  • Efforts for developing the domestic horse industry in South Korea are evident through the various national policies. Proper management of stables for ensuring the health of horses is essential to sustain the growing equine industry. This study aimed to measure the fine dust emissions in stables based on the type and quantity of bedding used for horses, for establishing guidelines pertaining to bedding use in stables. The stables accommodated 12 horses. Sawdust, wood shavings, wood pellet, and straw were chosen as treatments. Three different quantities (approximately 3, 6, and 9 cm in height) were applied for each type. Fine dust measurements were carried out at three time points, with each measuring period lasting for approximately three weeks. Measurements included PM2.5 and PM10 fine dust levels. The initial analysis revealed that, sawdust with 9 cm bedding had the highest dust levels; approximately 54.6 ㎍/m3, for PM2.5 and 95.3 ㎍/m3, for PM10. Sawdust bedding at the highest quantity (9 cm) exhibited significantly higher initial fine dust emissions. These findings suggest that bedding materials with smaller particle size, such as sawdust and wood shavings, tend to produce finer dust. Initially, the fine dust emissions decreased in all bedding types and quantities, possibly due to the increased moisture content of bedding owing to horse manure production. However, emissions increased subsequently due to ammonia production.

  • The identification of embryo-specific genes would provide insights into early embryonic development. However, the current methods employed to identify the genes that are expressed at a specific developmental stage are labor intensive and suffer from high rates of false positives. Here we employed a new and accurate reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technology that involves annealing control primers(ACPs) to identify the genes that are specifically expressed in porcine blastocysts compared to 2-cell stage embryos. • Novel bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanyl purine nucleoside analogues were synthesized as potential antiherpetic agents via a bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanol (${\pm}$)-8, which was prepared using a highly efficient carbenoid cycloaddition reaction. A highly diastereoselective reduction of ketone and a Mitsunobu reaction for the condensation of glycosyl donor (${\pm}$)-12 with 6-chloropurine were employed.

  • Genetic components introduced into approved GM crops are a key subject for safety assessment and provide a basis for the development of detection methods for GM crops. In order to understand the genetic components in approved GM crops comprehensively, we screened the genetic vector maps of GM crops that had been approved for commercialization around the world. A total of 64 varieties from 5 major GM crop species (maize, canola, cotton, soybean, and tomato) were subjected to analysis. The genetic components included genes, promoters, terminators, and selection marker. This survey may be useful for researchers who develop GM crops and methods for detecting GM crops.

  • A cellulase (endo-${\beta}$-1,4-D-glucanase(E.C.3.2.1.4)) was isolated from the hepatopancreas of abalone Haliotis discus hannai by EST analysis. The abalone cellulase named HdEG compassed 1977 bp, including 195 bp in the 5'untranslated region, 1680 bp in the open reading frame which encodes 560 amino acid residues, and 92 bp in the 3'-untranslated region. The C-terminal region of the HdEG showed 44-52% identity to the catalytic domains of glycoside hydrolase family 9 (GHF9)-cellulases from arthropods and bacteria. The recombinant cellulase, pEHdEG was produced in E. coli with being fused with C-terminal His-tag. The expressed protein showed a single band (~62 kDa) on Western blotting which was consistent with the value (61,878 Da) calculated from the DNA sequence.

  • Relationship between hsp 70 expression and development of thermotolerance in the olive flounder was investigated by exposing the fish to 23 or 26$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. After selected intervals, they were re-exposed to 31$^{\circ}C$ for a duration of 15 min. Theremotolerance rapidly developed with increasing interval and peaked at 3 h interval. Subsequently, it gradually decayed and disappeared by 24 h interval. The flounder displayed remarkably high levels of hsp 70 mRNA and protein, as compared to control flounder. Hence, the olive flounder acquires thermotolerance, which is positively correlated with the synthesis of hsp 70.

  • The expression of HR-like lesion inducing gene of Oryza sativa (OsHRL) was slightly increased by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) infection. Transgenic rice plants over-expressing OsHRL gene were challenged with Xoo and the development of disease symptoms were examined to investigate the effect of OsHRL gene expression on plant defense responses. The over-expression of OsHRL increased disease resistance against Xoo compared with wild type plants.

  • Soil acidity or alkalinity are serious limitations for crop production. The purpose of this study was to clarify the negative effects of extreme pH stress (low and high) on alfalfa vegetative growth (VG) and biomass accumulation (BA). Two-week-old alfalfa seedlings were exposed to different pH (4.0, 4.5, 7.0, 8.0 and 8.5, respectively) levels for 72 hours. Alfalfa grown at pH 4.0 and 8.5 significantly reduced VG and BA, wherein as neutral pH (7.0) comparably exhibited better growth and biomass yield. These results indicate that extreme acidic or alkaline level are critical limiting factors for growth and biomass yield in alfalfa.
