Real-time estimation of responses and loads of real-scale pipes subjected to earthquakes and external loads using digital twin technology

  • Infrastructure facilities contain various pipe systems, which can be considerably damaged by external loads such as earthquakes. Therefore, structural health monitoring (SHM) and safety assessment of pipes are crucial. Digital twin technology for SHM of pipes is important in the industry. This study proposes a digital twin system that estimates the behavior, stress, and external load of real-scale pipes in real time under simultaneous seismic and external loads using a minimum number of sensors. Vibration tests were performed to construct the digital twin system, and a numerical model was developed that considered the dynamic characteristics of a target pipe. Moreover, a reduced-order modeling technique of a numerical model was applied to enhance its real-time performance. The digital twin system successfully estimated the response of the pipe at all points. Verification of the digital twin system was performed by comparing it with the experimental parameters of a real-scale pipe. The proposed digital twin system can help enhance SHM and system's maintenance.

Constructing a digital twin for estimating the response and load of a piping system subjected to seismic and arbitrary loads

  • In recent years, technological developments have rapidly increased the number of complex structures and equipment in the industrial. Accordingly, the prognostics and health monitoring (PHM) technology has become significant. The safety assessment of industrial sites requires data obtained by installing a number of sensors in the structure. Therefore, digital twin technology, which forms the core of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is attracting attention in the safety field. The research on digital twin technology of structures subjected to seismic loads has been conducted recently. Hence, this study proposes a digital twin system that estimates the responses and arbitrary load in real time by utilizing the minimum sensor to a pipe that receives a seismic and arbitrary load. To construct the digital twin system, a finite-element model was created considering the dynamic characteristics of the pipe system, and then updating the finite-element model. In addition, the calculation speed was improved using a finite-element model that applied the reduced-order modeling (ROM) technology to achieve real-time performance. The constructed digital twin system successfully and rapidly estimated the load and the point where the sensor was not attached. The accuracy of the constructed digital twin system was verified by comparing the response of the digital twin model with that derived by using the load estimated from the digital twin model as input in the finite-element model.

  • The manufacturing industry is continuously pursuing advanced technology and smartization as it converges with innovative technology. Improvement of manufacturing productivity is achieved by monitoring, analyzing, and controlling the facilities and processes of the manufacturing site in real time through a network. In this paper, we proposed a new OPC-UA based digital twin model for smart factory facilities. A testbed system for USB flash drive packaging facility was implemented based on the proposed digital twin model and OPC-UA data communication scheme. Through OPC-UA based digital twin model, equipment and process status information is transmitted and received from PLC to monitoring and control 3D digital models and physical models in real time. The usefulness of the developed digital twin testbed system was evaluated through usability test.

  • The importance of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in the industry is increasing due to various loads, such as earthquakes and wind, having a significant impact on the performance of structures and equipment. Estimating responses is crucial for the effective health management of these assets. However, using numerous sensors in facilities and equipment for response estimation causes economic challenges. Additionally, it could require a response from locations where sensors cannot be attached. Digital twin technology has garnered significant attention in the industry to address these challenges. This paper constructs a digital twin system utilizing the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model to estimate responses in a pipe system under simultaneous seismic load and arbitrary loads. The performance of the data-driven digital twin system was verified through a comparative analysis of experimental data, demonstrating that the constructed digital twin system successfully estimated the responses.

  • One of the most promising technologies that is raised from the fourth industrial revolution is Digital Twin (DT). A DT captures attributes and behaviors of the entity suitable for communication, storage, interpretation or processing within certain context. A digital twin based on microservice framework architecture is proposed in this paper which identifies elements required for the complete orchestration of microservice based Survival Analysis of Lung Cancer Patients. Integration of microservices and Digital Twin Technology is studied.

특허정보를 활용한 디지털 트윈 기술 동향 분석 및 기술융합기회 발굴 (Exploring Technology Development Trends and Discovering Technology Convergence Opportunities in the Digital Twin using Patent Information)

  • Digital twin is considered as a key technology of industry 4.0, thus being essential for the future of industrial production. Despite the significance, a systematic analysis of its technological landscape is lacking. This study aims to investigate the technological development trends and newly emerging technological convergence opportunities in the domain of digital twin by exploiting patent information derived from U SPTO. For this purpose, this study visualized and predicted the convergence dynamics among patent classification codes by adopting patent co-classification analysis and link prediction approach. The findings show that the number of digital twin-related patent applications has increased significantly since 2018. The CPC code G06F showed the highest eigenvector centrality, while G05B was characterized by highest betweenness centrality. According to the predictive model, 41 novel links were revealed, acting as potential technology convergence opportunities. These links were then categorized into 11 different domains. The most dominant category was "digital data processing and artificial intelligence", which could play a foundational role in the diffusion of digital twin technology. The presence of digital twin technology is dominant in manufacturing, but its applications are expected to expand, including "climate change", "healthcare" and "aerospace engineering". The derived insights can support R&D managers and policy makers in formulating R&D strategies and directing future R&D investment decisions.

  • 스마트 팩토리(Smart Factory) 고도화의 핵심으로 평가되는 디지털 트윈(Digital Twin)은 현실 세계의 자산과 동일한 속성 및 기능을 가지는 디지털 복제본을 가상의 세계에 구현하는 기술이다. 디지털 트윈 기술이 적용된 스마트팩토리는 생산공정의 실시간 모니터링, 생산공정 시뮬레이션, 생산설비 예지보전 등의 서비스를 지원할 수 있어 생산비용 절감 및 생산성 향상에 기여할 것으로 기대된다. AAS(Asset Administration Shell)는 디지털 트윈을 구현하기 위한 필수 기술로, 현실의 물리적 자산을 디지털로 표현하는 방법을 제공한다. 본 논문에서는 스마트팩토리 내 생산설비를 자산으로 간주하여, 운용 중인 실시간 CNC(Computer Numerical Control) 모니터링 시스템에서 활용할 제조 데이터 수집을 위한 AAS를 설계하였다.

재난 감시 디지털 트윈을 위한 UWB 실내 측위 및 실시간 원격제어 시스템 구현 (Implementation of UWB Indoor Positioning and Real-time Remote Control System for Disaster Monitoring based on Digital Twin)

  • Digital Twin, one of the core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, is attracting attention as a very suitable technology for disaster monitoring such as fires and earthquakes. In this paper, we implement a system equipped with UWB RTLS(Ultra-Wideband Real Time Location System), real-time remote control, and video streaming, which are element technologies for disaster monitoring digital twin. Since the proposed system structure is based on a cloud server, the actual location of the UWB indoor positioning-based client is transmitted to the user device in real time and stored on the cloud server for statistical and data analysis. In addition, we demonstrate through experiments that outliers occurs when the value of RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator) decreases due to communication collisions between UWB Tags, and propose an RSSI outlier correction algorithm to solve this problem.

  • Digital twin has the advantages of quality improvement and cost reduction, so it is widely applied to various industries. In this paper, a method to implement the major technologies of digital twin easily and quickly is presented. These include data management and relay servers, real-time monitoring applications including remote control interfaces, and direct connection protocols for video streaming. In addition, an algorithm for controlling a two-wheeled vehicle with a 2D interface is also proposed. The implemented system performs near real-time synchronization between the real environment and the virtual space. The delay time that occurs in remote control of the vehicle in the real environment was compared with the results of applying the proposed delay time reduction method. In addition, in the case of 2D interface-based control, an algorithm that can guarantee the user experience was implemented and applied to the actual environment and verified through experiments.

  • 2019년 발생한 코로나라는 팬데믹 영향의 장기화로 인해 사람들 간 접촉을 하지 않고도 생활이 가능한 비대면 활동의 중요성이 증대되면서 우리사회는 본격적인 언택트(untact) 시대로 진입하게 되었다. 언택트 시대는 우리의 일상생활뿐만 아니라 산업사회를 디지털화로 재편하는 거대한 구조적 변화를 초래하는데 영향을 미쳤는데, 그 중심의 핵심기술에 디지털트윈(digital twin)이 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 디지털트윈은 4차 산업혁명에 접목되고 있는 다양한 기술력을 융합하여 현실세계를 가상의 디지털 세계에 그대로 재현해내는 기술로, 다양한 산업 공정 전반에 관여하여 산업 사회에서의 혁신을 선도하고 있다. 그러나 디지털트윈이 갖는 구조적 한계 및 환경적 제약으로 인해 동 기술은 모든 산업 제반에 걸쳐 적극적으로 활용되고 있지는 않다. 특히 건축 및 시설물 분야는 일상에서 건물의 주기적 관리가 요구되고 재난 발생 시 인명피해와도 직결되는 분야이기 때문에 디지털트윈의 접목 필요성이 더욱 제기되고 있는 분야지만 현실적으로 직면한 사항들이 디지털트윈의 적용에 있어 장애물로 작용하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점에 착안하여 건축물 시설안전대응분야에서 디지털트윈 기술의 적용 필요성을 제시하고, 그로 인해 창출 가능한 기대효과를 기술함으로 디지털트윈의 적극적 활용을 강조한다. 더불어 디지털트윈이 현재 직면한 문제를 극복하고 향후 지속발전가능성이 높음을 시사하여 디지털트윈의 수요 창출을 견인하도록 연계짓는다.
