This research was focused on the effect of rice straw and rice straw mat on the reduction of upland field non-point source (NPS) pollution discharges. Six experimental plots of $5{\times}22m$ in size and 3% in slope prepared on gravelly sandy loam soil were treated with control, rice straw cover and rice straw mat cover. Radish in Spring growing seasons were cultivated. NPS pollution discharge was monitored and compared with respect to the treatments. The surface cover rate of rice straw and rice straw mat right after the treatments was 64.7% and 73.7%, respectively. Rainfall of the 16 monitored events ranged from 12.8 mm to 538.2 mm. Runoff coefficient of the events was 0.01~0.67 in control plot, 0~0.63 in rice straw plot and 0~0.45 in rice straw mat plot. The reduction of runoff compared to the control plot was 5.4~99.7% in rice straw plot and 32.9~100% in rice straw mat plot. The reduction of NPS pollution load was 52.0% for SS, 28.5% for T-N and 35.2% for T-P in rice straw plot and 79.8% for SS, 68.3% for T-N and 53.3% for T-P in rice straw mat plot. This research revealed that rice straw mat cover on the soil surface could not only increase the crop yield and farmer's income but also reduce the NPS pollution loads significantly.

Effect of rice straw mat and wood shaves on the reduction of runoff and nonpoint source (NPS) pollution loads from field plots were experimentally studied. Three runoff plots of $5{\times}22$ m in size and 3 % in slope were prepared on a loamy sand field. Each plot was equipped with a flume to measure runoff and collect water samples. Experimental treatments of surface cover were bare, wood shaves (1,000 kg/ha) and rice straw mat cover (3,000 kg/ha). Under radish was cultivation. During the growing season of the radish, three rainfall-runoff events were monitored. Effect of wood shaves and straw mat cover on runoff reduction was 4~30 % and 33~75 % respectively compared to control. The effect on NPS pollution reduction was 36.8 and 64.3 % in BOD, 41.1 and 80.8 % in SS, 34.0 and 56.1 % in TP and 28.0 and 56.6 % in TN respectively. It was analyzed that the reduction of runoff and NPS pollution were mainly contributed by the decrease of rainfall energy impact and flow velocity and the increase of infiltration due to the surface cover materials. Rice straw mat showed very stable soil cover while large portion of wood shaves were lost during heavy storm events. It was concluded that straw mat was an efficient cover material to reduce NPS pollution from upland fields.

We have examined the effect of rice straw mat (RSM) on the reduction of non-point source (NPS) pollution loads at soybean cultivations. The slope of the experimental plot was about 3 %. Monitoring was carried out for four years at conventional tillage (CT) in 2008~2009 years and RSM covered tillage in 2010~2011 years. Thirty-two rainfall events were monitored and analyzed during the study period. During the 2 years of 2008 and 2009, 20 rainfall runoff events were monitored. But in 2010 years, only 2 rainfall runoff events could be monitored. And in 2011 years, 10 rainfall runoff events was monitored. It was because the RSM cover enhanced infiltration and reduce runoff in 2010 and 2011. Average NPS pollution load (organic matters) of the RSM covered field was reduced by 72.1~94.2 % compared to that of CT field. NPS pollution load of TN and TP reduced by 67.5 % and 55.7 %, respectively. Especially, SS pollution load was reduced by 97.3 %. Based on the results, rice straw mat cover was considered as a promising best management practices (BMP) to reduce NPS pollution load. However, it was recommended that the results are limited to the field conditions and the same experiments must be performed on different soil textures, slopes, and crops if it is applied to the development of policies.

This study was conducted to describe the characteristics of Non-point source (NPS) Pollution discharge from a coal mining area in Korea. The study areas is located on the Dogye site, Samchuk, Kangwon Province Coal Corporation and the Jangsung site, Taebaek, Kangwon Province Coal Corporation. The monitoring system was installed at a drainage channel and water samples and rainfall events were collected during March 2008 to February 2009. The collected water samples were analyzed with respect to SS, BOD, $COD_{Cr}$, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N, T-P, and TOC, respectively. It was observed that the runoff and water quality were largely influenced by mine drainage. Also a significant relationship was observed from the correlation between flow and water quality, flow and NPS. And estimated Event Mean Concentration (EMC), NPS pollution loads were Dogey coal mine and Taeback coal mine respectively. As the study progresses in the future, runoff and pollution loads will be updated.
The nonpoint pollution source (NPS) is irregular in the amount of generated and runoff. About 70% of the water pollution sources in Korea are NPS. Most of the rural areas are small towns with less than 50 families. This is where sewerage supply is poor. This is where the domestic swage of the house flows directly into the small stream. This study investigated the amount and concentration of domestic swage. And investigated NPS for public officials. We have suggested an improvement plan here. Local government officials lack the concept of NPS. Rural residents also do not know about NPS. Therefore, we proposed NPS public relations and education linked to public administration. This is an extension of the national budget and interest. The domestic swage is discharged at about 272 liters per day in a house. We proposed the introduction of small facilities. If the capacity remains, it is suggested to link to cattle shed, pigsty and so on. The BOD, COD, TN, TP, and SS concentrations were all high. This suggested a reduction in concentration in combination with natural water. Finally, NPS facilities were proposed to be put into rural areas. And it was determined that continuous monitoring was necessary. The results of this study were expected to be applied to NPS management.

This study was aimed to estimate the total application cost and utilization of Turf grass VFS application through the field experiment. The experimental plots were constructed in an upland field of Iksan city within the Saemangeum watershed. Turf grass was transplanted at the down-slope edge of the pollution source area in each of the treated plots. Three rainfall events were monitored during the experiment period, and the rainfall-runoff relationships and NPS pollution reduction effects of the VFS systems were assessed. As results, the reduction ratio of runoff volume ranged 14.1~64.0 %, while the NPS pollution reduction ratio ranged 9.8~73.9 % for SS, 24.0~84.2 % for T-N, 31.6~80.9 % for T-P respectively. The total cost of VFS application was estimated by considering purchase cost of Turf grass sods and construction and maintenance costs of VFS system as well as the loss caused by giving up crop cultivation for the area needed to construct the VFS. The total cost of the VFS was estimated to be approximately \3,379,000/ha/year for the first year of application, and this cost could be decreased to \1,899,000/ha/year from the second year as the construction cost of VFS could no longer need to be counted afterwards. Apart from the NPS pollution reduction effects, the possible utilization of VFS was examined by detaching Turf grass within 40 % of VFS area for sale during spring time when the VFS systems fully covered. The benefit of selling the detached Turf grass sods was estimated as \1,260,000/ha/year, and also found that the VFS area successfully recovered by the time of the summer period. This benefit could attract farmers to adopt the VFS technique to manage agricultural NPS pollution.
In 2004, the Korean government launched comprehensive measures for nonpoint pollution that were intended to reduce their amount by 34.3% over of those forecast by 2020. During the first and second stages of their implementation; from 2004 to 2011, nonpoint source (NPS) measures have focused on systemic improvements and project management, as well as the introduction of optimal management techniques; accordingly, reductions have been small. However, during the third stage in 2011, serious reductions will be pursued. Accordingly, the gradual expansion of sites subject to NPS measures has focused on the establishment of a basis for reduction measures in connection with model projects during the first half of the plan, with full scale enforcement due in the second half. For Korea, rather than commencing NPS management en masse, it has been more appropriate to gradate NPS management into stages tailored to the different needs of new and existing businesses, as well as to the needs of large and small-scale businesses, in consideration of their specific circumstances. This has allowed sufficient time for such businesses to become accustomed to the concept of NPS management.

The land use changes from non-urban areas to urban areas lead to the increased impervious areas, consequently increased direct runoff and higher peak runoff. Urban areas have also been recognized as significant sources of Nonpoint Source (NPS) pollution, while agricultural activities have been known as the primary sources of NPS pollution. Many features of the L-THIA/NPS GIS, L-THIA/NPS WWW system have been enhanced to provide easy-to-use system. The L-THIA model was applied to the Little Eagle Creek (LEC) watershed in Indiana to evaluate the accuracy of the model. The L-THIA/NPS GIS estimated yearly direct runoff values match the direct runoff separated from U.S. Geological Survey stream flow data reasonably. The $R^2$ and Nash-Sutcliffe values are 0.67 and 0.60, respectively. The L-THIA estimated runoff volume and total nitrogen loading for each land use classification in the LEC watershed were computed. The estimated runoff volume and total nitrogen loading in the LEC watershed increased by 180% and 270% for the 20 years. Urbanized areas -"Commercial", "High Density Residential", and "Low Density Residential"- of the LEC watershed made up around 68% of the 1991 total land areas, however contributed more than 92% of average annual runoff and 86% of total nitrogen loading. Therefore, it is essential to consider the impacts of land use change on hydrology and water quality in land use planning of urbanizing watershed.nning of urbanizing watershed.

Four actual cultivations were prepared and a variety of soybean was cultivated. A H-flume, an automatic water level gauge and an automatic water sampler were installed at the outlet of each plot equipped for the measurement of flow rate and its water quality. The amount of rainfall of the study area in 2013 was measured as 975.6 mm which was much lower than the annual average rainfall of 1,271.8 mm, resulting in less occurrences in rainfall-runoff events. Rainfall-runoff events were occurred three times during the rainfall event of 4~5 July, 23 and 24 August. The characteristics of NPS pollution discharge of the plots and the reduction effect of the selected BMPs were analyzed during these events. The reduction effect of straw mat and soil amendments (Polyacrylamide (PAM) and Gypsum) on runoff ratio ranged between 38.2 and 92.9% (average 71.6%). The NPS pollution load reduced between 27.7 and 95.1% (average 70.0%) by the application of rice straw mat and soil conditioner when compared with that of control plot. Soybean yield (2,133.3 kg/ha) of the straw mat covered plots increased by 14.3% when compared with control (1,866.7 kg/ha). The effect of straw mat on the yield was not economically viable if the material and accompanying labor costs were considered. The data collected and analyzed on different soil textures and crops in this study are expected to be a fundamental reference for the expansion of the results to the application nationwide and the development of NPS pollution management policies.

The objective of this research was to experimentally test the effect of tillage methods on the reduction of runoff, non-point source (NPS) pollution load, sediment and discharge under a rainfall simulation. We used the runoff plots of $5m{\times}30m$ ($L{\times}W$) in size. Experimental treatments were conventional tillage (CT), CT-rice straw bundle (CT-RSB) and two no-till (NT) plots; slope of 3 % or 8 % ; and rainfall intensity of 30 mm/hr. The rainfall simulation was conducted to three times. The time to initial runoff from NT plots was less than that from CT plots regardless of the slope and it was delayed about 65~90 % compared to that of CT plot. And sediment discharge of 8 % slope reduced to 55 % compared to CT plot. But the sediment discharge was not occurred at 3 % slope. The NT and CT-RSB methods have a great possibility of reducing runoff and NPS pollution loads. Runoff rate of NT plots was significantly lower than those of CT plot. The average NPS pollution loads of the NT plots and CT-RSB plot reduced about 55~80 % and 2.1~40 % compared to those of the CT plots, respectively. It was also shown that runoff and NPS pollution loads reduction by NT method could be very significant and contribute to improve the water quality of streams in agricultural regions. It was concluded that the use of NT method on agricultural fields could reduce soil erosion and muddy runoff significantly and help improve the water quality and aquatic ecosystem.
