  • This study was carried out to investigated the influence of methionine addition on quality of pork carcasses, 48 crossbred pigs were alloted to 4 treatments, NRC methionine requirement(A), additions of 0.035%(B), 0.07%(C) and 0.105%(D) to NRC methionine requirement. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Cut meats were not significantly affected by methionine levels. But the treatment C showed slightly higher than the other treatments. 2. Chemical compositions of cut meats were not different from treatments. However, the treatment D showed slightly higher moisture, crude fat ands ash contents than other treatments. And crude protein content was better in treatment C than the other treatments. 3. There was no significant difference the among treatments, the best value of water bolding capacity was recorded with the treatment C, and pH value of the treatment A and D Increased as compared with the treatment B and C.

  • A small integral reactor SMART (System Integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor), being developed in Korea since late 1990s and targeted to obtaining a standard design approval by the end of 2011, is introduced. The design scope and level for design certification (DC) is well described in the U.S. NRC SECY documents published the early 1990s. However, the documents are valid for a one-step licensing process called a combined operating license (COL) by the U.S. NRC, while Korea still uses a two-step licensing process. Thus, referencing the concept of the SECY documents, we have established the design scope and level for the SMART DC using the contexts of the standard review plan (SRP). Some examples of the results and issues raised during our review are briefly presented in this paper. The same methodology will be applied to other types of reactor under development in Korea, such as future VHTR reactors.

  • A brief introduction to NRC's research activities will be given with special emphasis on membrane processes. NIRC's membrane research group has been involved in many membrane research projects with industrial clients in various sectors of the industry. These projects generally were focused on using membranes for treating industrial wastewater streams for recycling process water, recovering of valuable components and meeting the environmental regulations. The group looked in to various aspects of process development dealing with membrane performance evaluation, optimization of operational parameters, determination of fouling propensities of membranes and simple cost analyses in some cases. Case studies dealing with process development for effluent treatment for the pulp & paper, mining & mineral processing and poultry processing industries will be discussed briefly.

  • Here we report on the first results of sensitivity evaluation of the gadolinium-aluminum-gallium- garnet (GAGG) scintillation detector with SiPM readout to fast and slow neutrons and, to the natural background and Co-60 γ-radiation as well. Data on sensitivity were obtained using certified dosimetry benches, so it can be utilized in the calculation of detection limits of neutron flux with such type of detectors. It was concluded that use of GAGG scintillator has a good prospect for neutron monitoring in different parts of nuclear research reactors and power plants.

  • FRAPCON-3.4a and FRAPTRAN 1.4 are the most recent versions of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) steady-state and transient fuel performance codes, respectively. These codes have been assessed against separate effects data and integral assessment data and have been determined to provide a best estimate calculation of fuel performance. Recent updates included in FRAPCON-3.4a include updated material properties models, models for new fuel and cladding types, cladding finite element analysis capability, and capability to perform uncertainty analyses and calculate upper tolerance limits for important outputs. Recent updates included in FRAPTRAN 1.4 include: material properties models that are consistent with FRAPCON-3.4a, cladding failure models that are applicable for loss-of coolant-accident and reactivity initiated accident modeling, and updated heat transfer models. This paper briefly describes these code updates and data assessments, highlighting the particularly important improvements and data assessments. This paper also discusses areas of improvements that will be addressed in upcoming code versions.

  • In the early 1980s, attention focused on the possibility that pressurized thermal shock (PTS) events could challenge the integrity of a nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) because operational experience suggested that overcooling events, while not common, did occur, and because the results of in-reactor materials surveillance programs showed that RPV steels and welds, particularly those having high copper content, experience a loss of toughness with time due to neutron irradiation embrittlement. These recognitions motivated analysis of PTS and the development of toughness limits for safe operation. It is now widely recognized that state of knowledge and data limitations from this time necessitated conservative treatment of several key parameters and models used in the probabilistic calculations that provided the technical of the PTS Rule, 10 CFR 50.61. To remove the unnecessary burden imposed by these conservatisms, and to improve the NRC's efficiency in processing exemption and license exemption requests, the NRC undertook the PTS re-evaluation project. This paper provides a synopsis of the results of that project, and the resulting Alternate PTS rule, 10 CFR 50.61a.

  • This paper presents tile results of experimental studies of the isolated Model EDG Systems. For the experimental work, the scaled model of EDG system and the isolation systems were developed. The target EDG model is 16PC2-5V400 which was manufactured by the SEMT Pielstick corporation. The Coil Spring and Viscous Damper Systems were selected for the isolation system. The Coil Spring and Viscous Damper systems can reduce not only seismic forces but also the operating vibration. For the input seismic motions, the scenario earthquake and the artificial earthquakes which were developed as NRC design spectrum and Uniform hazard Spectrum(UHS) were selected. As a result, at least 20% of seismic forces were decreased as the isolation system.

  • We perform the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram analysis to protostars identified by the JCMT Transient Survey, which monitors 8 nearby star forming regions. The observations have been done monthly for over 3 years using SCUBA-2 (the Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array 2) in two wavelengths, 450 and $850{\mu}m$. Under the threshold of 1% False Alarm Probability, we found 16 variable sources including EC53, which is the first variable protostar detected by the JCMT Transient Survey. Most of the variable sources are cataloged as protostars (classified via the Spitzer data, Megeath et al. 2012; Dunham et al. 2015), but SerpS-MM19, which has a clear 1-year period, is a candidate of a first hydrostatic core (Maury et al. 2011; Young et al. 2018).
