Amount of coastal ground water discharge(CGD) of surficial aquifer via coastlines of Nakdong River watershed, Seomjin River watershed, Youngsan River watershed and Keum River watershed is estimated. Compared to other major hydrological components, such as evapo-transpiration and river discharge, CGD is not so large in the amount. However, it is important since coastal ground water can be developed relatively free of environmental impact on downstream area and since most of coastal areas currently suffers water shortage. Regional groundwater investigation data and assessment based on Darcy's law are used for estimating coastal groundwater discharge. In this work the amount of CGD across the coastlines of the four rivers is estimated as 1.8 billion cubic meter per year and that is about 2.3 percentage of total amount of annual precipitation. Nakdong River watershed is most appropriate region in view of developing groundwater.
The estimations of flow characteristics and river-bed erosion or sedimentation are very important for hydraulic structure design, floodplain management, and especially, river management. The objective of the study is therefore to estimate the change of flow characteristics and river-bed change due to a hydraulic structure construction. With 11.65 km study area of the Geum River which are located in downstream of Daecheong Dam, flow characteristics and river-bed change were estimated based on the RMA2 and SED2D model. As the result of the study, the increase of river-bed sedimentation in upstream and river-bed erosion in downstream were occurred by the construction of hydraulic structure.
Supplying clean and safe water to people is facing both quantitative and qualitative challenges. Due to climate change, access to freshwater becomes increasingly difficult, while pollution from various sources decreases the public trust in water quality. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) which stores and uses surface water in aquifer is receiving attention as a new technology to secure freshwater. Recently, there is a global expansion in the attempt to combine general purification plants and hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) which manages all the process from raw material to consumer for food safety. This research is about an attempt to apply HACCP to the drinking water supply process using MAR to secure both quantity and quality of drinking water. The study site is a MAR plant being constructed in the downstream area of the Nakdong River Basin, South Korea. The incorporation of HACCP with MAR-based water supply system is expected to enhance the safety and reliability of drinking water.

Wetland is the ecotone between aquatic ecosystem and land ecosystem, and is much valuable in terms of ecology and economic. The stream wetland among inland fresh wetlands occupies the largest area but has been recognized as only a channel not a habitat. The purposes of this paper are to consider the characteristics of natural wetlands formed in the tributary flowing into the downstream reach of Nakdong River and to find its optimal management policy. Natural wetlands in the middle-size streams (2nd${\sim}$3rd order) are large marshlands, and were formed at the places from the mainstream away, because natural wetlands were formed in the reach of longitudinal profiles during the last glacial and the post-glacial period meet in disharmony. In order to conserve these natural wetlands effectively, we should compile the inventories of wetlands and make precise distribution maps. And we should do 'reverse-reclamation' which means the alteration of some farmlands reclaimed from natural wetland into natural wetland ecosystem, and develop the place or the space for wildlife education and ecotourism.
The Gobiobotia naktongensis is a species endemic to Korea, and it has recently been designated as a class I endangered species of freshwater fish. Naeseong Stream, one of the tributaries of the Nakdong River, where the Gobiobotia naktongensis was first discovered, provided an optimal habitat for the Gobiobotia naktongensis in the past with fine sand beds and riffle. Currently, due to the construction of Yeongju Dam and the excessive dredging of river channels by the local government, the riverbed armoring in the downstream area of the dam is undergoing rapid changes, and as a result, the habitat environment of the Gobiobotia naktongensis is deteriorating. In this study, the variations of the habitat suitability of the Gobiobotia naktongensis due to the change in the riverbed grain size of the Naeseong Stream were analyzed based on the WUA (weight usable area) using the physical habitat model, River2D. The study domain is the reach from Seoktap Bridge to Hoeryong Bridge downstream of Yeongju Dam. The change in riverbed grain size was analyzed using D50 acquired in 2010 and 2020, respectively. The substrate grain size of Naeseong Stream in 2020 was thicker than that in 2010, and the riverbed coarsening phenomenon was evident overall. As a result of the River2D analysis, the area in which the Gobiobotia naktongensis could inhabit was only about 0.75% in 2010 compared to the entire area of the flow, and even this decreased to 0.55% in 2020 due to riverbed armoring.
Samples (river water, tap water, soil, sediment, fish and shellfish) collected in Downstream Area of Nakdong River were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides by G.C. equipped with electron capture detector. Residue levels of organochlorine pesticides in the river water and tap water ranged from less than detection limit (ND) to 56ppt. Total BHC concentration in the river water and tap water were found to increase in summer and decrease in winter. The variation appeared to be related to rain fall. ${\alpha}-BHC\;and\;{\beta}-BHC$ concentration in the soil were ND-3.3ppb and ND-769.7ppb, respectively. ${\alpha}-BHC\;and\;{\beta}-BHC$ concentration in the sediment were ND-2.0ppb and ND-409.9ppb, respectively. Concentration factor of total BHC in the sediment ranged from 83 to 3213. In fish, Carasssus carassius and shellfish, Anodonta woodiana(Lea) the concentration factor of ${\beta}-BHC$ and total BHC were 2,609, 435 and 3,261, 375, respectively.
Acoustic telemetry is used to obtain a relatively continuous record of fish movement. This method has several advantages for studying migrating fish populations that are moving from large rivers. The Nakdong River is the longest river in South Korea and the main stream has faced a change, which consists of the installation of the large weirs. In this study, we applied acoustic telemetry to monitor the movement pattern of Erythroculter erythropterus (family Cyprinidae) and identified home range and movement distance in the Nakdong River. A total of fourteen individuals were released at three different locations and around 80 km section from the estuary barrage was investigated. Eight individuals were tagged and released at estuary barrage (N02) utilized up to 15.9 km (home range) upstream from the release site as home range. Four individuals were tagged and released at Samrangjin (N07), most fish moved and stayed within 9.7 km (home range) downstream area, except E12, which did not show any movement. Two individuals were tagged and released at Changnyeong-Haman weir (N10), and all individuals migrated downstream from the release site. Especially, E14 recorded the longest accumulated detected distance, 36.7 km downstream during 32 days after release. There was no correlation identified between movement (accumulated detected distance and home range) and standard length (Spearman rank correlation, p>0.05). Although, this technique could be an available method to monitor behavior and ecology of freshwater fish effectively, increment of number of receivers and tags are required for more detailed results of fish migration.
Due to the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project, Nakdong River Estuary Barrage's designed flood quantity has been largely increased, and this has caused to construct several drainage gates at the right side of Eulsukdo island to secure the safety of downstream river area. For successful functioning of Nakdong River Estuary Barrage, such as flood control, disaster prevention, and the securing of sufficient water capacity, drainage gates at the both sides of island have to operate systematically and reliably. To manage this under restricted personnel and resources, we have implemented the IOS (Integrated Operation System) by integrating previous facilities and resources via information and communication technologies. The IOS has been designed to have higher availability and fault tolerance to function continuously even with the partial system's failure under the emergency situation like flood. Operators can use the system easily and acknowledge alarms of facilities through its IWS (Integrated Warning System) earlier. Preparing for Integrated Water Resources Management and Smart Water Grid, the architecture of IOS conformed to open system standards which will be helpful to link with the other systems easily.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of greenhouse cultivation area and groundwater level changes due to the water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complexes, which are mainly situated along rivers where water resources are easy to secure. The groundwater observation network in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, located downstream of the Nakdong River, was selected for the study area. We classified the groundwater monitoring well into the greenhouse (riverside) and field cultivation areas (plain and mountain) to compare the groundwater impact of water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complex. The characteristics of groundwater level changes classified by terrain type were analyzed using the observed data. Riverside wells have significant permeability coefficients and are close to rivers, so they are greatly affected by river flow and precipitation changes so that water level shows a specific pattern of annual changes. Most plain wells do not show a constant annual change, but observation wells near small rivers and small-scale greenhouse cultivation areas sometimes show annual and daily changes in which the water level drops during winter. Compared to other observation wells, mountain wells do not show significant yearly changes in water level and show general characteristics of bedrock aquifer well with a low permeability coefficient.

This study aimed to analyze the impact of water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complexes on groundwater's electric conductivity and water temperature. The greenhouse complexes are mainly situated along rivers to secure water resources for water curtain cultivation. We classified the groundwater monitoring well into the greenhouse (riverside) and field cultivation areas (plain) to compare the groundwater impact of water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complex. The groundwater observation network in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, located downstream of the Nakdong River, was selected for the study area. As a result of analyzing the electric conductivity and water temperature, the following differences were found in the observed characteristics by region. 1) The electric conductivity and water temperature of the riverside area, where the permeability is high and close to rivers, showed a constant pattern of annual changes due to the influence of river flow and precipitation. 2) The flat land in general agricultural areas showed general characteristics of bedrock observation in the case of water temperature. Still, it seemed more affected by the surrounding well's water use and water quality. The electric conductivity did not show any particular trend and was influenced by the surrounding environment according to the location of each point.
