This study aims to elucidate characteristics of groundwater level fluctuation at riverbank filtration sites in Daesan-myeon, Changwon City. Groundwater level fluctuation, river water level change and stream-aquifer interaction are very important to estimate optimal discharge rate of the pumping well. Water level contours from February 2003 to October 2003 show normal decreasing trend toward the Nakdong river with the hydraulic gradient of 0.008. However, flow reversion occurs when groundwater is discharged at the pumping wells or rise of the Nakdong river by rainfall. The fluctuation of the Nakdong river ranges 0 - 10 m msl. Autocorrelation analysis was conducted to the groundwater levels measured on the six monitoring wells (DS1, DS2, DS3, DS4, DS6 and DS7). The analyzed waterlevel data can be grouped into three: group 1 (DS1 and DS3) represents strong linearity and long memory effect, group 2 (DS1 and DS6) intermediate linearity and memory, and group 3 (DS4 and DS7) weak linearity and memory. Waterlevels of group 1 wells are relatively closely related to the change of river-water level. Those of group 2 wells are largely affected by the pumping and the river-water level, and those of group 3 wells are strongly linked to pumping.

A field study was performed to test effectiveness of a bloluminescent genetically engineered microorganism (GEM) for bioremediation process monitoring and control. The study employed Pseudomonas fluorescens HK44 that was the first strain approved for field application in the U.S. for bioremediation purposes. HK44 contains lux gene fused within a naphthalene degradative pathway, allowing this GEM to bioluminesce as it degrades naphthalene as well as substituted naphthalenes and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) , Results showed that HK44 was maintained in both PAH-contarninated and uncontaminated soils even 660 days after inoculation. HK44 was able to produce bioluminescence in response to PAHs in soil. Although effectiveness of chemical remediation was not assessed due to heterogeneous distribution of contaminants, decreased concentration of naphthalene was shown in the soils, Taken together, HK44 was useful for in situ bioremediation process monitoring and control. This work is so far the only field release of a GEM for bioremediation purposes.
Beryllium (Be), cobalt (Co), thallium (Tl) and vanadium (V) are candidates of 21 priority soil pollutants in Korea. The distribution of their concentration in soils from three contamination sources including industrial, roadside and mining areas was investigated. Concentrations of the metals were evaluated quantitatively using pollution indices and the fractionation of metals was conducted using modified SM&T (Standards Measurements and Testing programme) sequential extraction. Concentrations of the metals for all samples from industrial and roadside soils were within the range of natural background levels, while some of Be in soils from abandoned mines exceeded that the range. Enrichment Factor (EF) and Nemerow Integrated Pollution Index (NIPI) for Be, Co, Tl and V showed that there are effects or possibilities of anthropogenic activities. Pollution Load Index (PLI) analyses indicated all investigated sites needed further monitoring. The results of sequential extractions indicated mobile fractions (F1+F2) of Be, Tl and V were below 30% except some of Co in soil, which implies their low mobility to neighboring environment media. Variable tools like sequential extraction, comparison with background/actual concentration and pollution indices, as well as aqua regia extraction should be considered when evaluating Be, Co, Tl, V in soil.
For hydrogeological studies, it is of importance to observe hydraulic head in order to interpret groundwater flow, characterize aquifers, and calibrate groundwater flow model. This study analyzed the zonal variation of hydraulic heads at the eight monitoring wells (GM-1~GM-8) installed with multi-packers in a coastal area and verified vertical and lateral trends of the hydraulic gradients. Hydraulic heads were expressed as the depth of water because the monitoring wells have different depths. The hydraulic gradient at the nearest well (GM-5) shows 0.0142 with increasing trend of hydraulic gradient along depth. This fact indicates typical phenomenon of the discharge area. On the other hand, GM-1 and GM-2 wells in coastal area demonstrate constant hydraulic gradient down to the depth of 100 meters while at the zone of deeper than 100 m the hydraulic gradients illustrate 0.0196 and 0.0735, respectively. This indicates that horizontal flow is dominant at shallower zone than 100 m whereas upward flow is dominant at the zone deeper than 100 m. GM-3 well located farther than the other wells from the coast shows a small hydraulic gradient of 0.0046 that evidences a prevalent horizontal flow between the recharge area and the discharge area.

The feasibility of stimulating in situ aerobic cometabolic activity of indigenous microorganisms was investigated in a trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated aquifer. A series of single-well natural drift tests (SWNDTs) was conducted by injecting site groundwater amended with a bromide tracer and combinations of toluene, oxygen, nitrate, ethylene and TCE into an existing monitoring well and by sampling the same well over time. Three field tests, Push-pull Transport Test, Drift Biostimulation Test, and Drift Surrogate Activity Test, were performed in sequence. Initial rate of toluene degradation was much faster than the rate of bromide dilution resulting from natural groundwater drift, indicating stimulation of indigenous toluene-oxidizing microorganisms. Transformation of ethylene, a surrogate probing overall activity of TCE transformation, was also observed, and its transformation results in the production of ethylene oxide, suggesting that some tolueneoxidizing microorganisms stimulated may express a orthomonooxygenase enzyme. Also in situ transformation of TCE was confirmed by greater retardation of TCE than bromide after the stimulation of toluene-oxidizing microorganisms. These results indicate that, in this environment, toluene and oxygen additions stimulated the growth and aerobic cometabolic activity of indigenous microorganisms expressing orthomonooxygenase enzymes. The simple, low-cost field test method presented in this study provides an effective method for conducting rapid field assessments and pilot testing of aerobic cometabolism, which has previously hindered application of this technology to groundwater remediation.
General characteristics of groundwater contamination by As were reviewed with several recent researches, and its occurrence in groundwater of Korea was investigated based on a ffw previous studies and a groundwater quality survey in Nonsan and Geumsan areas. In Bangladesh, which has been known as the most serious arsenic calamity country, about $28\%$ of the shallow groundwaters exceeded the Bangladesh drinking water standard, $50{\mu}g/L$, and it was estimated that about 28 million people were exposed to concentrations greater than the standard. Groundwater was characterized by circum-neutral pH with a moderate to strong reducing conditions. Low concentrations of $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NO_3^-$, and high contents of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and $NH_4^+$ were typical chemical characteristics. Total As concentrations were enriched in the Holocene alluvial aquifers with a dominance of As(III) species. It was generally agreed that reductive dissolution of Fe oxyhydroxides was the main mechanism for the release of As into groundwater coupling with the presence of organic matters and microbial activities as principal factors. A new model has also been suggested to explain how arsenic can naturally contaminate groundwaters far from the ultimate source with transport of As by active tectonic uplift and glaciatiion during Pleistocene, chemical weathering and deposition, and microbial reaction processes. In Korea, it has not been reported to be so serious As contamination, and from the national groundwater quality monitoring survey, only about $1\%$ of grounwaters have concentrations higher than $10{\mu}g/:L.$ However, it was revealed that $19.3\%$ of mineral waters, and $7\%$ of tube-well waters from Nonsan and Geumsan areas contained As concentrations above $10{\mu}g/:L.$. Also, percentages exceeding this value during detailed groundwater quality surveys were $36\%\;and\;22\%$ from Jeonnam and Ulsan areas, respectively, indicating As enrichment possibly by geological factors and local mineralization. Further systematic researches need to proceed in areas potential to As contamination such as mineralized, metasedimentary rock-based, alluvial, and acid sulfate soil areas. Prior to that, it is required to understand various geochemical and microbial processes, and groundwater flow characteristics affecting the behavior of As.

In this study, a cold well and a warm one with the distance of 100 m were installed in the alluvial aquifer. Groundwater used as the heat and the cold source of heat pump was designed to flow into the warm and the cold well with a diameter of 200 mm. In order to increase the heat and cold storage in aquifer, six auxiliary wells with the diameter of 50 mm and the depth of 30 m were installed at an interval of 5 m from the main well. Also, heat pump 50 RT, the thermal tank $40m^3$, and a remote control and monitoring system were installed in three single-span greenhouses ($2,100m^2$) for growing tomato in Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do. According to the aquifer heat storage test which had been conducted from Aug. 31 to Sep. 22, 2016, warm water of $850m^3$ was found to flow into warm well. The temperature of the injected water was $30^{\circ}C$ (intake temperature : $15^{\circ}C$), and the heat of 12.8 Gcal was stored. The greenhouse heating test in winter had been conducted from Nov. 21, 2016 to Apr. 30, 2017. On Nov. 21, 2016 when heating greenhouse started, the aquifer temperature of the warm well was $18.5^{\circ}C$. The COP for heating with water source at $18.5^{\circ}C$ was 3.8. The intake water temperature of warm well was gradually lowered to the temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ on Jan. 2, 2017 and the heat pump COP was measured to be 3.2 at that time. As a result, the heat pump COP was improved by 18 %. and retrieval heat was 8 Gcal, the retrieval rate of heat stored in aquifer was estimated at 63 %.
Climate adaptation strategies for water utilities including 16 water treatment plants(WTPs) in Jeju were investigated. Drought, heat wave, and heavy rain were among the most significant climate factors affecting water utilities in Jeju. Heat wave increases water temperature, which in turn increases the concentration of algae, color, and odor materials. Some adaption strategies for the heat wave can be strengthening water monitoring and introducing advanced water treatments. Heavy rain increases raw water turbidity in surface water. The 7 WTPs that take raw water from streams or springs had a maximum turbidity of less than 50 NTU under heavy rain. However, due to concerns of turbidity spike in treated water, some WTPs discontinued intaking raw water when raw water turbidity increased more than 2 NTU. They instead received treated water from other WTPs which took groundwater for water supply. This happens because of the low skills of employees. Thus, there needs to be an increase in operator competency and upgrade of water facilities for the adaption of heavy rain. To improve adaption for the drought, there should be an increase in the capacity of intake facilities of surface water as well as a decrease in water loss. In addition, water consumption per person should be decreased.

Water supply is decreasing due to climate change, and coastal and island regions are highly dependent on groundwater, reducing the amount of available water. For sustainable water supply in coastal and island regions, it is necessary to accurately diagnose the current condition and efficiently distribute and manage water. For a precise analysis of the groundwater flow in the coastal island region, submarine fresh groundwater discharge was calculated for the Seongsan basin in the eastern part of Jeju Island. Two methods were used to estimate the thickness of the fresh groundwater. One method employed vertical interpolation of measured electrical conductivity in a multi depth monitoring well; the other used theoretical Ghyben-Herzberg ratio. The value using the Ghyben-Herzberg ratio makes it impossible to accurately estimate the changing salt-saltwater interface, and the value analyzed by electrical conductivity can represent the current state of the freshwater-saltwater interface. Observed parameter was distributed on a virtual grid. The average of submarine fresh groundwater discharge fluxes for the virtual grid was determined as the watershed's representative flux. The submarine fresh groundwater discharge and flux distribution by year were also calculated at the basin scale. The method using electrical conductivity estimated the submarine fresh groundwater discharge from 2018 to 2020 to be 6.27 × 106 m3/year; the method using the Ghyben-Herzberg ratio estimated a discharge of 10.87 × 106 m3/year. The results presented in this study can be used as basis data for policies that determine sustainable water supply by using precise water budget analysis in coastal and island areas.
This is conducted to observe underground temperature and to analyze its change affected by climate condition and soil infiltration in the mountainous area, Yesan region, Chungcheong-namdo province. Additionally, underground temperature change is also simulated using air temperature and soil thermal properties with a numerical model. Soil temperature monitoring data acquired from each depth, 20 cm, 50 cm, and 100 cm, indicates that the data within 50 cm in depth shows peak-shaped big fluctuation directly affected by air temperature and it at 100 cm has open-shaped small fluctuation. Underground temperature variation, a difference between high and low values, during monitoring period is weakly proportional to hydraulic conductivity of the sediment and it is assumed that water plays a part in delivering air temperature in soil. The underground temperature estimated by a numerical model is very similar to the observed data with an average value of 0.99 cross-correlation coefficient. From the result of this study, the aquifer unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil and the groundwater recharge is likely to be able to estimate with underground temperature profile calculated using a numerical model.
