Effect of Secondary Air Injection on CO and NOx Emission in an Internally Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustor (이중 순환식 유동층 연소로내에서 2차 공기 주입에 의한 CO, NOx 저감효과)

  • Combustion experiments are carried out to obtain the fundamental data for application of a internally circulating fluidized bed combustor to the combustion of paper sludge wastes. Experimental parameters are identified as secondary air ratio, sludge weight and water contents. The secondary air ratio was varied from 0 to 20% and water content was 14%, 25%, 35%, 45%, 62% and sludge weight was 30g, 60g, 90g. As a result, carbon conversion ratio was higher than injection of primary air. Emission of CO and NOx reduced with an increase of secondary air injection.

  • An experiment using preheated air in the coaxial diffusion flame burner was carried out in order to decrease NOx emission and improve the thermal efficiency. Preheated air combustion generally produces high NOx emissions but it was known very well to reduce NOx emission by diluting the combustion air with inert gas in preheated air combustion. In our study, $N_2$ gas was used for diluent and propane was utilized for fuel. We set the combustion air temperature on 300K, 500K, 700K, 900K and dilution level from 21% to 10% in terms of oxygen concentration. NOx emission increased along increment of combustion air temperature and decreased along increment of dilution level(lowering of oxygen concentration in combustion air). Flame-off limit with dilution level enhanced, flame length became longer and the location of maximum flame temperature became lower with increasing of combustion air temperature.

  • Numerical analysis on the characteristics of nitrogen oxides (NOx) formation in turbulent nonpremixed hydrogen-air flames was carried out. Lagrange IEM model and Assumed PDF model were applied to consider turbulence-chemistry interaction known to affect the production of NOx. Partial equilibrium assumption was used to predict nonequilibrium effect to which one-half power dependence between EINOx normalized by flame residence time and global strain rate is attributed. As a result. such one-half power dependence could be reproduced only by reaction model including $HO_{2}$and $H_{2}O_{2}$, which means its dependence on Damkohler number; nonequilibrium effect. This dependence was shown better in the region of higher global strain. Besides, the improvement of turbulence model is required to predict mean flow properties quantitatively in the radial direction.

  • A numerical analysis of a lean premixed combustor in a micro gas turbine was carried out to investigate the correlation between the turbulent mixing and emission characteristics on the combustor geometries. The interaction between the burners, by flow direction and momentum, significantly influenced on the turbulent mixing and combustion characteristics. The vortex which was generated by thermal expansion was observed during the combustion process, this was distinguished from the combustor geometries. The results showed that these characteristics can affect the NOx emission.

  • In this paper, experiments were carried out to study the decrease of NOx in simulated flue gases (initial concentration of NO 1000, 750, 400 ppm, : $N_2$ balance gas). Characteristics of NOx reduction are measured and analysed in corona discharge of multi needles to plane electrode structure and magnetic field. The best characteristics of NO reduction is measured when electric and magnetic field were supplied to reactor, at same time. Consumption power applied electric and magnetic field were higher than that of discharge applied only electric field.

  • Many research works have been carried out to investigate the factors governing the performance of diesel engine. The area of the study has been focused on reducing both of NOx and smoke because of many difficulties to reduce them simultaneously in diesel engines. One of the efforts is an application of EGR technology to reduce NOx emission, which is very effective, but increases other emissions and makes fuel economy worse. In order to solve the problem, EGR is employed with water emulsified fuel and tested in this paper. Emulsified fuel is produced by centrifugal mixer and the amount of water is controlled by water injector and pulse generator, and EGR rate is controlled with 6-step control valve. The chamber pressure, fuel consumption and emissions are measured with various values of both EGR and water mixing rate, The results show that NOx emission is reduced much rather and smoke is also reduced simultaneously.

Combustion and Emission Characteristics of the Surface Flames in Porous Ceramic Burner (다공세라믹 버너를 이용한 표면화염의 연소 및 배기특성)

  • The surface flames in porous ceramic burner are experimentally characterized to investigate the effects of equivalence ratio and firing rates. The results show that the surface flames are classified into green, red radiant and blue surface flame as decrease of equivalence ratio. And each flame is maintained very stably and shows the same flame characteristics at any orientation of ceramic burner. Particularly the blue surface flame was found to be very stable at very lean equivalence ratio at 200 to $800\;kw/m^2$ firing rates. And the exhausted NOx was analysed to find out which flame has lower NOx emission. The blue surface flame showed the lowest NOx emission regardless of the location of burner since it sustained very stable at lean mixture ratio.

  • An experimental investigation on the reduction of nitrogen oxide emission from swirling, turbulent diffusion flames was conducted using multi air staged combustor, The combustor utilizes swirler to dampen fuel/air mixing, allowing an extended residence time for fuel pyrolysis and fuel-N conversion chemistry in an locally fuel-rich environment prior to burnout. This process also allow to reduce thermal NOx formation to lessen the temperature of reaction zone. The aerodynamic process therefore emulates the conventional staged combustion process, but without the need for the physically separate fuel-rich and -lean stages. Parametric studies on the ratios of each staged air and droplet size were carried out the feasibility of fuel/air mixing for low NOx combustion with diesel and pyridine mixed diesel fuel oil.

Dependence of Nanoparticle and Combustion Characteristics of Gasoline Direct Injection Engines on Coolant Temperature (GDI 엔진의 냉각수온에 따른 연소성능 및 입자상 물질 배출 특성)

  • This paper investigated the combustion and exhaust gas characteristics of gasoline direct injection engines for various cooling water temperature. The engine-out nanoparticle emission number and size distribution were measured by a DMS-500 equipped upstream of the catalyst. A CLD-400 and an HFR-400 were equipped at the exhaust port to analyze the cyclic NOx and total hydrocarbon emission characteristics. The results showed that the nanoparticle emission number greatly increased at low coolant temperatures and that the exhaust mainly contained particulate matter of 5.10 nm. THC also increased under low temperature conditions because of fuel film on the combustion chamber. NOx emissions decreased under high temperature conditions because of the increase in internal exhaust gas recirculation. In conclusion, an engine management system control strategy for driving coolant temperature up rapidly is needed to reduce not only THC and NOx but also nanoparticle emissions.

A Study on the Formation of Nitrate in Atmosphere(II) (환경 대기중에서 Nitrate의 생성에 관한 연구(II))

  • This study was carried out to determine the concentration of gaseous nitrate$(HNO_3)$ particulate nitrate$(NO_3^-)$ and conversion rate of NOx to nitrate in atmosphere in Seoul from Oct 1991 to July 1992. The average concentration of gaseous nitrate in daytime(09:00 - 17:00) was 9.93, 3.37, 7.40 and 10.40$\mug/m^3$ and, in highttime was 6.21, 7.31, 4.79 and 3.86$\mug/m^3$ respectively. The concentratin of $HNO_3$ was greater in summer and daytime than winter and nighttime. But the concentration of $NO_3^-$ was greater in winter and nighttime than in summer and daytime. The average conversion rate of NOx to $HNO_3$(Fn) indaytime was 13.18, 3.78, 9.13 and 23.13% and, in nighttime was 3.06, 1.37, 1.70 and 8.72% during fall, winter, spring and summer respectively. But the average conversion rate of NOx to $NO_3^-$(Fn') in daytime was 5.79, 5.77, 2.63 and 3.90% and in nighttime was 5.95, 6.51, 3.25 and 4.84% respectively. The average conversion rate of NOx to total nitrate $(HNO_3 + NO_3^-)$(Fn') was 12.72, 7.81, 7.82 and 18.40% respectively. The average conversion rate of NOx to $HNO_3$(Fn) was greater than $NO_3^-$(Fn') about 1.6 times.
