  • In this paper, natural convection around the ambient evaporator was numerically studied using commercial computational fluid dynamics software. From the simulations, temperature and velocity fields around the evaporator were found as a function of evaporator size and liquefied gas flow rate. The heat transfer coefficient at the external surface of the evaporator was also calculated from the simulation results. In order to give the heat transfer coefficient for various conditions, correlation between Rayleigh number and Nusselt number was proposed.

  • A combined Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin method (SUPG) and segregated finite element algorithm for solving conjugate heat transfer problems where heat conduction in a solid is coupled with heat convection in viscous fluid flow is presented. The Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin method is used for the analysis of viscous thermal flow in the fluid region, while the analysis of heat conduction in solid region is performed by the Galerkin method. The method uses the three-node triangular element with equal-order interpolation functions for all the variables of the velocity components, the pressure and the temperature. The main advantage of the presented method is to consistently couple heat transfer along the fluid-solid interface. Four test cases, which are the conjugate Couette flow problem in parallel plate channel, the counter-flow in heat exchanger, the conjugate natural convection in a square cavity with a conducting wall, and the conjugate natural convection and conduction from heated cylinder in square cavity, are selected to evaluate efficiency of the presented method.

  • The effects of top and bottom lids on the natural convection heat transfer phenomena inside vertical cylinders were investigated experimentally for $Ra_{Lw}$ from $9.26{\times}10^9$ to $7.74{\times}10^{12}$. Using the concept of analogy between heat and mass transfer, a cupric acid-copper sulfate electroplating system was employed as mass transfer experiments replacing heat transfer experiments. The natural convection heat transfer of both-open cylinders in laminar and turbulent flows was in good agreement with the existing heat transfer correlations developed for vertical plates. The effects of top and bottom lids on the heat transfer rates were very similar to the studies of Krysa et al. and Sedahmed et al. and Chung et al. With the copper lids, the bottom-closed cavity showed the highest heat transfer rates and then followed both-closed, top-closed, both-open ones in both laminar and turbulent flows. However with the acryl lids, the similar trends were observed except that the heat transfer rates for both-open were higher than top-closed one. The use of the copper lids increased the heat transfer rates compared to the acryl lids due to the hydrodynamic interaction of the flows developed for the different heated faces. This study extended the ranges of flow conditions of the existing literatures and proposed the empirical correlations.

  • An incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) method based on the incremental pressure projection method is developed in this study. The Rayleigh-B$\acute{e}$nard convection in a square enclosure is used as a validation case and the results obtained by the proposed ISPH model are compared to the benchmark solutions. The comparison shows that the established ISPH method has a good performance in terms of accuracy. Subsequently, the proposed ISPH method is employed to simulate natural convection from a heated cylinder in a square enclosure. It shows that the predictions obtained by the ISPH method are in good agreements with the results obtained by previous studies using alternative numerical methods. A rotating and heated cylinder is also considered to study the effect of the rotation on the heat transfer process in the enclosure space. The numerical results show that for a square enclosure at, the addition of kinetic energy in the form of rotation does not enhance the heat transfer process. The method is also applied to simulate forced convection from a circular cylinder in an unbounded uniform flow. In terms of results, it turns out that the proposed ISPH model is capable to simulate heat transfer problems with the complex and moving boundaries.

  • Compared with Newtonial fluids, magnetic fluids have effects on magnetic force. In this study, the purpose is to research the heat transfer characteristic of magnetic fluids which have metalic and fluid characteristics as the external pipe is being cooled and internal pipe is heated. This study found the experimental results from the study of the variety of natural convection for magnetic fluids and the characteristics of the heat transfer by using numerical analysis according to the strength and direction of the magnetic fields from being imposed from the outside. Natural convection of magnetic fluids was controlled by the impressed magnetic fields, and the result of mean nusselt number was calculated. If the impressed magnetic field is in the direction of gravity or the strength of impressed magnetic field is more than -14 mT in the opposite direction, the heat transfer is more than that without the impressed magnetic field. If the strength of impressed magnetic field is less than -14 mT in the opposite direction, it is smaller than that without the impressed magnetic field. Especially, when the strength of the magnetic field is -14 mT, the heat transfer was at the minimum.

  • This study investigated the natural convection and radiation in a rectangular enclosure with ceiling vent experimentally and numerically. A heat source is located on the center of the bottom surface. The analysis was peformed a pure convection and is combination of natural convection and radiation. The shape of the considered two dimensional model is a square whose center of ceiling($30\%$) is opened. The numerical simulations are carried out for the pure natural convection case and the combined heat transfer case by using the SIMPLE algorithm. For the turbulent flow, Reynolds stresses are closed by the standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model and the wall function is used to determine the wall boundary conditions. The experiment was performed on the same geometrical shape as the computations. The radiative heat transfer is analized by the S-N discrete ordinates method. The results of pure natural convection are compared with those of combined heat transfer by the velocity vectors, stream lines, isothermal lines. The results obtained are as follows 1. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation through the shape of stream lines, isothermal lines are similar to each other. 2. The temperature fields obtained by numerical method are compared to those obtained by experimental one, and it is found that they are showed mean relative error $8.5\%$. 3. Visualization bt smoke is similar to computational results.

  • In the present investigation, experiments on the melting of a phase change material were performed to research heat transfer phenomena generated by means of conduction and natural convection in the vertical tube at inward melting. The phase change material used in the experiments is 99 percent pure n-Docosane paraffin which is measured melting temperature of $42.5^{\circ}C$, latent heat of 37.5 cal/g, heat conductivity of $0.1505W/m^{\circ}C$. Experiments were performed both in the no-subcooling which is initiating it at melting temperature of phase change material, and in the subcooling which means to initiate it under melting temperature of phase change material, in order to compare and investigate the horizontal temperature history, vertical temperature history, ratio of melting and melted mass, figure of the melting front in the vertical tube. In the experimental results, heat transfer from tube wall to phase change material were due to conduction at early stage and due to natural convection with the passage of time, and then occurred melting downward from surface by volumetric expansion. Natural convection affects temperature distribution in the tube, ratio of melting and melted mass, figure of the melting front and then progress rapidly in case of nosubcooling compared to subcooling.

  • In the present study, the homogeneous model is used to simulate the natural convection heat transfer of the CuO-water nanofluid in a concentric annular enclosure. Simulations have been carried while the Rayleigh number ranges from $10^3$ to $10^6$, solid volume fraction ranges from 0.01 to 0.04 and the radius ratio varies between 0.1 and 0.7. Results are presented in the form of streamlines, isotherm patterns and averaged Nusselt numbers for different values of solid volume fraction, radius ratio of the annulus and Rayleigh numbers. The results show that by decreasing the radius ratio and/or increasing the Rayleigh number, the averaged Nusselt number increases. Also the heat transfer rate increases as increased solid volume fractions.

  • Natural convection heat transfer phenomena on a horizontal cylinder have been studied experimentally in order to investigate the applicability of analogy experimental methodology using a copper electroplating system and to visualize the local heat transfer rates depending on the angular position and the diameter of the horizontal cylinder. In the copper electroplating system, the copper ion produced at the anode moves by convection and diffusion to the cathode and reduces at the cathode, representing the heat transfer. By using aluminum cathode with a distinguishable color, the amount of copper plated could visualize the amount of heat transferred depending on the angular position of the cylinder. The diameter of the cylinder is varied from 0.01m to 0.15m, which correspond to Rayleigh numbers in the range of $1.73{\times}10^7$ to $5.69{\times}10^{11}$. The test results are in good agreement with existing heat transfer correlations.
