Water mist fire suppression systems which use relatively small droplets of water with high injection pressure are increasingly being used in wider applications because of its greater efficiency, low flooding damage and low toxicity. However, the performance of the system significantly relies on the water mist characteristics and it requires better understanding of fire suppression mechanism of water mist. In the present study, computational fluid dynamics simulations were carried out to investigate cooling performance of water mist in heated chamber. The gas phase was prepared with natural convection heat transfer model for incompressible ideal case and then the effects of water mist injection characteristics on cooling capabilities were investigated upon the basis of the pre-determined temperature field. For the simulation of water mist behavior, Lagrangian discrete phase model was employed by using a commercial code, FLUENT. Smaller droplet sizes, greater injection angles and higher flow rates provided relatively higher cooling performance.

A numerical analysis has been conducted to investigate a modified floating-zone crystal growth process in which most of the melt surface is covered with a heated ring. The crystal rod is not only pulled downward but rotated around its axisymmetric line during crystal growth process in order to produce the flat interface of crystal growth and the single crystal growth of NaNO3 is considered in 6mm diameter. The present study is made from a full-equation-based analysis considering a pulling velocity in all of solid and liquid domains and both of solid-liquid interfaces are tracked simultaneously with a governing equation in each domain. Numerical results are mainly presented for the comparison of the surface shape of rotational crystal rod with that of no-rotational crystal rod and the effects of revolution speeds of the crystal rod. Results show that the rotation of crystal rod produces more its flat surface. In addition, the shape of crystal growth near the centerline is more concaved with the increase in the revolution speed of crystal rod. The flow pattern and temperature distribution is analyzed and presented in each case. As the pulling velocity of crystal rod is increasing, the free surface of the melt below the heated ring is enlarged due to the crystal interface migrating downward.
This paper shows the temperature rise of the high voltage GIS bus bar. The temperature rise in GIS bus bar is due to Joule's losses in the conductor and the induced eddy current in the tank. The power losses of a bus bar calculated from the magnetic field analysis are used as the input data for the thermal analysis to predict the temperature. The required analysis is a couple-field Multiphysics that accounts for the interactions between three-dimensional AC harmonic magnetic and fluid fields. The heat transfer calculation using the fluid analysis is done by considering the natural convection and the radiation from the tank to the atmosphere. Consequently, because temperature distributions by couple-field Multiphysics (coupled magnetic-fluid) have good agreement with results of temperature rise test, the proposed couple-field Multiphysics technique is likely to be used in a conduction design of the single-pole and three pole-encapsulated bus bar in CIS..

Sokkuram grotto, a UNESCO cultural heritage in Kyongju Korea, was originally covered with crushed rocks over its dome with ventilating holes. The grotto was perfectly preserved for more than 12 centuries until the upper structure was replaced with a concrete dome in the early 20th century to protect from total collapse. Since then, heavy dew formed on the granite surface to seriously damage the sculptures until it was further remodeled with air-conditioning facilities in the 60s. It is considered that the original upper porous structure had a dehumidifying capability. This research is made to unveil the dehumidifying mechanism of the rock layer during the rainy season in that area. A rock layer and a concrete layer are tested in a temperature/humidity-controlled room. No dew formation is observed for the two specimen for continued sunny days or continued rainy days. However, heavy dew formed on the concrete surface for a sunny day after long rainy days. It is thought that the sun evaporates water on the ground and dew is formed at the surface as the highly humid air touches the yet cold concrete. On the contrary, no dew formation is observed for the rock layer at any time. Even in the above worst situation, air flows downward through the cool rock layer and moisture is removed before reaching inside. Temperature measurement, flow visualization, observation of dew formation and measurement of air velocity are made to verify the mechanisms.

Dynamic characteristics of thermally-forced stratification process in a square enclosure with a linear temperature profile at the side walls have been investigated through flow visualization experiment and numerical analysis. The experiment was performed on air with the Rayleigh numbers of order $10^5$. A particle tracer method is used for the flow visualization and to obtain a sudden linear temperature profile at the side walls copper blocks which already have a linear temperature profile are come into contact with the thin copper plates of the test section. Immediately a meridional circulation is developed and heat transfer takes place from the wall to the interior region by circulation of fluid and finally a thermal stratification is achieved. In the numerical study, QUICK scheme for convective terms, SIMPLE algorithm for pressure correction, and the implicit method for the time marching are adopted for the integration of conservation equations. Comparison of flow visualization and numerical results shows that the developing flow patterns are very similar in dynamic nature even though there is a time lag due to the inevitable time delay in setting up a linear temperature profile. For high Rayleigh numbers, the oscillatory motion is likely to take place and stratified region is extended. However, initial temperature adjustment process is much slower than that for low Rayleigh numbers.
Latent heat storage system using micro-encapsuled phase change material is effective method for floor heating of house and building. The temperature profile in capsule block and flow rate of hot water are important parameters for the development of heat storage system. In the present study, a mathematical model based on 3-D, non-steady state, Navier-Stokes equations, scalar conservation equations and turbulence model ($\kappa$-$\varepsilon$), is used to predict the temperature profiles in capsule and the velocity vectors in hot water pipe. The multi-block grids and fine grids embedding are used to join the circle in hot water pipe and square in capsule block. The phase change process of the capsule is quite complex not only because the size of phase change material is very small, but also because phase change material is mixed with the cement to form thermal storage block. In calculation, it's assumed that the phenomena of phase change is limited only the thermal properties of phase change material and the change of boundary is not happened in capsule. The purpose of this study is to calculate the temperature profiles in capsule block and velocity vectors in hot water pipe using the numerical calculation. Two kinds of thermal boundary condition were considered, the first (case 1) is the adiabatic condition for the both outside surfaces of the wall, the second (case 2) is the case in which one surface is natural convection with atmosphere and another surface is adaibatic. Calculation results are shown that the temperature profile in capsule block for case 1 is higher than that for case 2 due to less heat loss in adaibatic surface. Specially, in the domain of near Y=0, the difference of temperature is greater in case 1 than in case 2. The detailed experimental data of capsule block on the temperature profile and the thermal properties such as specific heat and coefficient of heat transfer with the various temperature are required to predict more exact phenomena of heat transfer.
A cylindrical solar energy focusing collector constructed using aluminum-laminated film plastered on the acrylic plate and examined its performances under the Korean local weather conditions. The reflector surface of this collector· evidenced the reflectivity of 66.1%,which was satisfactory value that could be applicable to the solar collector for its low price and at·availability. Collector efficiency measured at the heat exchanger fluid in absorber-copper pipe black colored was 73% and the resulting natural convection of the heat transfer media (water) was recorded up to 2.82 cm/sec. The overall efficiency of the solar heater in operation was 28.6% and it was correlated with the solar energy input and the temperature elevation difference gained.

In case that the maximum temperature of any surface readily accessible during transport of a spent nuclear fuel (SNF) transport cask exceeds $85^{\circ}C$ in the absence of insolation under the ambient temperature of $38^{\circ}C$, personnel barriers or transport hood shall be used to prevent people from casual contact with the transport cask surface. Usually the air temperature within the hood and the hood surface temperature are calculated and further utilized as boundary conditions(free stream temperature and external radiation temperature) for thermal evaluation under normal conditions of transport. In this study, these temperatures are derived using the analytical method based on the heat transfer mechanism around the transport cask under transport hood assuming the thermal equilibrium. By comparing the analytical solutions with the results from the detailed calculations with CFD-computer-code FLUENT 12.1 it is verified that the analytical method is still efficient tool to estimate the temperatures and these temperatures can be further used as boundary conditions for thermal evaluation under normal conditions of transport.
In natural convection flows, the fluid velocities are highly dependent on the thermal field and property variations can have a strong effect on both the flow and thermal fields. To examine the effect of property variations, at first, numerical analyses covering wide range of the Prandtl number under the same Rayleigh numbers have been carried out. Next, we have modeled the viscosity and thermal conductivity as parabolic functions of temperature and a comprehensive set of numerical solutions have been obtained to understand the effect. The Prandtl number dependence of Nusselt number is fairly strong even though the effect is still weak compared to the Rayleigh number dependence. When thermophysical properties are dependent on temperature, the flow field showed a fairly weak variation except near boundaries, whereas the temperature field is strongly affected, especially by the temperature dependent thermal conductivity.
Effects of various drying conditions of agar gel on the physico-chemical properties of dried agar were investigated. For drying of the agar gel$(1.0{\times}1.0{\times}34.0cm)$ by means of sun drying, simple solar drying, hot-air drying ($30^{\circ}C$, control, natural convection), hot-air drying ($30^{\circ}C$, pretreatment, natural convection) and freeze drying, it took 96, 75, 67, 50 and 21 hours, respectively. The gel strengths of dried agar gel prepared by sun drying, solar drying, freeze drying and spray drying were320, 370, 270 and $360g/cm^2$, respectively and that of hot air-dried agar gel was influenced by drying temperature, pretreatment an mode of heat transfer. The gel strength, the gelation temperature and other quality index of spray-dried agar were not inferior to those of sun-dried agar, but it was not expected to be economical because of it recovery rate. In case of hot air drying, the gel strength value of agar increased as the drying rate increased. No significant differences among various products were noted in the gelation temperature, the melting temperature, the ash and $SO_3$ content.
