In recent years, the emergence of nanotechnology and nanomaterial has created hopes to improve various properties of concrete. Nano silica as one of these materials has been introduced as a cement replacement material for concrete mixture in construction applications. It can modify the properties of concrete, due to high pozzolanic reactions and also making a denser microstructure. On the other hand, it is well recognized that the use of mineral admixtures such as silica fume affects the mechanical properties and durability of cementitious materials. In addition, the superior performance of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and self-consolidating mortars (SCM) over conventional concrete is generally related to their ingredients. This study investigates the effect of nano silica and silica fume on the compressive strength and chloride permeability of self-consolidating mortars. Tests include compressive strength, rapid chloride permeability test, water permeability, capillary water absorption, and surface electrical resistance, which carried out on twenty mortar mixtures containing zero to 6 percent of nano silica and silica fume. Results show that SCMs incorporating nano silica had higher compressive strength at various ages. In addition, results show that nano silica has enhanced the durability SCMs and reduced the chloride permeability.

The new PEI(poly(epoxy-imide))-nano Silica film has been synthesized via in situ CS sol process, and the chemical bonding and microstructure of nano silica dispersed in resin were examined by FT-IR, TAG and SEM. The dielectric properties of these hybrid films over a given temperature and frequency ranges have been studied in a point of view of stable chemical bonding of nano Silica filler. The results from IR spectra and SEM photograph indicated that PEI-Silica hybrid film prepared with nano CS sol process has been synthesized in uniform and chemical bonding. The decrease property of dielectric constant with CS content, tangent loss consistent of given frequency and temperature has been explained in terms of the chain movement of polymer through chemical bonging and size effect of nano silica. The new PEI-CS sol hybrid film with such stable chemical and dielectric properties was expected to be used as a high functional coating application in ET, IT and electric power products.
We prepared a working electrode (WE) with a blocking layer (BL) containing 0 ~ 0.5 wt% Ag nano powders to improve the energy conversion efficiency (ECE) of dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). FESEM and micro-Raman were used to characterize the microstructure and phase. UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy was employed to determine the adsorption of the WE with Ag nano powders. A solar simulator and a potentiostat were used to confirm the photovoltaic properties of the DSSC with Ag nano powders. From the results of the microstructural analysis, we confirmed that Ag nano powders with particle size of less than 150 nm were dispersed uniformly on the BL. Based on the phase and adsorption analysis, we identified the existence of Ag and found that the adsorption increased when the amount of Ag increased. The photovoltaic results show that the ECE became 4.80% with 0.3 wt%-Ag addition compared to 4.31% without Ag addition. This improvement was due to the increase of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the BL resulting from the addition of Ag. Our results imply that we might be able to improve the efficiency of a DSSC by proper addition of Ag nano powder to the BL.
Commercial nano crystalline $TiO_2$ powders were used to characterize photocatalyst, using thermal spray coating technique. The microstructure of coating layers were examined by SEM, FE-SEM and TEM. Also the cross sectional areas of TiO$_2$ coating layers were observed by SEM. The phases were analyzed by X-ray diffraction methed. Surface roughness and hardness were measured. It was found that phase transformation from anatase to rutile occurred, and the melted splats are all rutile, and unmeted nano particles were anatase. These unmelted anatase phase may enhance te play a role of photocatalyst.
Improvements are made to existing primitive cell volume measurement method to provide a real-time analysis capability for the phase analysis of nanocrystalline materials. Simplification is introduced in the primitive cell volume calculation leading to fast and reliable method for nano-phase identification and is applied to the phase analysis of Mo-Si-N nanocoating layer. In addition, comparison is made between real-time and film measurements for their accuracy of calculated primitive cell volume values and factors governing the accuracy of the method are determined. About 5% accuracy in primitive cell determination is obtained from camera length calibration and this technique is used to investigate the cell volume variation in WC-TiC core-shell microstructure. In addition to chemical compositional variation in core-shell type structure, primitive cell volume variation reveals additional information on lattice coherency strain across the interface.

It is important to know SIze distribution of defects In electroplated trivalent chrome layers because it significantly influences on performance of the layers. Most of the nano-scale defects are able to be introduced by hydrogen evolution during the plating. Little information is available on the nano-size defects. In this study, SANS was applied to determine the size distribution of nano-scale defects in the trivalent chrome layers prepared in a formate bath. The defect size and distribution was dependent upon plating conditions such as current density and applied voltage. SANS is one of useful techniques to determine the nano-scale defect in the electroplated layers.

We fabricated thermally-evaporated 10 nm-Ni/(poly)Si and 10 nm-$Ni_{0.5}Co_{0.5}$/(Poly)Si structures to investigate the microstructure of nickel silicides at the elevated temperatures required lot annealing. Silicides underwent rapid annealing at the temperatures of $600{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. Silicides suitable for the salicide process formed on top of both the single crystal silicon actives and the polycrystalline silicon gates. A four-point tester was used to investigate the sheet resistances. A transmission electron microscope and an Auger depth profilescope were employed for the determination of vortical microstructure and thickness. Nickel silicides with cobalt on single crystal silicon actives and polycrystalline silicon gates showed low resistance up to $1100^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$, respectively, while the conventional nickle monosilicide showed low resistance below $700^{\circ}C$. Through TEM analysis, we confirmed that a uniform, $10{\sim}15 nm$-thick silicide layer formed on the single-crystal silicon substrate for the Co-alloyed case while a non-uniform, agglomerated layer was observed for the conventional nickel silicide. On the polycrystalline silicon substrate, we confirmed that the conventional nickel silicide showed a unique silicon-silicide mixing at the high silicidation temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$. Auger depth profile analysis also supports the presence of this mixed microstructure. Our result implies that our newly proposed NiCo-alloy composite silicide process may widen the thermal process window for the salicide process and be suitable for nano-thick silicides.

In this study, the reflectivity characteristics of Ag nano-coating grown by electroless plating were investigated in order to use as the reflecting plate of BLU (Back Light Unit) in the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or LED (Light Emitting Diode) display equipment. The microstructure of Ag nano-coating was polycrystalline nano-structure that consisted of Ag nano-crystals to be reduced and precipitated, and the size of reduced nano-crystals increased as the thickness of nano-coating increased. The reflectivity of Ag nano-coating in the visible light decreased as the thickness of nano-coating increased and the reduction of reflectivity was more severe in the short wavelength region of visible light. The decrease of reflectivity was closely related to the size of Ag nano-crystal and was thought to be due to the larger surface roughness of larger nano-coating thickness. Therefore, the finer Ag nano-crystals and thinner nano-coating thickness could be favorable for the higher reflectivity of Ag nano-coating grown by electroless plating.
Development of Rotation-Cylinder Method(RCM) is given for Mg-Al-Zn-X(X=Sr) alloys, identifying some of the key factors that need to be controlled and indicating subsequent casting processes. Effects of Sr addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and T6 heat-treated Mg-Al-Zn-X alloys fabricated by the RCM were investigated. The microstructural and mechanical characterizations were performed by utilizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, hardness test and ultimate tensile test. The solution and aging treatment time was varied to optimize the T6 heat treatment conditions, and experimental results were discussed. The grain size of Sr containing alloys was refined by increasing Sr content, but the tensile and yield strengths were increased by addition up to 1wt% Sr.
