The Morphological Study of Wild and Farmed Olive Flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus): The Role of Indirect Selection within and between Populations

  • This study was conducted to analyze the difference of body types within and between wild and farmed populations of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus using measured records of morphological traits. The results showed that surveyed traits and standard deviation were $1,355{\pm}742g$ of body weight, $48.01{\pm}7.79cm$ of total length, and $40.96{\pm}6.80cm$ of body length. Also body height, body shape index and condition factor were $17.19{\pm}3.43cm$, $9.99{\pm}0.74$ and $11.16{\pm}1.54$, respectively. As result of least squares mean and standard error for each trait assumed in this study, those of farmed population showed significantly higher than those of wild population in all traits, exclusively in total length and body length (p<0.01). Particularly, the values of the body height and the body weight of the farmed population were higher than those of the wild population in the same total length. And the phenotypic correlation coefficients of the body weight, the total length, the body length and the body height showed strong positive correlation in all populations. These result suggested that morphological differences exist in farmed and wild flounder. Therefore, introduction of wild flounder is essential for the future production to improve the body type of farmed flounder, and parental fish should be chosen by considering selection of commercially important traits in the production process.

Effect of Ultra-sonication Treatment on the Quality Characteristics of Baked Eggs

  • The effect of ultra-sonication on quality characteristics and flavor of baked eggs was studied. One hundred and twenty eggs were cooked and assigned to six treatments groups (n=20 each) that were then soaked in saline solution at various concentrations (5, 10 and 18%) with/or without further ultra-sonication treatment at 35 kHz for 1 h. The pH values were lower in the ultra-sonicated samples in comparison with the non-ultra-sonicated samples (p<0.05). The values for texture traits were higher in the samples soaked in 10% saline solution with ultra-sonication in comparison with other remaining treatments or control (p<0.05). The sodium content in samples soaked in 10% saline solution with ultra-sonication was similar to that of the ones soaked in 18% saline solution without ultra-sonication. The higher flavor scores were also given for the ultra-sonicated samples in comparison with the control or non-ultra-sonicated ones. These results suggest that the application of ultra-sonication may produce a faster sodium penetration into baked eggs, simultaneously improves some textural traits (e.g., hardness) as well as flavor of the products.

  • Novel bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanyl purine nucleoside analogues were synthesized as potential antiherpetic agents via a bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanol (${\pm}$)-8, which was prepared using a highly efficient carbenoid cycloaddition reaction. A highly diastereoselective reduction of ketone and a Mitsunobu reaction for the condensation of glycosyl donor (${\pm}$)-12 with 6-chloropurine were employed.

Expressed Sequence Tag Analysis of Olive Flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus): Genes and Expression Profile from the Liver

  • Expressed sequence tag (EST) analysis was conducted using a cDNA library made from the liver mRNA of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). In the survey of 421 ESTs, 362 showed significant homology to previously described genes while 59 were unidentified or novel. Comparative analysis of the identified ESTs showed that 69 $(19.0\%)$ clones were identified as homologous to the previously reported olive flounder ESTs, and 279 $(77.1\%)$ clones were identified as orthologs of known genes from other organisms. The remaining 14 $(3.9\%)$ clones were identified as orthologs of known sequences with unknown functions. These tagged cDNA clones, identified and unidentified, could provide fundamental baseline data for genomic studies of this species.

Differences in fine dust emissions based on bedding type and quantity in horse stables

  • Efforts for developing the domestic horse industry in South Korea are evident through the various national policies. Proper management of stables for ensuring the health of horses is essential to sustain the growing equine industry. This study aimed to measure the fine dust emissions in stables based on the type and quantity of bedding used for horses, for establishing guidelines pertaining to bedding use in stables. The stables accommodated 12 horses. Sawdust, wood shavings, wood pellet, and straw were chosen as treatments. Three different quantities (approximately 3, 6, and 9 cm in height) were applied for each type. Fine dust measurements were carried out at three time points, with each measuring period lasting for approximately three weeks. Measurements included PM2.5 and PM10 fine dust levels. The initial analysis revealed that, sawdust with 9 cm bedding had the highest dust levels; approximately 54.6 ㎍/m3, for PM2.5 and 95.3 ㎍/m3, for PM10. Sawdust bedding at the highest quantity (9 cm) exhibited significantly higher initial fine dust emissions. These findings suggest that bedding materials with smaller particle size, such as sawdust and wood shavings, tend to produce finer dust. Initially, the fine dust emissions decreased in all bedding types and quantities, possibly due to the increased moisture content of bedding owing to horse manure production. However, emissions increased subsequently due to ammonia production.
