A thin film hydroxyapatite (HA) films was deposited on anodized titanium by RF sputtering method. The anodized titanium enhanced the biocompatibility of the Ti and the bioactivity was improved further by the HA deposited on the anodized Ti. $TiO_2$ layer with $0.2{\sim}0.5{\mu}$ diameter pore size was formed on the Ti surface by anodization. Anodized $TiO_2$ layer analysis HA film deposited, oxide pore size and number decreased compared with non-HA deposited surface. The corrosion resistance of HA deposited/anodized Ti was higher than that of the non-treatment Ti alloy in Hank's solution, indicating better protective effect. From the results of cell culture using MTT assays, the best cell proliferation showed in HA deposited surface after anodization of Ti surfaces compared with another surface treatment.
In this study, precipitation behaviors of hydroxyapatite on highly ordered nanotubular Ti-35Ta-xNb alloy surface were researched. Ta and Nb additions to Ti increased corrosion resistance. The surface characteristics of anodized alloy depended on the nanotube formed voltage and alloy element. The HA precipitation morphology was influenced by nanorubular structure of alloys.
In order to investigate on hydroxyapatite precipitation phenomena on nanotubular Ti-29Nb-xHf ternary alloys, Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys contained (0% to 15%) Hf were manufactured using arc melting furnace. Formation of nanotubular structure was achieved by an electrochemical method in 1M $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes containing 0.8%wt. % NaF. Electrochemical deposition was carried out using cyclic and voltammetry(CV) method at $85^{\circ}C$ in $5mM\;Ca(NO_3)_2+3mM\;NH_4H_2PO_4$. HA coating on nanotube formed Ti-29Nb-xHf ternary alloys showed a good wettability.
Process of the hydroxyapapite(HA) precipitation on bioactive titanium metal prepared by NaOH in a modified-simulated body fluid(mSBF) was investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) attached with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDX). The amorphous titanate phase on titanium surface is form by NaOH treatment and an amorphous titanate incorporated calcium and phosphate ions in the liquid to form an amorphous calcium phosphate. With increasing of soaking time in the liquid, the HA particles are observed in amorphous calcium phosphate phase with a Ca/P atomic ratio of I.30. The octacalcium phosphate (OCP) structure is not detected in HRTEM image and electron diffraction pattern. After a long soaking time, the HA particles grow as needle-like shape on titanium surface and a large particle-like aggregates of needle-like substance were observed to form on titanium surface within needle-like shape. A long axis of needle parallels to c-direction of the hexagonal HA structure.
Zn/HA coating on the Ti-xNb alloys after nanotube formation for dental lmplant was researched using various experimental methods. Due to g ood biocompatibility and osteoconductivity, hydroxyapatite (HA) coating s on metallic biomedical implants were widely employed in orthopedic and dental applications. To improve biocompatibilities, Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in the bone formation and immune reg ulations. The nanotube formed Zn-HA films were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
Purpose: This study evaluated histologically the tissue responses to and the effects of a customized nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) block bone graft on periodontal regeneration in a one-wall periodontal-defect model. Methods: A customized block bone for filling in the standardized periodontal defect was fabricated from prefabricated n-HA powders and a polymeric sponge. Bilateral $4{\times}{\times}4{\times}5$ mm (buccolingual width${\times}$mesiodistal width${\times}$depth), one-wall, critical-size intrabony periodontal defects were surgically created at the mandibular second and fourth premolars of five Beagle dogs. In each dog, one defect was filled with block-type HA and the other served as a sham-surgery control. The animals were sacrificed following an 8-week healing interval for clinical and histological evaluations. Results: Although the sites that received an n-HA block showed minimal bone formation, the n-HA block was maintained within the defect with its original hexahedral shape. In addition, only a limited inflammatory reaction was observed at sites that received an n-HA block, which might have been due to the high stability of the customized block bone. Conclusions: In the limitation of this study, customized n-HA block could provide a space for periodontal tissue engineering, with minimal inflammation.
In this study, we have investigated the surface morphology of hydroxyapatite (HA) coated Ti alloy surface using pulsed laser plating. The HA (tooth ash) films were grown by pulsed KrF excimer laser, film surfaces were analyzed for topology, chemical composition, crystal structure and electrochemical behavior. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy showed ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phase, Cp-Ti showed ${\alpha}$ phase and the HA coated surface showed HA and Ti alloy peaks. The HA coating layer was formed with $1-2{\mu}m$ droplets and grain-like particles, particles which were smaller than the HA target particle, and the composition of the HA coatings were composed of Ca and P. From the electrochemical test, the pitting potential (1580 mV) of HA coated Ti-6Al-4V alloy was higher than those of Cp-Ti (1060 mV) and HA coated Cp-Ti (1350 mV). The HA coated samples showed a lower current density than non-HA coated samples, whereas, the polarization resistance of HA coated samples showed a high value compared to non-HA coated samples.
Metallic biomaterials have been mainly used for the fabrication of medical devices for the replacement of hard tissue such as artificial hip joints, bone plates, and dental implants. Because they are very reliable on the viewpoint of mechanical performance. This trend is expected to continue. Especially, Ti and Ti alloys are bioinert. So, they do not chemically bond to the bone, whereas they physically bond with bone tissue. For their poor surface biocompatibility, the surface of Ti alloys has to be modified to improve the surface osteoinductivity. Recently, ceramic-like coatings on titanium, produced by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), have been developed with calciumand phosphorus-enriched surfaces. A lso included the influences of coatings, which can accelerate healing and cell integration, as well as improve tribological properties. However, the adhesions of these coatings to the Ti surface need to be improved for clinical use. Particularly Silicon (Si) has been found to be essential for normal bone, cartilage growth and development. This hydroxyapatite, modified with the inclusion of small concentrations of silicon has been demonstrating to improve the osteoblast proliferation and the bone extracellular matrix production. Strontium-containing hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA) was designed as a filling material to improve the biocompatibility of bone cement. In vitro, the presence of strontium in the coating enhances osteoblast activity and differentiation, whereas it inhibits osteoclast production and proliferation. The objective of this work was to study Morphology of bone-like apatite formation on Sr and Si-doped hydroxyapatite surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy after plasma electrolytic oxidation. Anodized alloys was prepared at 270V~300V voltages with various concentrations of Si and Sr ions. Bone-like apatite formation was carried out in SBF solution. The morphology of PEO, phase and composition of oxide surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were examined by FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the healing response of various Hydroxyapatite(HA) coated dental implants by Ion-Beam Assisted Deposition(IBAD) placed in the surgically created circumferential gap in dogs. Materials and methods: In four mongrel dogs, all mandibular premolars and the first molar were extracted. After an 8 weeks healing period, six submerged type implants were placed and the circumferential cylindrical 2mm coronal defects around the implants were made surgically with customized step drills. Groups were divided into six groups : anodized surface, anodized surface with 150nm HA and heat treatment, anodized surface with 300nm HA and heat treatment, anodized surface with 150nm HA and no heat treatment, and anodized surface with 150nm HA, heat treatment and bone graft, anodized surface with bone graft. The dogs were sacrificed following 12 weeks healing period. Specimens were analyzed histologically and histomorphometrically. Results: During the healing period, healing was uneventful and implants were well maintained. Anodized surface with HA coating and $430^{\circ}C$ heat treatment showed an improved regenerative characteristics. Most of the gaps were filled with newly regenerated bone. The implant surface was covered with bone layer as base for intensive bone formation and remodeling. In case that graft the alloplastic material to the gaps, most of the coronal gaps were filled with newly formed bone and remaining graft particles. The bone-implant contact and bone density parameters showed similar results with the histological findings. The bone graft group presented the best bone-implant contact value which had statistical significance. Conclusion: Within the scope of this study, nano-scale HA coated dental implants appeared to have significant effect on the development of new bone formation. And additional bone graft is an effective method in overcoming the gaps around the implants.
