Some biodegradable polymers and other materials such as hydrogels have shown the promising potential for surgical applications. Post surgical adhesion caused by the natural consequence of surgical wound healing results in repeated surgery and harmful effects. Recently, scientists have developed absorbable anti-adhesion barriers that can protect a tissue from adhesion in case they are in use; however, they are dissolved when no longer needed. Although these approaches have been attempted to fulfill the criteria for adhesion prevention, none can perfectly prevent adhesions in all situations. Overall, we developed a new method to fabricate an anti-adhesion membrane using biodegradable polymer and hydrogel. It employed a highly accurate three-dimensional positioning system with pressure-controlled syringe to deposit biopolymer solution. The pressure-activated microsyringe was equipped with fine-bore nozzles of various inner-diameters. This process allowed that inner and outer shapes could be controlled arbitrarily when it was applied to a surgical region with arbitrary shapes. In order to fulfill the properties of the ideal barriers f3r preventing postoperative adhesion, we adopted the pre-mentioned method combined with surface modification with the hydrogel coating by which anti-adhesion property was improved.
Recognition of parallel structure at early stage of sentence parsing can reduce the complexity of parsing. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised language-independent probabilistic model for recongition of parallel noun structures. The proposed model is based on the idea of swapping constituents, which replies the properties of symmetry (two or more identical constituents are repeated) and of reversibility (the order of constituents is inter-changeable) in parallel structures. The non-symmetric patterns that cannot be captured by the general symmetry rule are resolved additionally by the modifier information. In particular this paper shows how the proposed model is applied to recognize Korean parallel noun phrases connected by "wa/kwa" particle. Our model is compared with other models including supervised models and performs better on recongition of parallel noun phrases.
Relation extraction plays a role in for the process of transforming a sentence into a form of knowledge base. In this paper, we focus on predicates in a sentence and aim to identify the relevant knowledge base properties required to elucidate the relationship between entities, which enables a computer to understand the meaning of a sentence more clearly. Distant Supervision is a well-known approach for relation extraction, and it performs lexicalization tasks for knowledge base properties by generating a large amount of labeled data automatically. In other words, the predicate in a sentence will be linked or mapped to the possible properties which are defined by some ontologies in the knowledge base. This lexical and ontological linking of information provides us with a way of generating structured information and a basis for enrichment of the knowledge base.
The Semantic Web has the objective of developing universal media in which machine-processable semantic information can be represented and shared, and it is therefore important to distribute ontologies that represent this kind of semantic information to the Web and make them available to multiple parties. However, the current ontology authoring tools are not operating on the Web, which makes it difficult to distribute ontologies directly to the Web and to create and edit them collaboratively with other people. This paper proposes a framework that facilitates the ontology construction and sharing, realizing easy distribution of ontologies to the Web. Wiki is one of the frameworks for collaborative construction and sharing of knowledge on the Web, and Wiki contents consist of natural language texts and simple markup language for visualization. For better collaboration in creating and sharing ontologies, this paper suggests the Semantic Wiki that embodies the Semantic Web features to the existing Wiki system. The Semantic Wiki framework facilitates the collaboration in ontology co-authoring and sharing for people, and at the same time, makes it possible for the agent software to easily manage the ontology information. Eventually, the Semantic Wiki system accomplishes various tasks including the semantic view, the semantic navigation, and the semantic query.
This study was to investigate effects of instruction using the history of science on elementary school students' science learning motivation. Subjects were 48 students of two groups in the 5th Grade in Bucheon City. A Experimental group of 24 was instructed 20 lessons in Unit 1~7 using the history of science for a 11-week period. In this study, the instructional contents were selected by stories about scientists, discoveries or anecdotes about natural phenomena and related learning topics in national science curriculum. And they are presented by writings with pictures, cartoons, PPT materials and a script. Students play various learning activities such as exchanging opinions after reading instructional content, making a book or a newspaper, playing in a drama and representing by picture. A control group of 24 was instructed by traditional teaching methods in same period. To compare difference of instruction effects of the two groups, the score of pre-test and post-test were both estimated by t-test. The results of the study were as follows. Students of experimental group showed statistically a more significant increase in the science learning motivation than control group students (p<.05). Each of attention (A), relevance (R), satisfaction (S) sub-elements of learning motivation were higher in the experimental group and it was showed the instruction using the history of science was effective in improving of science learning motivation.
Inositol and phytic acic extracted from rice bran were investigated for applying cosmetics. Skin lotions containing 0∼3.0wt% inositol and 0∼1.5wt% phytic acid were applied respectively, to the arm skins of 45 Asian women 20'-40's for 7 weeks. Improvement on moisture was evaluated. In addition, improvements on sebum, elasticity, and wrinkle were examined after applying placebo, Inositol and phytic acid-containing skin lotions for face, respectively. For 1.0 wt% inositol resulted in 19% increase of moisture. The wrinkle reduction and elasticity improved 12.4% and 17.0% on average, respectively. Applying 0.5wt% phytic acid resulted in 71.6% increase the moisture. Improvements on wrinkle and elasticity were 15.9% and 21.9% respectively. Applying inositol or phytic acid regardless of dry or oily, resulted in sebum value recovery to that of the normal skin after 2- 4 weeks. Inositol is inferior to phytic acid in improvenients of the skin, and phytic acid is not suitable to sensitive skin. So 0-0.5wt% of phytic acid were added to 1.0wt% inositol and similar experiments were carried out. In case of added 0.1wt% phytic acid, moisture increased 63.8% approximately. Improvements on elasticity and reduction on wrinkle were 17.2% and 17.4%, respectively. Both skin types were turned to normal skin type after 2 weeks. It could improve the skin condition when used inositol added phytic acid. The optimized concentration of phytic acid was 0.10wt% with 1.0wt% of inositol for synergic effect.
In this paper we present a novel color image segmentation algorithm based on a Gaussian Mixture Model(GMM). It is introduced a Deterministic Annealing Expectation Maximization(DAEM) algorithm which is developed using the principle of maximum entropy to overcome the local maxima problem associated with the standard EM algorithm. In our approach, the GMM is used to represent the multi-colored objects statistically and its parameters are estimated by DAEM algorithm. We also develop the automatic determination method of the number of components in Gaussian mixtures models. The segmentation of image is based on the maximum posterior probability distribution which is calculated by using the GMM. The experimental results show that the proposed DAEM can estimate the parameters more accurately than the standard EM and the determination method of the number of mixture models is very efficient. When tested on two natural images, the proposed algorithm performs much better than the traditional algorithm in segmenting the image fields.
Text Generation is a process of generating comprehensible texts in human languages from some underlying non-linguistic representation of information. Among several sub-processes for text generation to generate coherent texts, this paper concerns referring expression generation which produces different types of expressions to refer to previously-mentioned things in a discourse. Specifically, we focus on pronominalization by zero pronouns which frequently occur in Korean. To build a generation model of referring expressions for Korean, several features are identified based on grammatical information and cost-based centering model, which are applied to various machine learning techniques. We demonstrate that our proposed features are well defined to explain pronominalization, especially pronominalization by zero pronouns in Korean, through 95 texts from three genres - Descriptive texts, News, and Short Aesop's Fables. We also show that our model significantly outperforms previous ones with a 99.9% confidence level by a T-test.
In this paper, we propose an integrated indexing method with compound noun segmentation and noun phrase synthesis. Statistical information is used in the compound noun segmentation and natural language processing techniques are carefully utilized in the noun phrase synthesis. Firstly, we choose index terms from simple words through morphological analysis and part-of-speech tagging results. Secondly, noun phrases are automatically synthesized from the syntactic analysis results. If syntactic analysis fails, only morphological analysis and tagging results are applied. Thirdly, we select compound nouns from the tagging results and then segment and re-synthesize them using statistical information. In this way, segmented and synthesized terms are used together as index terms to supplement the single terms. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed integrated indexing method for Korean compound noun processing using KTSET2.0 and KRIST SET which are a standard test collection for Korean information retrieval.
