  • This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics and mechanism of heavy metals using pellet-type ceramics(ZS ceramics), in which natural zeolite was mixed and calcined with converter slag. The optimal calcination temperature range was measured to be $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$. The calcination time had little effect on the removal of heavy metal in acid wastewater. The adequate dose of ceramics was shown to be 2~5% for removal of heavy metals in acid wastewater. The maximum removal capacity of ZS ceramics for heavy metals were observed to be Al 84.7 mg/g, Cd 37.3 mg/g, Cr 81.7 mg/g, Cu 55.6 mg/g, Fe 57.2 mg/g, Mn 32.1 mg/g, Ni 38.0 mg/g, Pb 71.6 mg/g, Zn 46.3 mg/g. The pH played a pivotal role in the removal of heavy metals by ZS ceramics. The analysis results of mechanism exhibited that the ZS ceramics could act as a multi-functional ceramics for removal of heavy metals in acid wastewater by adsorption, ion-exchange, or precipitation.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HA) is well known as a biocompatible and bioactive material. HA has been practically applied as bone graft materials in a range of medical and dental fields. In this study, two types of dense hydroxyapatite ceramics were prepared from natural bones and synthetic materials. The biocompatibility of HA ceramics for supporting osteoblast cell growth and cytotoxicity using an in vitro MG-63 cell line model were respectively evaluated. Artificial hydroxyapatite shows relative density of 93% with 1-2 ${\mu}m$ after sintering, but a hydroxyapatite compact derived from bovine bone has low sintered density of 85% with a small content of MgO. Irrespective of the starting raw materials, both types of sintered hydroxyapatite displayed similar biocompatibility in the tests. FE-SEM observations showed that most MG-63 cells had a stellar shape and formed an intercellular matrix containing fibers on sintered HA. The cells were well attached and grown over the HA surface, indicating that there was no toxicity.

  • As the prosthetic application of natural mineral substituted for chemical reagent, composites and a glass-ceramics containing hydro-xyapatite isolated from tuna bone were prepared by solid state reaction. On x-ray examinations, the major phases of composites were identified as pseudowollastonite(${\alpha}-CaSiO_3$) and ${\beta}$-tricalcium phosphate($\beta$-TCP) and the phase of a glass-ceramics was observed as $\beta$-TCP and fluoroapatite caused by $CaF_2$ respectively. SEM images depict that the microstructures of grain at the composites were a function of temperature. The measured strength of a glass-ceramics prepared at $900^{\circ}C$ for 4 hr in air was 90 MPa as a 4-point bending method and this value was similar to the cortical bone, as 50~150 MPa but it was lower than its maximum strength.

  • The mineralogical properties of natural zeolite comixed with montmorillonite were investigated by the chemical composition analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. The experimental results on the removal of heavy metal ions by using the natural sample are summerized as follows. The removal of the heavy metal in solution is greatly influenced by the pH. Also, the removal capacity of heavy metal ions by zeolite and montmorillonite have increased in order of $Cu^{2+}>Cd^{2+}>Ni^{2+}$.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of heavy metals and sulfate ion from acid mine drainage by porous zeolite-slag ceramics (ZS ceramics) that was prepared by adding wood flour as pore-foaming agent while calcining the mixtures of natural zeolite and converter slag. The batch test showed that the removal efficiency of heavy metals by pellet-type porous ZS ceramics increased as the particle size of wood flour was decreased and as the weight mixing ratio of wood flour to ZS ceramics was increased. The optimal particle size and weight mixing ratio of wood flour were measured to be $75{\mu}m$ and 7~10%, respectively. The removal test with the porous ZS ceramics prepared in these optimal condition showed very high removal efficiencies: more than 98.4% for all heavy metals and 73.9% for sulfate ion. Relative to nonporous ZS ceramics, the increment of removal efficiency of heavy metals by porous ZS ceramics with $75{\mu}m$ and 10% wood flour was 5.8%, 60.5%, 36.9%, 87.7%, 10.3%, and 57.4% for Al, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn, respectively. The mechanism analysis of removal by the porous ZS ceramics suggested that the heavy metals and sulfate ion from acid mine drainage are eliminated by multiple reactions such as adsorption and/or ion exchange as well as precipitation and/or co-precipitation.

  • A numerical computation and experimental test have been performed for the investigation of dynamic behavior of composite beams with bonded piezo ceramics. The present finite element method based on layerwise approach can effectively evaluate the characteristics of the composite beams with bonded piezo ceramics. The natural frequencies and damping values were measured by fitting the frequency response function obtained from FFT analyzer. The frequency-dependent damping properties of composite material were measured to utilize them for the finite element analysis of the composite beams with bonded piezo ceramics. The experimental results are in good agreement with those of finite element analysis.

  • This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics of heavy metals in Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using pellet-type Zeolite-StarFish ceramics (ZSF ceramics), in which natural zeolite and starfish were mixed and calcined with wood flour. Kinetic experiment showed the removal reaction of heavy metals by ZSF ceramics reached the equilibrium status within 3 hours. The optimal calcination temperature range for removal of heavy metals was measured to be $800{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$. The calcination time had little effect on the removal of heavy metal in AMD. The adequate dose of ceramics was shown to be 1.0~1.2 % for removal of heavy metals in AMD. High removal efficiencies of heavy metals (Al, As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) in AMD, more than 95 % except for Pb, were obtained under the condition of dose of ceramics more than 1.0 %. The removal efficiencies of heavy metals increased with increasing mixing concentration of wood flour. The adequate mixing concentration of wood flour was observed to be 10 %. The batch experimental results exhibited that the ZSF ceramics could act as an efficient ceramics for removal of heavy metals in AMD and the wood flour could provide porous ZSF ceramics with enhanced removal efficiency of heavy metals.

  • The humidity controlling ceramic materials was developed by applying the phenomena of dew condensation in the capillary. It is said that the humidity range which human feels comfortable is from 40 to 70% in relative humidity. In this study, the ceramic tile using natural soils such as diatomite for interior wall was investigated. In particular, we had introduced novel processing routes for fabricating microcellular ceramics tile using hollow microsphere as a pore former. The microcellular pores in the humidity controlling ceramic materials showed the superior properties such as light-weight, heat insulation. The cell density was ${\sim}1.0{\times}10^9$ cells/$cm^3$ and density of sample was 0.65 g/$cm^3$ in the case of 1.71 wt% hollow microsphere content. Also, it is observed that the BET surface area and the pore volume of the sintered diatomite tile have the values of 40.92 $m^2$/g and 0.173 $cm^3$/g.

  • This research was conducted to elucidate the removal mechanism of heavy metals and sulfate ion from acid mine drainage(AMD) by porous zeolite-slag ceramics (ZS ceramics) packed in a column reactor system. The average removal efficiencies of heavy metals and sulfate ion from AMD by the 1:3(Z:S) porous ZS ceramics in the column reactor under the HRT condition of 24 hours were Al 97.5%, As 98.8%, Cd 86.1%, Cu 96.2%, Fe 99.7%, Mn 64.1%, Pb 97.2%, Zn 66.7%, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$ 76.0% during 121 days of operation time. The XRD analysis showed that the ferric iron from AMD could be removed by adsorption and/or ion-exchange on the porous ZS ceramics. In addition it was known that Al, As, Cu, Mn, and Zn could adsorb or coprecipitate on the surface of Fe precipitates such as schwertmannite, ferrihydrite, or goethite. The EDS analysis revealed that Al, Fe, and Mn, which were of relatively high concentration in the AMD, would be adsorbed and/or ion-exchanged on the porous ZS ceramics and also exhibited that Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn could be precipitated as the form of metal hydroxide or sulfate and adsorbed or coprecipitated on the surface of Fe precipitates. The microscopic results on the porous ZS ceramics and precipitated sludge in a column reactor system suggested that the heavy metals and sulfate ion from AMD would be eliminated by the multiple mechanisms of coprecipitation, adsorption, ion-exchange as well as precipitation.
