  • Closure of interdental spaces using proximal build-ups with resin composite is considered to be practical and conservative. However, a comprehensive approach combining two or more treatment modalities may be needed to improve esthetics. This case report describes the management of a patient with multiple diastemas, a peg-shaped lateral incisor and midline deviation in the maxillary anterior area. Direct resin bonding along with orthodontic movement of teeth allows space closure and midline correction, consequently, creating a better esthetic result.

  • Necrotizing periodontal diseases, especially acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG), it should be noted, occur abruptly and progress rapidly, eventually causing severe soft-tissue and alveolar bone loss. This report presents the cases of two ANUG patients and provides a brief treatment protocol for easy and effective clinical management. After proper diagnosis, sequential treatment with cessation of mechanical brushing, along with a prescription of systemic antibiotics and chlorhexidine as a mouth rinse, scaling, root planing, and supportive periodontal therapy, was utilized. In all cases discussed in this report, there was marked improvement in a few days. ANUG, though an uncommon disease, can be efficiently managed with proper diagnosis and immediate treatment.

  • A 7-year-old, spayed female Chihuahua with dyspnea, intermittent cyanosis, and dermal plaques was diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism. Thoracic radiographs showed markedly hyperdense alveoli in multiple lung lobes. Computed tomography (CT) images showed lung mineralization confined to the lung parenchyma and pituitary macroadenoma. Pulmonary mineralization secondary to hyperadrenocorticism is commonly found on histopathologic examination. However, those lesions are rarely identified radiographically. We describe obvious pulmonary mineralization secondary to hyperadrenocorticism found on radiographs and present the first report regarding CT imaging of the mineralization. Pulmonary mineralization should be considered when a dog affected by hyperadrenocorticism shows diffuse lung mineralization on radiographs.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to report the effect of Korean traditional treatment and progressive muscle relaxation for insomnia. Methods : We treated two patients scored more than 15 point at insomnia severity index by korean traditional treatment and progressive muscle relaxation. Results : After treatment, sleep duration and sleep quality was improved. Insomnia Severity Index, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score were decreased. Conclusions : We may conclude that korean traditional treatment and progressive muscle relaxation is effective in patients with insomnia.

  • Since the majority of cases with unilateral peripheral facial palsy are idiopathic, radiological studies such as CT or MRI are not usually recommended for further evaluation. We report a patient with peripheral facial palsy caused by minor salivary gland tumor which was demonstrated by appropriate imaging study.

  • Sclerotium rot was found on Cymbidium orchids at Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea, in July, 2010. Symptoms occurred on low leaves, which turned yellowish, after which the entire plant wilted. Severely infected plants were blighted and eventually died. White mycelial mats and sclerotia appeared on pseudobulbs. Based on the mycological characteristics and pathogenicity, the causal fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report of new Sclerotium rot on Cymbidium spp. caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

  • Segmental amputation of the digits and hand has been described as a contraindication for replantation because of poor results. We report the results of replantation for a patient who experienced multi-segment amputation of the hand. A 39-year-old man presented six hours after an accident, while using a straw cutter, that caused a multi-segment amputation of the entire palm and digits. The replantation surgery took 18 hours. We observed the patient gain satisfactory function of the hand. For replantation of a multi-segment amputation, connecting as many blood vessels as possible without tension is most important.

  • The Outerbridge-Kashiwagi (O-K) procedure is one of popular procedures for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the elbow. Although reliable outcome has been reported in the literature, intraoperative and postoperative complications may occur. Acute postoperative neurologic complications are rarely reported in the literature. We report a case of acute complete ulnar neuropathy following O-K procedure in the elbow with longstanding flexion loss. Prophylactic ulnar nerve decompression during the O-K procedure should be considered in the elbows with osteoarthritis and prolonged severe flexion contracture.

  • Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious complication that can occur after orthopedic surgery. Most instances of PE in the orthopedic field have occurred after hip or knee arthroplasties or after fracture surgeries. The occurrence of PE related to arthroscopic shoulder surgery is very rare. We report a case of PE that developed after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, in which the patient did not show preoperatively any remarkable risk factors for PE. We also review the current literature related to this topic.
