  • The responses of hypothetical silicon nanotubes under torsion have been investigated using an atomistic simulation based on the Tersoff potential. A torque, proportional to the deformation within Hooke's law, resulted in the ribbon-like flattened shapes and eventually led to a breaking of hypothetical silicon nanotubes. Each shape change of hypothetical silicon nanotubes corresponded to an abrupt energy change and a singularity in the strain energy curve as a function of the external tangential force, torque, or twisted angle. The dynamics of silicon nanotubes under torsion can be modelled in the continuum elasticity theory.

  • As the old saying 'nothing is complete unless you put it in final shape', although nanosheets (NSs) are a promising functional building block for various electrochemical applications, their true value cannot be realized until they are well woven into electrical conducting materials. As an effort to determine their ideal shape, in this study, a unique manufacturing route to build a layer-by-layer (LBL) structure of two-dimensionally ordered, free-standing ${\beta}$-nickel hydroxide nanosheets (${\beta}$-NHNSs) that are fully electrically addressed with single-wall carbon nanotube fabrics was demonstrated, and its capabilities were verified through a comparative study on the differences between a simple bulky and LBL-structured electrochemical cathode, representing two extreme cases. The LBL-structured cathode showed a discharging current peak that was 25 times larger than the bulky structured one measured in cyclic voltammetry, which implies that the LBL structure is near an ideal electrode configuration for NS-based electrochemical applications.

  • When concrete is exposed to fire, the decomposition of Portland cement paste results in critical damage to the concrete structure of a building. Although the behavior of cement pastes after heating provides crucial information with respect to the reuse of the building exposed to fire, the recovery process of the damaged concrete structure has not yet been fully elucidated. In addition, research on appropriate additives such as carbon nanotube (CNT) has been increasing recently, however, investigation of CNT incorporated cement paste after decomposition of CNT by high temperature is not fully investigated. In this study, we investigated the physicochemical properties of CNT incorporated cement paste under different temperatures (200℃, 500℃ and 800℃). Also, the effects of different rehydration conditions (20℃ 60% RH and in water for different curing times) on the recovery of the paste were studied. The changes in tensile and compressive strength, surface observation of the specimens were characterized. In addition, the decomposition and formation of hydrates in the paste due to the heating process were studied using X-ray diffraction.

The results showed that incorporation of nanosilica enhanced tensile strength after heating to each target temperatures.

  • Photocatalytic water splitting into $H_2$ and $O_2$ using semiconductors has received much attention, especially for its potential application to direct production of $H_2$ for clean energy from water utilizing solar light energy. Since the report of Fujishima and Honda on the water splitting by photoelectrochemical cells, numerous different semiconducting materials have been used as photocatalysts for hydrogen generation from water. Among them, platinized titania significantly accelerates hydrogen production from water. For geometrical improvement of $TiO_2$ particle, porous $TiO_2$ structure was proposed and studied such as nanofiber, nanorod and nototubes. This research focuses on finding out the optimum temperature and electrolyte to produce $H_2$ by solar water splitting.

  • This paper presents development of carbon nanotube (CNT) tip modified by focused ion beam (FIB) and experimental results in non-contact mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) using fabricated tip. We used an electric field which causes dielectrophoresis, to align and deposit CNTs on a conventional silicon tip. The morphology of the fabricated CNT tip was then modified into a desired shape using focused ion beam. We measured anodic aluminum oxide sample and trench structure to estimate the performance of FIB-modified tip and compared with those of conventional Si tip. We demonstrate that FIB modified tip in non contact mode had superior characteristics than conventional tip in the respects of wear, image resolution and sidewall measurement.

  • Recent developments of carbon nanotubes are reviewed[1,2,3,4]. We use Tersoff carbon potential for bonded interactions[5] and Lennard-Jones 12-6 potential for non bonding interactions[6]to describe mechanical properties of the temperature-dependent armchair single wall carbon nanotube. At first we report that through defect number and bonding energy calculation, how single wall carbon nanutube is capped in the constant temperature. (300K, 2000K, 3000K, 4000K) At second, we perform MD simulation, which are performed on the energy optimized structure of carbon nanotube.

  • To address the need for new intelligent sensing, this paper introduces nano sensors made of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites and presents their preliminary experiments. Having smart material properties such as piezoresistivity, chemical and bio selectivity, the nano composite can be used as smart electrodes of the nano sensors. The nano composite sensor can detect structural deterioration, chemical contamination and bio signal by means of its impedance measurement (resistance and capacitance). For a structural application, the change of impedance shows specific patterns depending on the structural deterioration and this characteristic is available for an in-situ multi-functional sensor, which can simultaneously detect multi symptoms of the structure. This study is anticipated to develop a new nano sensor detecting multiple symptoms in structural, chemical and bio applications with simple electric circuits.

  • Carbon nanotube is a geometrical frame-like structure and the primary bonds between two nearest-neighboring atoms act like beam members, whereas an individual atom acts as the joint of the related beam members. The sectional property parameters of these beam members are obtained from molecular mechanics. Computations of the elastic deformation of single-walled carbon nanotubes reveal that the Young's moduli of carbon nanotubes vary with the tube diameter and are affected by their helicity. With increasing tube diameter, the Young's moduli of carbon nanotubes approach the Young's modulus of graphite.
