This study examined the numerical analysis results with respect to the thermal behavior of a natural convection cooled pin-fin heat sink. The heat sink consisted of pin fins integrated with plate fins. The heat sinks were designed with two different types to fit the limited internal space. The two types of heat sinks designed were analyzed using the ANSYS software package, and the numerical analysis results were compared with the cooling performance of the two types of heat sinks. The results of the simulation were analyzed according to the temperature distribution and air flow characteristics, heat flux etc. This study examined the correlation of the cooling performance with the heat sink internal structure and fin shape. FEM (Finite Element Method) confirmed the cooling performance of heat sink type A under natural convection conditions as the best results. The results of the numerical simulation showed that the heat sink type A shape showed an approximately 70 percent better heat transfer rate with natural convection than that of type B.
Most of the previous studies on natural convection were based on the numerical analysis, and some experimental studies considered the classic case of thermal convection. In this study, an adiabatic square body was located at the center of an enclosure between the bottom hot and top cold walls. And the measurement of the detailed temperature fields was conducted by the method of two-color Laser Induced Fluorescence using a Nd:Yag laser. As a result, heat transfer characteristics of natural convection with an adiabatic body was estimated as a function of time over a range of Rayleigh numbers.

Microfin arrays with fin heights of 100 ${\mu}$m and 200 ${\mu}$m and six different spacings from 30 ${\mu}m$to 360 ${\mu}m$ are fabricated using the DRIE process. Natural convective heat transfer around the microfin arrays on both vertical and horizontal surfaces is experimentally examined. It turns out that the orientation effect of microfin arrays is negligible compared with macrofin arrays. The obtained heat transfer coefficients are compared with the existing heat transfer correlation for the macrofin arrays. It is concluded that the existing macrocorrelation is no longer valid for the microfin arrays. Relevant empirical correlations for microfin arrays on the vertical and horizontal surfaces are presented based on the present experimental data.

Laminar natural convective heat transfer within a two-dimensional rectangular enclosure with horizontal conducting walls and partitions was investigated by numerical analysis and experiment. The enclosure consists of two isothermal vertical walls and two adiabatic horizontal walls. This combined heat transfer problem of conduction and natural convection was solved using finite difference method with SIMPLE algorithm, and temperature distribu-tions in the air filled enclosure was obtained using Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Good agree-ment was obtained between the predicted and measured results. The effect of geometric parameters and thermal properties on heat transfer was studied far Grashof numbers in range, $1\times10^4\;{\leqslant}\;G^r\;{\leqslant}\;6.4\times10^5.$ It was found that both velocity and temperature fields were in-fluenced significantly by thermal conductivity of the conducting walls and the partitions, and by geometry of partitions.
This study examined the natural convection heat flow characteristics of the melting process of PCM (palm oil) inside a liquid flexitank(bag) for a cargo container. A film heating element was installed on the bottom of the container, and numerical analysis was performed under heat flux conditions of 1,000 to 4,000 W/m2. As a result, the melt interface of the PCM rises to a nearly horizontal state over time. In the initial stage, conduction heat transfer dominates, but gradually waves at the cell flow and melt interfaces are formed due to natural convection heat transfer. As melting progresses, the Ra number increases parabolically, and the Nu number increases linearly and has a constant value. The Nu number rises slowly under low heat flux conditions, whereas under high heat flux conditions, the Nu number rises rapidly. As the heat flux increases, the internal temperature oscillation of the liquid phase after melting increases. However, under high heat flux conditions, excess heat exceeding the latent heat is generated, and the temperature of the molten liquid is raised, so the increase in melting rate decreases. Therefore, the appropriate heating element specification applied to a 20-ton palm oil container is 2,000 W/m2.

The air-cooled passive decay heat removal system (APDHR) was proposed to provide the ultimate heat sink for non-LOCA accidents. The APDHR is a modified one of Passive Auxiliary Feed-water system (PAFS) installed in APR+. The PAFS has a heat exchanger in the Passive Condensate Cooling Tank (PCCT) and can remove decay heat for 8 h. After that, the heat transfer rate through the PAFS drastically decreases because the heat transfer condition changes from water to air. The APDHR with a vertical heat exchanger in PCCT will be able to remove the decay heat by air if it has sufficient natural convection in PCCT. We conducted the thermal-hydraulic simulation by the MARS code to investigate the behavior of the APR + selected as a reference plant for the simulation. The simulation contains two phases based on water depletion: the early phase and the late phase. In the early phase, the volume of water in PCCT was determined to avoid the water depletion in three days after shutdown. In the late phase, when the number of the HXs is greater than 4089 per PCCT, the MARS simulation confirmed the long-term cooling by air is possible under extended Station Blackout (SBO).
The boiler structure is determined by combustion characteristics and construction costs in the combustion chamber of a large commercial boiler. The heat transfer in boiler is composed of the radiation and the convection. The convective heat transfer has happened to back-pass heating surface. The combustion gas sequentially passes through the reheater tube, 1st economizer tube, and 2nd economizer tube. In case of being lowered in boiler height, we have to install additional tube bundle in back-pass heating surface for increasing the heat transfer of boiler, which causes the noise and vibration from combustion gas. When the combustion gas passes through the back-pass tube bundle in specified load of commercial boiler, this paper analyzes the acoustic characteristics between vortex-shedding frequency and natural frequency in tube bundle cavity. The case study reduce the resonance by changing natural frequency characteristics of tube-bundle cavity using a way to install ant-noise baffle in the direction of combustion gas flow.

The natural convective nanofluid flow and heat transfer inside a square enclosure with a center heater in the presence of magnetic field has been studied numerically. The vertical walls of the enclosure are cold and the top wall is adiabatic while the bottom wall is considered with constant heat source. The governing differential equations are solved by using a finite volume method based on SIMPLE algorithm. The parametric study is performed to analyze the effect of different lengths of center heater, Hartmann numbers and Rayleigh numbers. The heater effectiveness and temperature distribution are examined. The effect of all pertinent parameters on streamlines, isotherms, velocity profiles and average Nusselt numbers are presented. It is found that heat transfer increases with the increase of heater length, whereas it decreases with the increase of magnetic field effect. Furthermore, it is found that the value of Nusselt number depends strongly upon the Hartmann number for the increasing values of Rayleigh number.

Turbulent natural convective flow and heat transfer in a square enclosure with horizontal partition are investigated numerically. The enclosure is composed of a lower hot and a upper cold horizontal walls and adiabatic vertical walls. Partitions carried with the upward, downward, and both control plates are attached perpendicularly to the one of the vertical insulated walls, respectively. The low Reynolds number $k-\varepsilon$ model is adopted to calculate the turbulent thermal convection. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations have been carried out by varying the length of partition, the position of control plates, and the Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height for water(Pr=4.95). When the control plates are attached at the edge of partition, the stability of oscillating flow grows wrose with the increase of Rayleigh number and the partition length. The heat transfer rate has been reducer than that of no control plate due to the restraint of control plates with the increase of Rayleigh number.
