  • In this study, the low temperature toughness was evaluated by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedures for A15083-O aluminum alloy used in the LNG carrying and storage tank. The specimens were GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welded with four different mixing shield gas ratios (Ar100%+He0%, Ar67%+He33%, Ar50%, and Ar33%+He67%), and tested at four different temperatures(+25, -30, -85, and $-196^{\circ}C$) in order to investigate the influence of the mixing shielding gas ratio and the low temperature. The specimens were divided into base metal, weld metal, fusion line, and HAZ specimen according to the notch position. From experiment the maximum load and displacement were shown the highest and He lowest at $-196^{\circ}C$ than the other test temperatures. The absorption energy of weld metal notched specimens was not nearly depends on test temperature and mixing shield gas ratio because the casting structure was formed in weld metal zone by melting welding wire. On the other hand, the others specimens was shown that the lower temperature, the higher absorption energy slightly up to $-85^{\circ}C$ but the energy was decreased so mush at $-196^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to successfully meet the environmental and recycling problems, natural polymer and their derivatives are recognized as a promising biodegradable material. In this study, the biodegradable composites of cellulose diacetate and starch were prepared, and their physical and thermal properties were investigated. For the melting processing, triacetine was added as a plasticizer into the composites. The processability of cellulose diacetate was further enhanced by increasing the amount of starch in the composites. The tensile stress and Young's modulus were decreased and elongation was increased with increasing the amount of starch in them. A $T_g$ value was decreased with increasing the amount of starch in the composites. Also, the morphology of the composites were observed with the SEM.

  • Experimental studies on heat transfer and solidification of the molten metal pool with overlying coolant with boiling were performed The simulant molten pool material is tin (Sn) with the melting temperature of 232$^{\circ}C$. Demineralized water and R113 are used as the working coolant. This work examines the crust formation and the heat transfer characteristics of the molten metal pool immersed in the boiling coolant. The Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number in the molten metal Pool region of this study are compared between the water coolant case and the R113 coolant case. The experimental results or the water coolant are higher than those for R113. Also, the empirical relationship of the Nusselt number and the Rayleigh number is compared with the literature correlations measure from mercury. The present experimental results are higher than the literature correlations. It is believed that this discrepancy is caused by the effect of heat loss to the environment on the natural convection heat transfer in the molten pool.

  • Heat transfer characteristics of heat storing processes in paraffin-filled horizontal circular cylinder is studied. The unmelted solid paraffin is allowed to fall on the bottom wall under gravity. In the upper liquid phase, natural convection is considered to take place while in the lower liquid film between the solid paraffin and the wall conduction is thought to take place instead. Experimental analyses are also carried out. The amount of the latent heat stored is obtained by recording the time wisely changing side area of the solid paraffin photographically. The mass of paraffin melted in the upper section is obtained by substracting the amount of melted mass in the lower section from the total mass melted and therefrom variation of heat transfer rate in each section is studied.

  • Interests in the Polar Regions have been growing due to various factors such as depletion of natural resources and advanced resource development technologies, accelerated rate of polar ice melting as a result of global warming, etc. In particular, demand for the workforce related to vessel passage using the Northern Sea Route and polar studies is still expanding. The International Maritime Organization adopted the Polar Code in 2015 for the safety of ship operation in polar waters and it will enter into force from 2017. But education and training section in the code has been prescribed only for the safe navigation in the ice covered waters intended for navigational offices. There is no basic safety training requirement that applies commonly for all personnel exposed to the risk of the polar regions and the relevant study or discussion has not been made so far. Therefore, this study provides basic data for developing safety training courses for crew and other personnel by analyzing relevant regulations on polar safety training and the contents of relevant safety training in offshore industry required by the costal states adjacent to arctic ocean.

  • Each year, about four million tons of steel slag, a by-product produced during the manufacture of steel by refining pig iron in the converter furnace, is generated. It is difficult to recycle this steel slag as aggregate for concrete because the reaction with water and free-CaO in steel slag results in a volume expansion that leads to cracking. However, the steel slag used in this study is atomized using an air-jet method, which rapidly changes the melting substance at high temperature into a solid at a room temperature and prevents free-CaO from being generated in steel slag. This rapidly-cooled steel slag has a spherical shape and is even heavier than natural aggregate, making it suitable for the aggregate of radiation shielding concrete. This study deals with the radiation shielding property of concrete that uses the rapidly-cooled steel slag from the oxidizing process in the converter furnace as fine aggregate. It was shown that the radiation shielding performance of concrete mixed with rapidly-cooled steel slag is even more superior than that of ordinary concrete.

  • The thermal properties of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) modified by 5-sulfoisophthalic acid sodium salt(SIAS) were studied. The glass transition temperature was increased, and the melting temperature and the crystallization rate were decreased as the content of SIAS unit was increased. The decrease of crystallization rate is thought to be due to the polar, bulky sulfonic acid sodium salt group which greatly retards the crystallization on to the growing crystal surface of the diffused polymer chain. The crystallization mechanism of copolyester is dependent on the content of SIAS unit and the three dimensional growth of crystal is hindered by the added SIAS unit.

  • The most rapid Real-time PCR based detection method for Avian influenza A virus (AIV) subtype H5N1 was developed. The target DNA sequence in this study was deduced from H5N1 subtype-specific 387 bp partial gene of hemagglutinin, and was synthesized by using PCR-based gene synthesis on the ground of safety. Real-Time PCR was performed by $GenSpector^{TM}$ using microchip-based, total $1{\mu}l$ of reaction mixture with extremely short time in each steps in PCR. The detection including PCR-amplication and analysis of melting temperature was totally completed within 13 min. The H5N1-specific 189 bp PCR product was correctly amplified until 2.4 molecules of hemagglutinin gene as minimum of templates. This kind of PCR was designated as Quick Real-Time PCR in this study and it could be applied to detect not only AIV H5N1, but also other pathogens using PCR-based detection.

  • For this study, we designed and produced mulberry low-fat ice cream supplemented with synbiotics (MLF-ISS). The sensory characteristics and physical, chemical, and microbiological qualities of MLF-ISS were then determined. Mulberry juice inoculated with or without probiotic (Lactobacillus plantarum TISTR 926 and Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745) was also tested at 37℃ for 24 h to determine probiotic growth rate, pH, total anthocyanin content (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant activity (AA). Only the TAC of mulberry juice inoculated with S. boulardii CNCM I-745 increased considerably (p < 0.05) among these parameters. MLF-ISS was produced with varied mulberry fruit concentrations (0, 10, 20, 30, or 40%) (w/w). The MLF-ISS prepared with 30% mulberry fruit (w/w) (30-MLF-ISS) had a higher score in appearance, color, and sweetness (p < 0.05) when sensory qualities were measured using the 9-point hedonic scale method. In the CIE lab system (L*, a*, b*), the color values of 30-MLF-ISS were 27.80 ± 0.26, 12.99 ± 0.59, and 1.43 ± 0.05, respectively. The 30-MLF-ISS was also subjected to a proximate analysis. The melting rate of 30-MLF-ISS was 0.29 ± 0.03 g/min and the time it took for the first drop to fall was 37.00 ± 7.00 min. TAC, TPC, and AA of 30-MLF-ISS were observed to alter significantly (p < 0.05) during varied intervals of storage at - 18℃ (0, 30, and 60 days). The viability of probiotics in 30-MLF-ISS slightly decreased after storage at -18℃ for 8 weeks, but remained about 6 log CFU/g. During storage at -18℃ for 0 and 120 days, no pathogenic bacteria were detected in 30-MLF-ISS. These findings show that 30-MLF-ISS has nutritional and functional value, is free of foodborne pathogenic bacteria, is safe for consumers' health, and is suitable for application in the ice cream and related food industries.

  • In order to improve the dimensional stability and durability of wood, this study attempted to impregnate bismuth (Bi) - tin (Sn) alloy metal with low melting temperature into solid woods of three species such as radiata pine, red oak and white oak, and investigated to determine an optimum condition of manufacturing the metal alloy-wood composites with natural wood grains. These Bi-Sn alloys were chosen for this study because they were harmless to human and melting at low temperatures. The composites resulted in high dimensional stability and low thickness swelling, and also showed much improved performance such as high bending strength, high hardness, high electric conductivity, and high thermal conductivity as floor materials. A proper impregnating condition of all specimens was determined as 10 minutes of the preliminary vacuum time, and $185^{\circ}C$ of the heating temperature. The proper processing condition for radiata pine wood was 2.5 minutes of the pressuring time at the pressure of $10kgf/cm^2$. For red oak wood, 10 minutes of the pressuring time at the pressure of $30kgf/cm^2$ were the proper condition. The proper manufacture conditions for white oak wood was determined as 10 minutes of the pressuring time at the pressure of $50kgf/cm^2$.
