  • NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Baseline controller conduct using method proposed RISO National Laboratory in Region 3. which designed the blade-pitch control system using a single degree-of-freedom model of the wind turbine. Idealized PID-Controlled rotor-speed error will respond as a second-order system with the natural frequency and damping ratio. RISO proposed specific natural frequency(=0.6 rad/s) and damping ratio(=0.7). If specific Eigen value apply to NREL 5 MW wind turbine, differ with pitch respond for simulation results of RISO report. Variation of specific eigen value investigate performance of NREL 5 MW wind turbine.

  • The purpose of this work is to compare and analyze computed results with experimental data of NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Phase VI for the whole operating conditions of various wind speeds using $\kappa-\omega$ turbulence model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Performance results such as power coefficient, shaft torque, pressure coefficient show a good agreement with experimental data. But, root bending moment is over-predicted than the experimentally measured value by about 30% for the whole operating conditions because of indefinite measurement reference. Nevertheless, these results qualitatively show a good tendency in the aspect of aerodynamic performance. As wind speed increases, streamlines on the surface of blade show more and more complex pattern.

  • A comparison study between computational-fluid-dynamics simulation and wind tunnel test for a megawatt-class wind turbine is conducted. For the study, flow-field in wake, basic aerodynamic performance, and effect of the yaw error for a 1/86 scaled-down model of the NREL offshore 5 MW wind turbine are numerically calculated using commercial software "FloEFD" with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The computed results are compared to the wind tunnel test performed by the constant-velocity mode for the model. It is shown that discrepancy are found between the two results at lower tip-speed ratio and higher yaw angle, however, the velocity-defection distribution in the wake, the torque coefficient at moderated and high tip-speed ratios are in good agreement with the wind tunnel test.

  • The paper is focusing on investigating the control characteristics of the baseline controller of 5 MW wind turbine provided by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). The baseline controller consist of two control logics, a maximum power tracking control below the rated wind speed and a constant power control above the rated wind speed. In the low wind speed, the mean generator power for changing the turbulent intensity and the optimal constant is studied through numerical simulations using FAST program. On the other hand, the constant power control logic and the constant control logic are compared in the high wind speed. It is confirmed that optimal constant is closely related to the turbulent intensity in low wind speed region and the constant torque control has better performance than the constant power control with respect to mechanical load in high wind speed region.

  • The purpose of this work is to predict the low frequency aero-acoustic noise generated from the horizontal axis wind turbine, NREL Phase VI for the whole operating conditions of various wind speeds using large eddy simulation and Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Because there is no experimental data about wind turbine noise, we first of all compared aerodynamic performance such as shaft torque and power with experimentally measured value. Performance results show a good agreement with experimental data within about 0.8%. As the wind speed increases, the overall sound pressure level and the sound pressure level by the quadrupole and dipole source show a increasing tendency. Also, sound pressure level is proportional to $r^{-2}$ in the near field and $r^{-1}$ in the far field according to the increase of distance from the center of hub of wind turbine. According to 2 times increase of distance, sound pressure level is reduced by about 6dB.

  • In this study, wind loads exerted on the offshore wind turbine rotor in parked condition were predicted with variations of wind speeds, yaw angles, azimuth angle, pitch angles, and power of the atmospheric boundary layer profile. The calculated wind loads using blade element theorem were compared with those of estimated aerodynamic loads for the simplified blade shape. Wind loads for an NREL's 5 MW scaled offshore wind turbine rotor were also compared with those of NREL's FAST results for more verification. All of the 6-component wind loads including forces and moments along the three axis were represented on a non-rotating coordinate system fixed at the apex of rotor hub. The calculated wind loads are applicable for the dynamic analysis of the wind turbine system, or obtaining the over-turning moment at the foundation of support structure for wind turbine system.

  • One-layer solar radiation(GWNU; Gangneung-Wonju National University) model is developed in order to resolve the lack of vertical observations and fast calculation with high resolution. GWNU model is based on IQBAL(Iqbal, 1983) and NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory) methods and corrected by precise multi-layer LBL(Line-by-line) model. Input data were used 42 atmospheric profiles from Garand et al.(2001) for calculation of global radiation by the Multi-layer and one-layer solar radiation models. GWNU model has error of about -0.10% compared with LBL model while IQBAL and NREL models have errors of about -3.92 and -2.57%, respectively. Global solar radiation was calculated by corrected GWNU solar model with satellites(MODIS, OMI and MTSAT-1R), RDPS model prediction data in Korea peninsula in 2009, and the results were compared to surface solar radiation observed by 22 KMA solar sites. All models have correlation($R^2$) of 0.91 with the observed hourly solar radiation, and root mean square errors of IQBAL, NREL and GWNU models are 69.16, 69.74 and $67.53W/m^2$, respectively.
