The effects of complex Korean medicine treatment including acupotomy, on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are reported in this case study. A 54-year-old woman with diarrheal symptoms that alternatively improved and worsened for many years and worsening abdominal pain visited the emergency room and was diagnosed with IBS; she was admitted for approximately 2 weeks at the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Department of National Medical Center (NMC). Numerical rating scale (NRS), irritable bowel syndrome-quality of life (IBS-QOL), and gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS) scores were evaluated on the day of hospitalization, midway through the hospitalization period, and on the day of discharge. Abdominal pain was measured daily using NRS, and the score decreased from 8 at admission to 0 at discharge. The IBS-QOL percentile score improved from 42 points to 100 points. The total GSRS score also improved, from 30 points to 2 points. These results suggest that complex Korean medicine treatment with acupotomy, is useful for treating internal diseases, such as IBS, as well as musculoskeletal disorders.

This report presents the clinical progress of a 50-year-old male diagnosed with a left acetabular fracture and left rib fracture after falling from a height of 3 m. The patient was treated nonsurgically and underwent complex traditional Korean medicine (TKM) treatment and rehabilitation, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, bee venom, herbal medicine, physiotherapy, and moxibustion. Patient progress was assessed using the numerical rating scale (NRS), manual muscle test (MMT), and modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS). During 113 days of hospitalization, the NRS score decreased from 7 to 3, and the MMT grade increased to normal in the hip, knee, and ankle joints. The mHHS score increased from 26 to 99 points. Radiographs and computed tomography scans of the left acetabulum were obtained periodically, and fracture union was successfully achieved. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of complex TKM treatment and rehabilitation of acetabular fractures.

Objectives The aim of this study is to observe the effectiveness of complex Korean medicine treatment applied to the patients with degenerative meniscal tear and the correlation among clinical effectiveness, body mass index (BMI) and Kellgren-Lawrence grade (KL-grade). Methods The study participants were 38 patients who had been diagnosed with degenerative meniscal tear. Participants were classified by BMI, KL-grade and treated with acupuncture, electroacupuncture and pharmacopuncture. Clinical outcomes were assessed using Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC Index) and EuroQol-5 Dimension Index (EQ-5D Index). Results Both NRS and WOMAC scores were significantly reduced after treatment (p<0.001). The EQ-5D for assessing quality of life showed further improvement (p<0.05). A statistically significant correlation was observed between the BMI and NRS, EQ-5D. KL-grade was correlated with WOMAC. Conclusions These results show that complex Korean medicine treatment to the patient with degenerative meniscal tear may be effective as a conservative therapy. Further research is required to confirm the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a Korean medicine treatment on a traumatic spinal cord injury. Metohds : A 44-year-old male patient who had suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury was treated for two months. The effectiveness of complex Korean medicine treatments was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and the Manual Muscle Test (MMT). Result : We found that the NRS of pain caused by numbness was decreased from 7 to 0-1, and the overall motor measured by the MMT was also improved. The patient's walking state was changed from wheelchair ambulation to walker ambulation. Conclusion : Based on this finding, complex Korean medicine treatments may be effective in treating patients' pain, controlling paresthesia, and aiding the recovery function of activities in daily living. However, because of the limitation of our study, further high-quality research should be conducted.

Objectives To report two patients with distal raidus fracture after a traffic accident improved by the complex of Korean medical admission treatment. Methods We collected data from April 2019 to October 2019. We surveyed the validity of the treatment with the range of motion (ROM), the European quality of life-5 dimension (EQ5D) and a numerical rating scale (NRS) at admission, two weeks, and discharge date of hospitalization. Results At the end of treatment, both patients had increased ROM, EQ5D and reduced NRS scores. Conclusions After the Korean medicine admission treatment, two patients showed to have been effective.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic and recurrent upper gastrointestinal symptom that has no organic cause. A 49-year-old male patient positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) visited the clinic because of FD and constipation. He received complex Korean medicine treatment, including acupuncture and herbal medicines, from April 14 to July 18, 2022 (27 times) in the outpatient department. Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), Nepean Dyspepsia Index (NDI), FD-related quality of life (FD-QoL), Euro QoL visual analog scale (EQ-VAS), and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) were used as evaluation tools in this study. Symptoms were relieved after 3 months of treatment, and his QoL improved (GSRS, 15-3; NDI, 110-21; FD-QoL, 52-20 [eating status, 10-3; liveliness status, 12-8; psychological, 1-0; role-functioning status, 18-9]; EQ-VAS, 40-65; NRS, 8-4). The results revealed that complex Korean medicine treatment could alleviate FD and constipation in patients with HIV.

Objectives: This report presents the case of a 21-year-old woman with lower extremity paresthesia in both feet due to polyneuropathy. Methods: The patient was treated using a Korean traditional complex treatment approach that included herbal medication, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and moxibustion. We evaluated the improvements in the pain symptoms in both feet using the numeric rating scale (NRS); we also assessed for gait disturbance and used Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging (D.I.T.I.) to evaluate minute changes in body temperature in diseased areas. Results: After administering the Korean traditional complex treatment, we observed a decrease in pain levels in both feet based on the NRS scores. We also observed improvements in gait disturbance and D.I.T.I. Conclusions: This case showed that the use of a Korean traditional complex treatment approach, consisting of herbal medication, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, moxibustion, had a positive effect on decreasing polyneuropathy symptoms.

Herein, we report the effectiveness of Korean medicine for the treatment of postherpetic upper limb weakness and pain. The patient received a combination of Korean medicine treatment modalities, including electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine. Muscle strength and pain were evaluated using a manual muscle test (MMT) and a Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), respectively. The overall MMT score improved after hospitalization, and elbow extension improved from 3+ at admission to 5 at discharge. The NRS score improved to 2 at discharge. This study suggests the effectiveness of a combination of Korean medicine modalities in treating postherpetic motor nerve paralysis.

Objectives This study aimed to assess the role of complex Korean medicinal treatment with Chuna manual therapy in two patients with chronic pain after posterior lumbar fusion surgery. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on 2 patients postoperatively based on their medical records. The surgery regions were verified using T2-weighted axial magnetic resonance imaging. Patients with chronic pain after spondylolisthesis posterior lumbar fusion surgery received complex Korean medicinal treatment with Chuna manual therapy during hospitalization. Numeric rating scale (NRS) in the degree of 0-10 and Oswestry disability index (ODI) were measured before and after treatment. Results Case 1 had an improved NRS score from 7 to 4, and Case 2 had an improved NRS score from 7 to 5. In addition, ODI score improved in both cases. Conclusions Complex Korean medicinal treatment with Chuna manual therapy is effective for relief from chronic pain after posterior lumbar fusion surgery.

Objectives : This case report describes the management of five patients suffering from nonstructural scoliosis with lumbar herniated intervertebral disc all treated with complex Korean medicine treatment. Methods : Five patients were hospitalized and treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, cupping, and Chuna manual therapy. Patients were assessed for Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), EuroQol-FiveDimensions (EQ-5D), and Cobb's angle. Results : In all patients, NRS, ODI, and Cobb's angle decreased, while the EQ-5D score increased. Conclusions : As seen in these five cases, complex Korean medicine treatment with Chuna manual therapy has effects on the management of nonstructural scoliosis.
