  • Complexity of some problems often transcends the problem solving capability of human individuals. As such, we cannot but take a collaborative approach to those complex problems. Collaboration while using computing systems can take place through shared objects. However, current commercial DBMSs do not provide a satisfactory control for concurrent access to objects shared by collaborators. A new concurrency control scheme is proposed which will help a group of people work in a more collaborative and natural way. The idea of softlock is refined into three different kinds of softlocks and the roles of collaborators are taken into account in the proposal of the new scheme. Although these softlocks are illustrated together with read/write hardlocks in this paper, the use of softlocks can be extended to be exploited with other kinds of hardlocks, for example, of granularity locking.

  • In this study, we compare performance of priority schemes of FDDI and Expressnet for integrated voice and data traffic through simulation. The voice capacity of FDDI is higher than that of Expressnet for all cases considered. When compared to Expressnet, FDDI achieves a higher data throughput for file transfer traffic but it incurs a longer delay for interactive traffic.

  • Earlier efforts on optical access concentrated on the design of PONs for the collection and distribution portion of the access network. In these networks the optical hardware in the RN is very simple, but a multiple access protocol is needed for upstream traffic control. On the other hand, the role of communications is already well established in the office environment. With the advent of cheap, affordable broadband communications and the increasing complexity of consumer electronics, it seems natural to extend the network into the home. As the application of Home Area Network is ever increasing, we therefore consider connectivity between access network and home network which generates various traffic to design MAC protocol over residential network. Global-FIFO is quite simple and allows dynamic upstream bandwidth assignment on the basis of a request-and-permit mechanism. It has good bandwidth efficiency and being cell-based, it does not consider the various traffic from home network. In this paper, we design and analyze the new MAC resource assignment algorithm called MQ-FIFO (Multiple Queue-FIFO) that provides good performance under the environment of ATM-PON and Home Network.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to develop a workstation computer that allowed intraoperative touchless control of diagnostic and surgical images by a surgeon, and to report the preliminary experience with the use of the system in a series of cases in which dental surgery was performed. Materials and Methods: A custom workstation with a new motion sensing input device (Leap Motion) was set up in order to use a natural user interface (NUI) to manipulate the imaging software by hand gestures. The system allowed intraoperative touchless control of the surgical images. Results: For the first time in the literature, an NUI system was used for a pilot study during 11 dental surgery procedures including tooth extractions, dental implant placements, and guided bone regeneration. No complications were reported. The system performed very well and was very useful. Conclusion: The proposed system fulfilled the objective of providing touchless access and control of the system of images and a three-dimensional surgical plan, thus allowing the maintenance of sterile conditions. The interaction between surgical staff, under sterile conditions, and computer equipment has been a key issue. The solution with an NUI with touchless control of the images seems to be closer to an ideal. The cost of the sensor system is quite low; this could facilitate its incorporation into the practice of routine dental surgery. This technology has enormous potential in dental surgery and other healthcare specialties.

  • The purpose of this study is to interpret Landscape of Naeap Village which still preserves the Confucian culture and the traditional clans among the ideally settled villages mentioned in Joong Hwan Lee's "Taengniji" and "Joseon's Fengsui" from the time of Japanese Imperial Rule, from CPTED principles. The following are the findings of this study: First, in terms of access control and zoning, Naeap Village was controlling access from the outside with the natural environment of Banbyeoncheon River and the hills surrounding the village, the artificial environment of human-scale walls around the head house and the dead ends, and the reformation by the Confucian ideologies. Naeap Village, in particular, is prominently configured by the hierarchy of zones; the Gaehosong pine trees, Gyeongpodae, and Naeapssu by the entrance to the village are considered the village itself and the landscapes and valleys are managed by the head house. Second, the Confucian culture across the village, the traditional vegetation method that does not hide the visibility, and the workers in the farms allow natural monitoring. The surrounding visibility is also applied to the spirit of mutual cooperation in the farming society, the culture of commoners at the common well and laundry site, and the culture of ruling class at the towers and pavilions. Third, Traditional villages show the efforts to preserve and maintain the villages with the village rules, the organizational decrees of the clan, and active response to national disasters.

  • Hyangro-bong is located on the northern side of the civilian access control line and therefore has gone through natural ecological succession without human interference. Currently, it forms a distinctive natural ecosystem in which rare wild animals and plants are various. It is located in the Baekdudaegan mountain system and plays an ecologically important role as a bridge that connects the Geumgang mountain and Seorak mountain. This study investigated the flora of the eastern parts, Forest Genetic Resources Reserve Area, of Hyangro-bong. A total of 363 vascular plants that belonged to 77 families, 206 genera, 310 species, 3 subspecies, and 47 varieties were found in the study area. Rare and endangered plants identified in this study included the critically endangered Swertia wilfordii and endangered Irisuniflora var. caricina. Furthermore, 4 vulnerable species, Hanabusaya asiatica, Codonopsis pilosula, Leontopodium japonicum, and Taxus cuspidata, were found. A total of 7 families and 14 taxa including Aconitum pseudolaeve and Clematis fusca var. coreana were confirmed as endemic plants. Naturalized plants belonging to 4 families, 11 genera, and 13 species were distributed along the Hyangro-bong forest roads.

  • We will introduce a new web-based knowledge management system in progress, in which XML-based web information extraction and our structuring knowledge technologies are combined using ontology-based natural language processing. Our aim is to provide efficient access to heterogeneous information on the web, enabling users to use a wide range of textual and non textual resources, such as newspapers and databases, effortlessly to accelerate knowledge acquisition from such knowledge sources. In order to achieve the efficient knowledge management, we propose at first an XML-based Web information extraction which contains a sophisticated control language to extract data from Web pages. With using standard XML Technologies in the system, our approach can make extracting information easy because of a) detaching rules from processing, b) restricting target for processing, c) Interactive operations for developing extracting rules. Then we propose a structuring knowledge system which includes, 1) automatic term recognition, 2) domain oriented automatic term clustering, 3) similarity-based document retrieval, 4) real-time document clustering, and 5) visualization. The system supports integrating different types of databases (textual and non textual) and retrieving different types of information simultaneously. Through further explanation to the specification and the implementation technique of the system, we will demonstrate how the system can accelerate knowledge acquisition on the Web even for novice users of the field.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the application method of CPTED for safer schools. For the evaluation of the school safety, we invented the school survey checklist based on the principles of CPTED such as natural surveillance, access control, maintenance, and activity support. The checklist is consisted of three parts of schools including boundary, outside of the building, and inside of the building. For the field survey of schools, the 30 schools(elementary, middle, and high school) were selected in Seoul and Kyong-gi area as the crime rate. The result of this study shows the safety score for the most of schools were not satisfied. In addition, we realized the diverse strategies to enhance the school safety should be applied to schools in terms of CPTED. The detailed findings and policy implications will be discussed in the context.
