The purpose of the research was to investigate the characteristics and related factors of cyber dating violence. The subjects were 548 adolescents in high schools. The gathered information was analyzed by frequency, percent, 1-test, ANOVA, and Correlation by using SPSS 10.0 program. The results were as follows: (1) $65.3{\%}$ of the answerers experienced cyber dating, and $44.5{\%}$ of the students have experienced cyber dating violence. (2) $40.3{\%}$ of the students were damaged by psychological violence, and $21.1{\%}$ of the students have caused psychological violence. (3) $41.9{\%}$ of the damaged students and $18{\%}$ of the perpetrating students were included in the total answerers, but among 244 experienced students, $94.3{\%}$ were damaged students and $40.6{\%}$ perpetrated sexual violence, so it is concluded that experienced students experience sexual violence. (4) Looking over the social demography factors and cyber dating violence, boys rather than girls, and vocational school students rather than academic school students have more cyber violence experiences. (5) The relationship between psychological and sexual violence has a significant relationship with all cyber violence experiences.
Objectives: In recent years, multiple studies have investigated the issue of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Korea. However, most of those studies have focused on IPV against women, while overlooking the problem of men IPV victimization. Considering this, the current study identified risk and protective factors for IPV and examined their influence on IPV victimization among Korean men. Methods: We used a nationally representative sample of 1668 Korean men from the 2013 Korea National Survey on Domestic Violence. The associations between potential IPV risk factors and different types of IPV were investigated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Specifically, separate analyses were conducted of 5 types of IPV (neglect, controlling behaviors, emotional violence, economic violence, and physical violence). Results: The prevalence of IPV among Korean men and women showed only marginal gender differences. Controlling behaviors (men, 23.3%; women, 23.9%) and emotional violence (men, 16.5%; women, 18.8%) were the most common types of IPV reported, followed by neglect (men, 11.2%; women, 11.7%). Separate logistic regression analyses for the 5 subtypes of IPV revealed that mutual IPV was a strong predictor of IPV. Men who abused their wives were more likely to experience neglect (odds ratio [OR], 29.24; p<0.01), controlling behaviors (OR, 36.61; p<0.01), emotional violence (OR, 58.07; p<0.01), economic violence (OR, 18.78; p<0.01), and physical violence (OR, 38.09; p<0.01). Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that IPV intervention strategies should particularly focus on couples whose relationship is characterized by patterns of bidirectional violence.
Background: Despite a growing number of investigations exploring the health problems in precarious workers, there is still a paucity of studies investigating workplace violence in workers with multi-party employment arrangements (WMPEAs). This study was aimed at comparing the prevalence of workplace violence between non-WMPEA and WMPEA. Methods: The 5th Korean Working Conditions Survey data were used. The study subjects were employees aged 20-74, with 26,239 non-WMPEA and 1,556 WMPEA. WMPEA included temporary agency workers and workers providing outsourced services. Workplace violence including verbal abuse, unwanted sexual attention, threats, and humiliating behaviors were used as outcome variables. The odds ratios of risk of workplace violence were calculated using multiple logistic regression. Results: The age-standardized prevalence of workplace violence was significantly higher among WMPEA. After adjusting for all covariates, the risk of workplace violence among WMPEA was still significant (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.5-2.2) compared with non-WMPEA. The odds ratio of workplace violence among female WMPEA was 1.99 (95% CI 1.53-2.59), which is higher than that of male WMPEA (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.18-1.96). Conclusion: We found that WMPEA were exposed to higher risk of workplace violence. Discrimination against WMPEA in the working environment and management policy need to be corrected. It is also necessary to identify the risk factors of workplace violence in WMPEA and to make efforts to prevent violence.
The study examines the prevalence and characteristics of school violence in elementary school, utilizing a census-based nationwide sample of 2,037 adults, 19 years of age and older. A structured questionnaire was administered, which reported their experiences of school violence retrospectively. The findings revealed that a third of the respondents were victims of one or more episodes of school violence during their elementary school years. Men reported much higher rates of victimization than women, and those from low-income families experienced more episodes of victimization than those from middle or high-income families. The study also showed that the rate of school violence is increasing among the younger generations.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between family functioning and family violence. The SPSS 10.0 for Windows was used to analyze data obtained through 1,044 children who live in Gwangju Chonnam area. Major findings are as follows: 1. Wife abuse and child abuse showed significant difference according to family cohesion, family flexibility, and family-system types. 2. In family violence non-experience group, 'balanced family' was found in 36.2% of the sample and 'extreme family' in 7.8%. In family violence experience group, 'balanced family' was found in 12.7% of the sample and 'extreme family' in 15.4%. 3. There were significant negative correlations between family functioning and family violence. Family cohesion and family flexibility had significant negative correlation with wife abuse and child abuse.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of workplace violence among intensive care unit nurses. Methods: The participants of this research were twelve registered nurses who work in the intensive care units (ICU) at the hospitals in Seoul and Gyunggido. Data were collected by individual in-depth interviews and analyzed using the phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi. Results: From significant statements, five theme clusters emerged as follow; 1) vulnerable young women to violence, 2) my own reflection was bruised and exhausted, 3) a hopeless everyday, 4) seeking a solution in relation, 5) establishing one's status as a professional nurse. Conclusion: This study provides a profound understanding on the experiences of workplace violence among ICU nurses. The hospitals are suggested to provide a safe environment by developing programs and policies to prevent and cope with hospital workplace violence for ICU nurses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore violence experienced by workers in the distribution industry. Methods: The research subjects were 236 workers from 2 department stores and 1 large scale discount store located in Daejeon City, Korea. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test, and logistic regression analysis. Results: 72.9% of the research subjects experienced verbal violence, and 9.3% of the respondents experienced physical violence during last year. 17.8% of the respondents reported that they had experience of sexual harassment at their workplaces. The variables which affected verbal violence included working departments and stress level, whereas the variable that affected physical violence was educational level of workers. The variables that affected experience of sexual harassment turned out to be gender as well as the duration of work at the current workplaces. Conclusion: The findings from this research revealed that many of the workers engaged in the distribution industry were exposed to workplace violence. For the reduction of risk of workplace violence for these workers, it is required to develop and execute programs including violence related policies and education about workplace violence.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate experiences of violence with patients or family members by paramedics working at emergency rooms. Methods: A questionnaire was administered from June 1 to 31, 2017 to 225 paramedics working at 27 emergency medical centers. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS statistics ver 24.0 program. Results: Within the past year, 208(92.9%) of 224 participants experienced violence among whom 202(90.2%) experienced verbal abuse, 193(86.2%) experienced physical threat, 89(39.7%) experienced physical violence, and 52(23.2%) experienced sexual violence. The level of violence response depending on the overlapping experience of violence type showed significant difference from emotional response (p= .001), social response (p= .001), physical response (p= .004), and overall violence response (p= .001). Conclusion: In conclusion, paramedics are frequently exposed to violence in the emergency rooms, of which they mostly experience verbal abuse. In addition, because the reporting system in the event of violence and the coping process are not well-informed, paramedics are unable to sufficiently utilize the reporting system and programs established within the institution. Therefore, the support of the legal system is needed to create a safe working environment for the medical staff who work in the emergency medical centers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reality of workplace violence experienced by emergency nurses and the relationship of violence response to professional quality of life. Methods: The participants in this study were 899 emergency nurses from Korea nationwide. Data were obtained through an online survey done during October, 2017. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Of the emergency nurses, 72.1% recognized that workplace violence is serious. Experience with workplace violence correlated positively with violence reaction (r=.32, p<.001), burnout (r-.20, p<.001) and secondary trauma (r=.22, p<.001). Also, reaction to violence was positively correlated with burnout (r=.28, p<.001) and secondary trauma (r=.56, p<.001). Conclusion: Findings indicate that the diverse workplace violence experienced by emergency nurses decreases their professional quality of life. Further study is needed to develop solutions to the problem of workplace violence in emergency settings.
The purpose of this study is to study the perceptions and attitudes of various married couples(non-violent couples, violent couples, indicted couples) on the Domestic Violence Acts, and collect opinions on the legal treatment of indicted couples, especially on Protection Orders and criminal punishment. The questionnaires included 542 couples residing in Pusan and 50 indicted couples in various major cities of Korea. The major results were as follows: First, couples in general understood well the Domestic Violence Acts, and their history of domestic violence did not affect their knowledge on the Acts. Second, the attitudes of the husbands on Domestic Violence Acts were affected by whether or not they had inflicted violence on their wives. Husbands who have a history domestic violence, but were not arrested and indicted had negative attitudes on the in- tervention of the police. They also did not want to call the police for assistance. However, they showed positive attitudes towards programs aimed at preventing domestic violence. Third, the attitudes of wives on Domestic Violence Acts were not associated with experienced domestic violence. Fourth, indicted couples felt that Protection Orders were necessary and they were willing to follow the Protection Orders set forth by public prosecutors. Victimized wives wanted another form of sentencing rather than a fine, and they wanted to have their opinions heard when their spouse was arrested and when sentencing took place.
