Counterproductive Work Behaviors and Narcissism (반생산적인 업무행동에 대한 자기애적 성격특성의 이해)

  • Counterproductive work behaviors are behaviors by employees intended to harm their organization or organization members. Human is the being has a desire and behaviors. To understand behaviors of an individual, it is important to understand the personality which determines a difference between individuals. Narcissists has psychological traits to be likely to experience negative emotions, such as frustration, hostility or anger, and this psychological traits of narcissists are more likely to induce an aggression. In this view, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between counterproductive work behaviors and narcissistic personality characteristics and to explore psychological dynamics about how narcissistic personality characteristics had an effect on counterproductive work behaviors. As a result, facts known were as follows. First, narcissists has strong desires to maintain a sense of superiority over others and defend their egos against unpleasant evaluation information, even if the information is factual and accurate. Second, narcissists are hyper-sensitive to negative information and are more likely to encounter information or situations that challenge their positive self-appraisals by this view. Third, in response to these challenges, or ego threats, these individuals are more likely to experience negative emotions, such as anger, frustration, or hostility. Forth, this negative emotions lead to aggression and as a result, this is more likely to induce counterproductive work behaviors such as theft, sabotage, interpersonal aggression, work slowdowns, wasting time and materials, and spreading rumors. Thus, narcissism is another individual difference variable that may be an important factor in determining counterproductive work behaviors, particularly under conditions perceived to be difficult or stressful.

Narcissists' Self-esteem and Hostility (자기애적 성격성향자의 자존감과 적대갑에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examined the relationships between the narcissism and the self-esteem, the hostility. In order to accomplish the above purpose, empirical research has executed. First, the narcissism, the self-esteem and the hostility was analyzed, and the subfactors of narcissism, the self-esteem and the hostility was. The major results from this study were as follows. (1) The narcissism had significantly a positive correlation to the self-esteem and the hostility, and both of the self-esteem and the hostility influenced of significantly the narcissism, especially the hostility influenced of the narcissism even more importantly. (2) The more narcissism showed the higher self-esteem overtly and the more hostility. (3) The all subfactors to except the self-centeredness of the narcissism had a positive correlation to the self-esteem, and the all subfactors of narcissism had a positive correlation to the hostility. (4) The most important narcissism personality traits which influenced of the self-esteem was the superiority, and the hostility the self-centeredness. Narcissists are motivated by the preference for being superior to others. That is, narcissists have an extreme emotional investment in establishing their superiority, even if they are unsure that their superiority is merited. therefore, it is possible for narcissists to have high self-esteem. But this is to defence the fragility of the vulnerable self structure. And, narcissists feel very much a sense of hostility in psychologically. Because they are hyper-sensitive to negative information, they will be more likely to encounter information or situations that challenge their positive self-appraisals. In response to these challenges, or ego threats, they will likely experience negative emotion, such as hostility.

The Relationship among Narcissism, Self-esteem, Hostility, Alienation and Delinquency (청소년의 자기애적 성격성향, 자존감, 적대감, 소외감과 비행성향간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was the examination of delinquency according to, narcissism, self-esteem, hostility and alienation of juvenile. For this, setting 172 students of an academic high school and 366 students of a vocational school(total 538) as the object of this study, the measures of Narcissistic Personality Scales, Self-Esteem Scales, Alienation Scales, and Delinquency Scales were inquired. The method of statistical analysis about these materials was composed of Two-way Analysis of Variance, One-way Analysis of Variance, and Multi-regression Analysis by using SPSS 10.0. The result, when delinquency was examined according to narcissism and self-esteem, in the case that narcissism was highest, self-esteem was lowest, delinquency was highest. When delinquency was examined according to narcissism and hostility, in the case that narcissism was highest, hostility was highest, delinquency was highest. When delinquency was examined according to narcissism and alienation, in the case that narcissism was highest, alienation was highest, delinquency was highest. And, when Multi-regression Analysis about the effect of narcissism, self-esteem, hostility and alienation on delinquency was administrated, the variation that affected delinquency significantly was narcissism, hostility and alienation. That is, we could look forward that the more narcissists feel hostility and alienation, the higher they have delinquency.

  • The psychiatry features of narcissism are molded by the outcome of a mismatch or lack of tension between the realistic self and the ideal self, and it is related to the problems of alienation. That is, the problems of alienation lead to the outcome of a mismatch between the realistic self and the ideal self by the unindividuality which lose a senses of the reality in all every things, and it make man to even more to give up the realistic self and to be alive powerlessness living. In this views, this study examined the relationship between narcissism and alienations or subfactors, and the concrete subscale of the Narcissistic Personality Scale which had a influence on the alienations to experientially investigate the relation between narcissism and alienations. Juveniles were administered both the Narcissistic Personality Scale and the Alienations Scale. The results showed a positive relationship between narcissism and alienations, and the alienations was influenced of the self-centeredness and the exploitation/Privilege subscale of the Narcissistic Personality Scale. Therefore, narcissists feel alienations too much, and the more a person has self-centeredness and exploitation/Privilege of narcissistic traits, the higher alienations is.

A study of relationships between narcissism and job stress (자기애적 성격과 직무스트레스와의 관계에 대한 고찰)

  • As the modern society is called the narcissistic society, the narcissism is widespread in the personality of individuals and the society at large. In consideration of this side, this study explored for several characteristics of the narcissistic personality and the job stress, and explored for the relationships between the two things theoretically. The narcissism is an attempt to repair self-esteem weakened by the splitting anxiety, the lack and the pathological fusion of self-structure. The job stress is a factor that a characteristic of the job influenced on the behavioral and affective response of the person on the job directly or indirectly. This study selected organizational justices, organizational constraints, role conflict, role ambiguity, role overload, organizational climate, interpersonal relations and career development as factors of the job stress. This study viewed that the stress is made from an interaction between environmental stimulus and personal particular reaction by defining the stress as an interaction model of stimulus-response and personal reaction is caused by psychological adjustment process, personal differences. On this occasion, this study discussed that the narcissistic personality is easy to get stress and weak in the job stress with regarding the personality as a mediation variation of psychological process. As a result, the narcissists estimated themselves positively and their self-esteem is high, but they excessively showed a self biased cognitive and affective response about the negative feedback to protect themselves. Moreover, this positive estimate on themselves and high self-esteem was vulnerable and weak in the self threat. In this view, the narcissistic personality is easy to get more job stress such as organizational justices, organizational constraints, role conflict, role ambiguity, role overload, organizational climate, interpersonal relations and career development.

Attitudes Towards Homecare Beauty Devices in Women in Correlation to Narcissism (여성의 자기애에 따른 홈케어 뷰티디바이스 이용 태도)

  • This study aims to provide data on attitudes towards the use of Homecare beauty devices in correlation to narcissism of women between ages 30-59. Through statistical analysis of 563 survey questions, data displayed that respondents' age, level of education, marital status, economic status, and career status showed a strong correlation with implicit narcissism, while explicit narcissism only showed a correlation with age and career status. The most popular skincare location was shown to be 'self-provided at home', and the most popular item purchased being 'galvanic devices'. Secondly, attitudes towards the use of homecare beauty devices in correlation towards implicit narcissistic respondents were only to the consideration of its use, while explicit narcissists displayed a strong correlation between the purchase of a product and the recommendation of others. While this is the first study on attitudes towards homecare beauty devices in relation to a personality-based trait like narcissism and it displayed meaningful results, a more in-depth study in the future dealing with a larger region and respondent groups of a wider age and gender group should be undertaken.

The Influence of Adolescent Narcissism on Interpersonal Relationships: Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Self-concept Clarity (청소년의 자기애가 대인관계에 미치는 영향: 자기개념 명확성의 매개효과)

  • The study aims to verify the influence of overt narcissism and covert narcissism in adolescents upon Interpersonal Relationship through self-concept clarify. Regular middle school students were surveyed over the period from November 4 to 22, 2019. A total of 470 questionnaires were used in the analysis for this study. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 statistics suites. The study results are as follows. First, the covert and overt narcissism of adolescents had a negative impact on the self-concept clarity. Second, the self-concept clarity of adolescents had a positive impact on interpersonal relationships. Third, the covert and overt narcissism of adolescents had a negative impact on interpersonal relationships. Fourth, in the relationship between adolescent overt/ covert narcissism and interpersonal relationship, self-concept clarity all had a significant mediating effect. This research has empirically demonstrated the influence of the self-concept clarity upon interpersonal relationship in relation to the overt and covert narcissism of adolescents, so that the study findings provide a wider understanding of the adolescents who have difficulties with Interpersonal Relationships while helping enhance expertise in the counseling and education curriculum based on the characteristics of narcissists.
