Prediction of Gas Permeability by Molecular Simulation

  • The research and development of high-performance polymer materials with excellent gas barrier properties has gained considerable attention from the viewpoint of expanding their applications in various fields, including tire automobile parts and the polymer film industry. Natural rubber (NR) has been widely used as a rubber material in real-life, but its application is limited owing to its poor gas barrier properties. In this paper, we study the gas barrier properties of NR, epoxidized natural rubber (ENR), and their blend compositions by using molecular simulation. The results show that ENR-50 has superior oxygen barrier properties than those of NR. Moreover, the oxygen barrier properties of a blend of NR/ENR-50 improve with increasing volume fraction of ENR-50. The trend of improved oxygen barrier properties of NR, ENR-50, and their blend is in good agreement with experimental observations.

Characterization of Chlorinated NR using Pyrolytic Technique

  • Vehicle wiper blades are typically treated with chlorine to lower their friction coefficient with the windshield surface. In this study, a chlorinated, natural rubber (NR) vehicle wiper blade was characterized using a pyrolytic technique. Unchlorinated and chlorinated wiper blades were pyrolyzed and the pyrolysis products were analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Besides isoprene and dipentene, the other principal pyrolysis products such as 1,5,8-p-menthatriene (MTT) and p,α-dimethylstyrene (DMS) were observed. The MTT and DMS ratios did not vary for the chlorinated nor unchlorinated samples when the entire rubber lip of the wiper blade was pyrolyzed. However, when only the lip surface of the wiper blade rubber was pyrolyzed (via scratching with a knife) the relative ratios of the chlorinated sample were much greater than those of the unchlorinated sample. As MTT is produced from the conjugated backbone of chlorinated NR that forms through HCl elimination during initial pyrolysis, and DMS is generated by the dehydrogenation of MTT, these two products could be used as markers for detecting chlorinated NR.

황과 레졸로 가교된 천연고무 가교물의 특성 (Characterization of NR Vulcanizates Cured by Both Sulfur and Resole)

  • 황과 레졸로 가교된 천연고무 배합물의 가황 특성과 가교물의 물리적 특성을 연구하였다. 분자량 분포가 다른 2가지 레졸을 사용하였다. 분자량 분포도가 낮은 레졸이 포함된 배합물의 스코치 시간은 분자량 분포도가 높은 레졸이 포함된 배합물에 비해 빠르다. 레졸 함량이 높은 가교물의 가교밀도는 $95^{\circ}C$ 열노화 후 감소한 반면, 레졸이 없는 가교물의 경우에는 열노화 후 가교 밀도가 증가하였다. 레졸 함량이 높은 가교물의 가교 밀도는 노화 시간이 길어질수록 감소하지만 모듈러스는 증가하고 인장 강도와 인열 강도는 감소한다.

실리카 및 카본블랙이 충전된 천연고무 가황물에서 배합방법이 파열특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Mixing Mode on the Fracture Properties of Silica and Carbon Black Filled NR Vulcanizates)

  • 충전물의 함량비 및 배합방법을 달리하여 실리카/카본블랙 충전 천연고무 가황물을 제조하였다. 충전물의 함량은 고무에 대해 70 phr이 되도록 하였으며, 이들을 동시에 배합하여 제조한 가황물과 실리카를 먼저 배합하고 일정 시간 경과 후 카본블랙을 배합하여 제조한 가황물의 가황특성, 모폴로지, 그리고 인열특성 및 크랙성장속도 등의 파열특성을 비교하였다. 가공시, 단계배합물은 동시배합물보다 경화 속도($t_{90}$ )는 약간 느렸으나, 긴 유도시간($t_2$), 낮은 최대 토오크 값($T_{max}$ )을 보였다. 단계 배합물은 인열특성 및 크랙성장 특성에 있어서도 상대적으로 우수함을 보였으며, 실리카의 함량이 30 phr인 경우에 가공성 및 파열 특성이 가장 우수하였다.

The Nuclear Orphan Receptor NR4A1 is Involved in the Apoptotic Pathway Induced by LPS and Simvastatin in RAW 264.7 Macrophages

  • Macrophage death plays a role in several physiological and inflammatory pathologies such as sepsis and arthritis. In our previous work, we showed that simvastatin triggers cell death in LPS-activated RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cells through both caspase-dependent and independent apoptotic pathways. Here, we show that the nuclear orphan receptor NR4A1 is involved in a caspase-independent apoptotic process induced by LPS and simvastatin. Simvastatin-induced NR4A1 expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages and ectopic expression of a dominant-negative mutant form of NR4A1 effectively suppressed both DNA fragmentation and the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) during LPS- and simvastatin-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, apoptosis was accompanied by Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) translocation to the mitochondria. Our findings suggest that NR4A1 expression and mitochondrial translocation of Bax are related to simvastatin-induced apoptosis in LPS-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages.

  • It is generally agreed that strong linkages exist between rubber chains and reinforcing filler particles. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of rubber-filler attachments on the various mechanical properties of the rubber. In particular, the modulus and strength will be altered by these attachments. For this study, the curing properties are examined by means of ODR (Oscillating Disk Rheometer), the physical properties by means of Instrong. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. In the ODR test, the carbon black filled stock has shorter scorch time than gum stock and, the silica and clay filled stock has longer scorch time than gum stock. In the modulus, ten sile and swelling properties, the vulcanizates filled with carbon black had higher those values than inorganic filler loaded NR vulcanizates, but the rebound rate showed that the silica filled NR vulcanizates was lower than other inorganic filler contained NR vulcanizates and the ISAF filled NR vulcanizates was lower than other carbon block contained NR vulcanizates.

  • 본 논문은 중국 장백산 북사면의 5가지 산림 군집에서 우세목의 잎 내 질소 환원 효소의 활성도를 보다 개량된 방법을 적용하여 측정 분석한 내용을 다루었다. 질소 환원 효소의 활성도는 수목의 내음성과 연관이 깊은 것으로 파악되어, 양수일수록 질소 환원 효소의 활성도가 높은 것으로 측정되었다. 또한 질소 환원 효소의 활성도는 산림내의 수직적 구조와 생태적 입지 조건과 연관이 깊은 것으로 나타났다. 질소 환원 효소의 활성도가 높은 수종들은 생장이 빠르고 생산력이 높은 것으로 판단된다.

Influence of Carbon Black Contents and Rubber Compositions on Formation of Wear Debris of Rubber Vulcanizates

  • Wear particles of the model tread compounds for bus and truck tires were made using a laboratory abrasion tester and characterized based on their size distributions, shapes, and crosslink densities. The influence of the carbon black contents and rubber compositions (NR= 100 and NR/BR= 80/20) on the production of wear particles was investigated. The wear particles were separated according to size using a sieve shaker. The shape properties of the wear particles were analyzed using an image analyzer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their shapes were observed as tiny stick cookies or sausages with bumpy surfaces. The particle size distribution tended to be smaller with increasing carbon black content. Moreover, the particle size distributions of the NR = 100 samples were larger than that of the NR/BR blend samples. There were different filaments in the wear particles. The filament diameters tended to be thinner with increasing carbon black content. The crosslink density increased with increasing carbon black content, and the crosslink densities of the NR= 100 samples were lower than those of the NR/BR blend ones. The particle size distribution tended to be smaller with increasing crosslink density. Based on the experimental results, the wear particles can be produced by detaching debris from the main body through repetitive strain and recovery.

수용액으로부터 양이온 염료 흡수에 대한 pH 및 온도 효과 (Effects of pH and Temperature on the Adsorption of Cationic Dyes from Aqueous Suspension by Maghnia Montmorillonite)

  • Maghnia montmorillonite clay를 이용하여, 두 가지 염료(neutral red; NR과 malachite green oxalates; MG)에 대한 pH 및 온도 효과를 측정하였다. 수용액 속에서 MG는 pH 3-9에서 흡수가 나타나는 반면에, 양이온 NR은 pH 3-5에서 red shift 흡수피크가 나타났으며, 중성 NR은 pH 8-12에서 흡수피크가 얻어졌다. NR에 대해서는 465.13 mg/g, MG에 대해서는 459.89 mg/g의 최대 흡수 피크가 각각 298와 318 K에서 얻어졌으며, 자유에너지 Ea 값은 각각 4.472-5.559 kJ/mol과 2.000-2.886 kJ/mol로 얻어졌다. 도한, as ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ and Ea과 같은 다양한 열역학적인 변수들을 계산했으며, 전체적인 반응의 흡수과정은 자발적이고, 흡열반응으로 진행됨을 알 수 있었다.
