If there is no choice but to be urbanized, we should examine how human interference has had influences on the area to keep the river environment safe and stable. This study is aimed at finding improvement by examining the effect of human interference in Gapcheon river in Daejeon, which is developing fast. Distinctive features of human interference in Gapcheon river are followings. First, middle and upper reaches of Gapcheon river are being maintained and restored focusing on flood control but are scheduled to develop city and channel. Second, the rear area of middle and lower reaches of Gapcheon river is already developed into an urban district and solidified into artificial stream for leisure activities installing the artificial structure for fun. Third, lower reaches of Gapcheon river are in an unstable condition because of straightening waterway and developing rear area of river. Up to now, geographical features and bio-diversity of Gapcheon river has been ruined by the artificial management of river centered for technical engineering. From now on, followings should be considered for management of urban river. First, it is focused on maintaining eco system by itself than usage for human. Second, natural features of rear area of river should be taken into consideration and should be preserved before developing urban city and hills, back marsh, channel deposit and swamp to directly have an influence on river.

The purpose of this paper is to consider the formation processes and depositional conditions of bars formed at the upper-stream part of Sayeon Dam since Sayeon Dam construction in 1964. Results of analyzing the shape characteristics of bars and their sediment grain size distribution are as follow: Firstly, bars are able to categorized as subaqueous bars (A, B), mid-channel bars(C, D), and tributary side-bars(E). Secondly, the outline of bars has longish along the flow path, and their height lowers more and more going towards downstream. Also the height of bar surface tend to heighten from flow path to mountain slope. However, the near part of A is comparatively higher than its distant part, A is defined as a subaqueous natural levee and back swamp. Thirdly, the average particle size of A and B become smaller toward mountain slope. In transportation style, ratio of suspended load become higher toward mountain slope. Fourthly, sorting is worse to very worse according with lake's random changable water level. Fifthly, bar A and B were formed by vertical sedimentation of sediments according as sediments transported along flow path in the subaqueous conditions were spreaded out of flow path. C and D were formed by bed load as flood level lowered. And E was formed by vertical sedimentation while stream flow stopped in tributary's mouth areas with the water level heightening.

Transport of cyanobacterial toxins (microcystin-LR, -RR, -YR) were assessed from a eutrophic lake, Lake Suwa, through the outflowing river, the Tenryu River, and its irrigation channel branch. Temporal variation of phytoplankton species composition in the river coincided with those of the lake; Microcystis ichthyoblabe dominated from June to July, and M. viridis dominated from August to September. When cyanobacterial bloom occurred, microcystins were continuously detected at the concentration of $0.3{\sim}3.2\;{\mu}g/l$ even at 32 km downstream. The change of the content of three microcystin variants were related both with the total cell density of Microcystis and with the change of Microcystis species composition. When Microcystis ichthyoblabe dominated during July, only microcystin-RR (MC-RR) and -LR (MC-LR) were detected, while when Microcystis viridis dominated between August and October, microcystin-RR,-YR (MC -YR) and -LR were detected. Along 29 km flowing distance (flow time 11 hours) between site 2 and site 5 in the Tenryu River, cyanobacterial density and microcystin concentration were reduced by 73% and 72%, respectively, which is mostly contributed by the dilution effect of tributary waters (61% and 57%, respectively) . In the artificial irrigation channel microcystins and cyanobacterial cells were decreased less than in the natural river. The results indicate that cyanobacterial toxins can be transported far downstream without much removal and give hazards to water usage in downstream of eutrophic lakes with cyanobacterial blooms.
This study aims to suggest the framework of functional assessment on lotic area based on HGM(Hydrogeomorphic) approach targeting Wetland Protected Areas which are in the type of river channel, and to set up the fundamental data as a reference wetland. A total of 10 factors in terms of hydrology, biogeochemistry, plant habitat and animal habitat was analyzed based on the original approach of HGM and each Functional Capacity Index(FCI) of those factors was calculated. As the result of the modified FCI analysis, Damyang riverine wetland which is with artificial river bank had high values in the variables of area ratio of actual vegetation in the foreland, the number of plant per area and the area ratio of Salix spp., and those values were highly reflected on the factors of Nutrient Cycling(947,668.00), Species Richness and Maintain Characteristic Plant Communites(6.39) and Maintain Spatial Structure of Habitat(11.00). The Hanbando wetland which is keeping the natural bank had higher values in the variables of structural scale and species diversity, and the those values were highly reflected on the factors of Energy Dissipation(17,805.16), Subsurface Storage of Water(0.54), Removal of Imported Elements and Compounds(103,052.73), Maintain Characteristic Detrital Biomass(2.31), Maintenance of Interspersion and Connectivity (6.50), Species Diversity of Benthic macro-invertebrates(1.60) and Species Diversity of Vertebrate & Species Number of Other Animals(2.52/ 151.50), compared to the Damyang Riverine Wetland.

In the central nervous system, nitric oxide (NO) is associated with many pathological diseases such as brain ischemia, neurodegeneration and inflammation. The epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major compound of green tea, is recognized as protective substance against neuronal diseases. This study is aimed to investigate the effect of EGCG on NO-induced cell death in PC12 cells. Administration of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, decreased cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner and induced genomic DNA fragmentation with cell shrinkage and chromatin condensation. EGCG diminished the decrement of cell viability and the formation of apoptotic morphologenic changes as well as DNA fragmentation by SNP. EGCG played as an antioxidant that attenuated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by SNP. The cells treated with SNP showed downregulation of Bcl-2, but upregulation of Bax. EGCG ameliorated the altered expression of Bcl-2 and Bax by SNP. The release of cytochrome c from mitochondria into cytosol and expression of voltage -dependent anion channel (VDAC)1, a cytochrome c releasing channel in mitochondria, were increased in SNP-treated cells, whereas were attenuated by EGCG. The enhancement of caspase-9, preceding mitochondria-dependent pathway, caspase-8 and death receptor-dependent pathway, as well as caspase-3 activities were suppressed by EGCG. SNP upragulated Fas and Fas-L, which are death receptor assembly, whereas EGCG ameliorated the expression of Fas enhanced by SNP. These results demonstrated that EGCG has a protective effect against SNP-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells, through scavenging ROS and regulating the mitocondria- and death receptor-mediated signal pathway. The present study suggest that EGCG might be a natural neuroprotective substance.
In this study, RMA2 and RMA4, the 2-D depth-averaged models, were employed to simulate the two-dimensional mixing characteristics of the pollutants in the natural streams. The velocity and depth were first calculated using RMA2, 2-D hydrodynamic model, and then the resulting flow field was inputted to RMA4, 2-D water quality model, to compute the concentration field. RMA models were verified using the velocity and concentration data measured in S-curved meandering channel. The results showed that the RMA2 model simulated well the phenomenon that the maximum velocity line is located at the Inner bank of meandering channel, and the RMA4 model was well adapted to reproduce the general mixing behavior and the separation of tracer clouds. Comparing model simulations with measured data in the field experiments, RMA2 model simulated well general flow field and tendency that the maximum velocity line skewed toward the outer bank which were found in field experiments. The simulations of RMA4 model showed that the center of the tracer cloud tends to follow the path in which the maximum velocity occurs. In this study, the dispersion coefficients are fine-tuned based on the measured coefficients calculated using field concentration data, and the results show reasonable agreement with predictive equations.

Recently, the need for disaster-preventing broadcast has increased gradually to cope with natural disaster like earthquake and tsunami causing enormous losses of both life and property. In disaster-preventing broadcast system, the wake-up signal is used to alert user terminal and switch the current state of channel to the emergency channel, which is for the fast and efficient delivery of emergency information. In this paper, we propose the detection method of wake-up signal for disaster-preventing broadcast systems. The wake-up signals for disaster-preventing broadcast should have a good auto-correlation property in low power and narrow-band conditions that does not affect the existing digital television (DTV) system. The suitability of the m-sequence and complementary code (CC) is analyzed for wake-up signals according to signal to noise ratio. A wake-up signal is proposed by combining the direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) technique and pseudo noise (PN) sequences such as Barker and Walsh-Hadamard codes. By using the proposed method, a higher detecting performance can be achieved by the spreading gain compared to the single long m-sequence and the Golay code.
Micromorphological features of Bhorizon of Honam series were investigated by means of thin sections of natural undisturbed, oriented soil samples. Thin sections show that the B horizons have argillic accumulations. Argillic horizon was developed at the utmost in B21t horizon. Channel, and skew plane cutans were identified in B21t horizon and stress cutans are presented in B24t horizon. Such a continuous oriented argillans related to channels and skew planes decreased with increasing depth.

Purpose : A number of genes and their products are Induced early or late following exposure of cells to ionizing radiation. These radiation-Induced genes have various effects on irradiated cells and tissues. Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) based on PCR was used to Identify the differentially expressed genes by radiation in cervix carcinoma cells. Materials and Methods : Total RNA and poly $(A)^+$ mRNA were Isolated from Irradiated and non-irradiated HeLa cells. Forward- and reverse-subtracted cDNA libraries were constructed using SSH. Eighty-eight clones of each were used to randomly select differentially expressed genes using reverse Northern blotting (dot blot analysis). Northern blotting was used to verify the screened genes. Results : Of the 17t clones, 10 genes in the forward-subtracted library and 9 genes In the reverse-subtracted library were identified as differentially expressed radiation-induced genes by PCR-select differential screening. Three clones from the forward-subtracted library were confirmed by Northern blotting, and showed increased expression in a dose-dependent manner, including a telomerase catalytic subunit and sodium channel-like protein gene, and an ESTs (expressed sequence tags) gene. Conclusion : We Identified differentially expressed radiation-induced genes with low-abundance genes with SSH, but further characterization of theses genes are necessary to clarify the biological functions of them.

Incheon Bridge, 18.4 km long sea-crossing bridge, will be opened to the traffic in October 2009 and this will be the new landmark of the gearing up north-east Asia as well as the largest & longest bridge of Korea. Incheon Bridge is the integrated set of several special featured bridges including a magnificent cable-stayed girder bridge which has a main span of 800 m width to cross the navigation channel in and out of the Port of Incheon. Incheon Bridge is making an epoch of long-span bridge designs thanks to the fully application of the AASHTO LRFD (load & resistance factor design) to both the superstructures and the substructures. A state-of-the-art of the geotechnologies which were applied to the Incheon Bridge construction project is introduced. The most Large-diameter drilled shafts were penetrated into the bedrock to support the colossal superstructures. The bearing capacity and deformational characteristics of the foundations were verified through the world's largest static pile load test. 8 full-scale pilot piles were tested in both offshore site and onshore area prior to the commencement of constructions. Compressible load beyond 30,000 tonf pressed a single 3 m diameter foundation pile by means of bi-directional loading method including the Osterberg cell techniques. Detailed site investigation to characterize the subsurface properties had been carried out. Geotextile tubes, tied sheet pile walls, and trestles were utilized to overcome the very large tidal difference between ebb and flow at the foreshore site. 44 circular-cell type dolphins surround the piers near the navigation channel to protect the bridge against the collision with aberrant vessels. Each dolphin structure consists of the flat sheet piled wall and infilled aggregates to absorb the collision impact. Geo-centrifugal tests were performed to evaluate the behavior of the dolphin in the seabed and to verify the numerical model for the design. Rip-rap embankments on the seabed are expected to prevent the scouring of the foundation. Prefabricated vertical drains, sand compaction piles, deep cement mixings, horizontal natural-fiber drains, and other subsidiary methods were used to improve the soft ground for the site of abutments, toll plazas, and access roads. Light-weight backfill using EPS blocks helps to reduce the earth pressure behind the abutment on the soft ground. Some kinds of reinforced earth like as MSE using geosynthetics were utilized for the ring wall of the abutment. Soil steel bridges made of corrugated steel plates and engineered backfills were constructed for the open-cut tunnel and the culvert. Diverse experiences of advanced designs and constructions from the Incheon Bridge project have been propagated by relevant engineers and it is strongly expected that significant achievements in geotechnical engineering through this project will contribute to the national development of the longspan bridge technologies remarkably.
