  • The "Master Plan for the Revitalization of Water in the Nakdong River" is designed for the fundamental improvement of water quality in the Nakdong River. The water quality and flow of the Nakdong River system tributaries was monitored in this study. Among the living environmental standard parameters of 195 rivers, BOD (Biochemical oxygen demand), T-P (Total phosphorus) and TOC (Total organic carbon) were assessed to analyze the water quality from 2012 to 2019. We examined the role of TOC. It was found that 12 rivers exceeded the water quality of the second grade (3.0 mg/L BOD standard, 0.1 mg/L T-P standard, 4.0 mg/L TOC standard) based on BOD and T-P concentrations: the Gumi stream, Gisegok stream, Yongha stream, Yongho stream, Changnyeong stream, Gajwa stream, Gwangok stream, Yeongsan stream, Toerae stream, Hwapo stream, Sangnam stream and Hogye stream. These rivers require strategies to improve the quality of the Nakdong River. Based on the ongoing project, it is possible to supplement the "Master Plan for the Revitalization of Water in the Nakdong River" and manage it after verifying it as a component of people's life and therefore used to establish water quality control measures.

  • Water quality monitoring for flow rates and BOD/COD/T-N/T-P/SS/TOC concentrations has been conducted in Nakdong river tributaries since 2011. In this study concentrations and loading rates of BOD, T-P, and TOC were analyzed to evaluate water quality monitoring stations using accumulated data at 206 tributary monitoring stations in Nakdong river 2012 ~ 2016. Average concentration ranges for 206 monitoring stations were 0.3 ~ 6.4 mg/L, 0.025 ~ 1.562 mg/L, and 0.6 ~ 10.7 mg/L for BOD, T-P, and TOC, respectively. Additionally, average loading rate ranges were 0.96 ~ 46,040 kg/d, 0.087 ~ 1,834 kg/d, and 1.51 ~ 80,425 kg/d for BOD, T-P, and TOC, respectively. Average concentration for BOD, T-P, and TOC at each monitoring station was evaluated using ambient water quality standards of rivers and water quality regulation level for medium-sized management areas. Average loading rate and specific loading rate (loading rate/drainage basin area) for BOD, T-P, and TOC at each monitoring station was considered to evaluate monitoring stations using suggested classification (BOD, TOC: -1, 1 ~ 10, 10 ~ 100, 100 ~ 1,000, and 1,000 ~ kg/d; T-P: -0.1. 0.1 ~ 1, 1 ~ 10, 10 ~ 100, and 100 ~ kg/d) Using results of this study, various water quality status maps were provided, and three evaluation methods were suggested to determine priority monitoring stations in Nakdong river for rational water quality control and tributaries basin management.

  • Temporal increase of SS induces concentrations in various forms of organic matter including BOD, COD, TOC. Consequently, it causes hard to identify sources of water pollution during or after precipitation. The objective of this study is to investigate variations of DOC concentration caused by increase of flow and changes of external factors in river by comparing to SS concentration. In results, monitoring sites (e.g., Banbyeonchen) consisting of hard riverbed showed high correlation between SS and organic matters, except BOD. On the contrary, other sites (e.g., Naesungcheon) where riverbed consists of sand were found in a wide range of annual fluctuation in SS level, whereas these sites showed a narrow range in annual DOC fluctuation. In Gumhogang and Namgang, a lower correlation between SS and other factors was found most likely because of high concentration in organic matter. However, lower annual fluctuation values of DOC were observed in comparison to those of COD and TOC. Similar results were also confirmed in main river sites, Sangju and Mulgeum. In conclusion, DOC concentration is better indicator for monitoring organic matter which cannot be provided by BOD, COD, TOC in the Nakdong river basin.

  • As analyzed the estimated values of the daily delivery loads from thirteen major side streams such as Naesung-river, Keumho-river, Hwang-river, Nam-river during five years (from 1999 to 2003), the daily BOD inflow into the main stream of Nakdong river in 2003 shows the highest quantity as 31.1 ton and the daily BOD inflows in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 are 26.7 ton, 22.5 ton, 21.0 ton, 25.8 ton, respectively. The daily TN in-flow into the main stream of Nakdong river in 2003 shows also the highest quantity as 64.9 ton and the daily TN inflows in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 are 55.19 ton, 46.27 ton, 39.5 ton, 53.38 ton, respectively. The daily TP inflow into the main stream of Nakdong river in 2003 shows the highest quantity as 2.70 ton likewise and the daily TP inflows in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 are 2.17 ton, 1.87 ton, 1.60 ton, 2.10 ton, respectively The rate of BOD loads from each side main stream into the main stream of Nakdong river shows that the BOD loads of Keumho-river are the highest as the values range from 32.8 % (2002) ${\sim}$ 35.1 % (2003) and the BOD loads of Nam-river, Naesung-river, Hwang-river are high in the order named. The rate of TN loads to the main stream is also similar to the trend of BOD loads. The contribution of the TN loads of Geumho-river to the contamination of the main stream is also the highest having a range from 27.0 % (2002) to 28.8 % (1999) among the main side streams and the TN loads of Naesung-river, Nam-river, and Heachun-river are high in the order named. The rate of TP loads is quite different from the trend of BOD and TN loads. The TP rate of Keumho-river, however, is still the highest as ranging 58.6 % (2002) to 61.7 % (2003) and the river has the biggest portion (over 50%) of the entire pollution to the main stream of Nakdong river.

  • Deoxygenation process in which CBOD(carbonaceous BOD) is biochemically oxidized to reduced inorganic compounds is of great significance in the oxygen demand of stream waters. The CBOD decay rate has traditionally been determined in a laboratory by CBOD bottle incubation method. But in this study, CBOD decay rates were obtained by laboratory incubation method and natural waters experiment. Average CBOD decay rate for the Nakdong river(upper zone) in natural waters were 0.553 $day^{-1}$ during April 2005 to January 2007. The values in the middle and down parts of the Nakdong river in natural waters were 0.384 $day^{-1}$ and 0.252 $day^{-1}$ at the same period of time, respectively. Average CBOD decay rates using by incubation method in the upper/middle/down parts of the main stream in the Nakdong river basin was 0.270 $day^{-1}$, and 0.289 $day^{-1}$, and 0.283 $day^{-1}$ during April 2005 to January 2007, respectively.

  • The government has conducted a plan of total maximum daily loads(TMDL), which divides with unit watershed, for management of stable water quality target by setting the permitted total amount of the pollutant. In this study, BOD concentration trends over the last 10 years from 2005 to 2014 were analyzed in the Geumho river. Improvement effect of water quality throughout the implementation period of TMDL was evaluated using the seasonal Mann-Kendall test and a LOWESS(locally weighted scatter plot smoother) smooth. As a study result of the seasonal Mann-Kendall test and the LOWESS smooth, BOD concentration in the Geumho river appeared to have been reduced or held at a constant. As a result of quantitatively analysis for BOD concentration with exploratory data analysis(EDA), the mean and the median of BOD concentration appeared in the order of GH8 > GH7 > GH6 > GH5 > GH4 > GH3 > GH2 > GH1. The monthly average concentration of BOD appeared in the order of Apr > Mar > Feb >May > Jun > Jul > Jan > Aug > Sep > Dec > Nov > Oct. As a result of the outlier, its value was the most frequent in February, which is estimated 1.5 times more than July, and was smallest frequent in July. The outlier in terms of water quality management is necessary in order to establish a management plan for the contaminants in watershed.
