (g/ml). Daily Water Consumption and its Contribution to Calcium Intake in Korean Adults (한국 일부 성인의 수분 섭취와 수분을 통한 칼슘 섭취량 평가)

  • Objectives: Although water is essential for life and can supply essential minerals, studies that evaluate calcium intake through drinking water are limited. The aim of this study was to assess calcium contents of natural mineral water (NMW) and its possible contribution to calcium intake in healthy adults. Methods: This study examined water consumption in 640 Korean adults with self-selected diet, analyzed the calcium content of 10 different brands of bottled NMWs sold in Korea, and assessed the amount of calcium intake from drinking water and its daily contribution to the recommended nutrient intake (RNI) of calcium. Results: Mean calcium content in 10 bottled NMWs was 20.9 mg/l. Daily water intakes from food composition database and calculated using energy intake based on 0.53 ml/kcal were 957.2 ml and 1109.8 ml for men and 848.3 ml and 951.6 ml for women, respectively, with a significant difference by gender (p<0.001). Daily drinking water intake was significantly higher among men than women (1203.9 ml vs. 1004.3 ml, respectively, p<0.001). Daily calcium intakes from foods were 564.0 mg for men and 534.2 mg for women. Daily possible calcium intakes from drinking bottled water were 25.2 mg for men and 21.0 mg for women (p<0.001). The contribution of daily calcium intake from drinking bottled water to RNI of calcium was 3.3% for men and 2.9% for women without significant difference. Conclusions: One half of the daily total water intake was consumed as drinking water, and possible calcium intake through drinking water was about 3% of RNI.

Au-Ag Minerals and Geneses of Weolyu Gold-Silver Deposits, Chungcheongbukdo, Republic of Korea (월유광산산(月留鑛山産) 금(金)-은(銀)광물(鑛物)과 광상(鑛床)의 생성환경(生成環境))

  • The Weolyu gold-silver deposits at Hwanggan, Chungcheongbukdo, is of a late Cretaceous $(74.24{\pm}1.63Ma)$ epithermal vein-type, and is hosted in the quartz porphyry of late Cretaceous age. Based on mineral paragenetic sequence interpreted from vein structure and mineral assemblages, three stages mineralization were distinguished. A variety of ore minerals occurs including pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena with small amount of electrum, native silver, argentite, pearceite, sb-pearceite, argyrotite. The gangue minerals are quartz, rutile, calcite, apatite, fluorite and rhodochrocite. Wall-rock alteration such as pyritization, chloritization, sericitization, silicification is observed near the quartz veins. Au-Ag minerals were crystallized at middle and late stage of the two mineralization sequences. Results from the analysis of fluid inclusion and thermodynamic calculation indicate that Au-Ag mineral deposits were formed primarily by cooling and dilution of hydrothermal fluids($165{\sim}313^{\circ}C$, 0.4~2.4wt.% equivalent NaCl) with some degree mixing of meteoric water.

Natural Organic Matter Removal and Fouling Control in Low-Pressure Membrane Filtration for Water Treatment

  • Natural organic matter (NOM) is a primary component of fouling in low-pressure membrane filtration, either solely, or in concert with colloidal particles. Various preventive measures to interfere with NOM fouling have been developed and extensively tested, such as coagulation, oxidation, ion exchange, carbon adsorption, and mineral oxide adsorption. Therefore, this article aims to conduct a literature review covering the topics of low-pressure membrane processes, NOM characteristics and fouling behaviors, and diverse fouling control strategies. In-depth explanations and discussion are made regarding why some treatment options are able to remove NOM from source water, but do not reduce fouling. This review provides insight for hybridized membrane processes with respect to NOM removal and fouling mitigation in water treatment.

  • This study was carried out to find the relationships between species pairs in the vegetation of eastern valley vegetation in Mt. Kumjung from September 20, 1991 to October 15, 1992. Eight sites were selected, each being divided into 5 quadrats, and thus 40 quad- rats were in total. To know the correlation among plant species the $x^2$ values were calculated by using the method of Yates, and the results were analyzed by cluster analysis according to Sneath and Sokal, and the following conclusions were obtained. The species examined can be subdivided into five groups according to the relationships. However, the relationships are not correlated with pH, water-content, maximum water holding capacity and mineral content of soil probably due to the environmental discontinuity.

  • Romania aims to adopt and implement the European Union's legislation, also including that for the field of water management. Like other countries, groundwater in Romania is locally polluted from point sources, such as leaking landfills, as well as from diffuse pollution sources, include fertilizers, pesticides and leakages from sewers, in urbanized areas. Diffuse pollution can also occur indirectly, by over-exploitation of groundwater wells, resulting in salt water intrusion, as well as from mining and exploitation of mineral aggregates. Romania has quite an intensive monitoring scheme to measure groundwater quality in phreatic and confined aquifers. The purpose of the work resumed in this paper was to derive natural background levels (NBL) for groundwater in order to distinguish the natural elevated concentrations of some substances (natural phenomena) from point and diffuse pollution (anthropogenic phenomena). Based on these NBLs, threshold values (TV) for groundwater will be set according to the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive and the related Groundwater Directive. This paper describes the results of a study for the derivation of NBL and TV in a pilot Groundwater Body. Also, the process and draft results for extrapolating this work for all Romanian groundwater bodies is explained, as well as points for future consideration with respect to monitoring and management.
