  • The NOx emission characteristics of double-concentric diffusion flames and normal diffusion flames fueled with CH$_4$ were studied. Experimental and numerical investigations were carried out for double-concentric diffusion flame with varying central air flow rate and normal diffusion flame. The Emission indices of NOx(EINOx) were measured by chemiluminescent method and calculated by numerical model based on detailed chemistry. From the comparison between double-concentric diffusion flames and normal diffusion flames, the results show that EINOx of double-concentric diffusion flames are lower than normal diffusion flame, because of Prompt EINOx was decreased. EINOx of double-concentric diffusion flames increase with central air flow rate increasing.

  • Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, lab-scale gas turbine combustor to see the effect of partial premixing on unstable flame structure and Nox emission characteristics. The swirl angle is 45 deg., fuel-air mixing degrees were varied 0, 50 and 100% respectively at equivalence ratio ranging from 0.53 to 0.79. The evolution of phased-locked OH chemiluminescence images were acquired with an ICCD. NOx emission characteristics were also investigated at each experimental condition. The effect of the fuel-air mixing degree on the flame structure was obtained from phase-locked $OH^*$ images. And it was obtained from local heat release characteristics that the information about the region which the combustion instability was amplified or damped. It also could be confirmed that $\sigma$ has greatly influence on NOx emission characteristics at lean regimes. It would be expected that it could provide invaluable data for understanding the mechanism of combustion instability.

  • To investigate emission characteristics of laminar premixed CH4/air flame, combustion experiments were conducted at three flow rates (5.3L/min, 10.6L/min, 15.5L/min) with changing the combustor pressure(-30Kpa-30Kpa). It was found that with increasing flow rate, NOx emission increased in high pressure condition, while decreased in low pressure condition; and the emission of CO decreased with increasing flow rate. For the influence of pressure, emission of NOx increased with increasing pressure regardless of flow rates, while CO emission decreased on the contrary.

  • Influence of changing combustor pressure on flame stabilization and emission index in the swirl-stabilized flame was investigated. The combustor pressure was controlled by suction fan at combustor exit. Pressure index ($P^{\ast}$=Pabs/Patm), where Pabs and Patm indicated the absolute pressure and atmosphere pressure, respectively, was controlled in the range of 0.7${\sim}$1.3 for each equivalence ratio conditions. The flammable limits of swirl flames were largely influenced by changing combustor pressure and they showed similar tendency with laminar flames. NOx emission index decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions. R.m.s. of pressure fluctuations is increased with decreasing combustor pressure. This flame fluctuation caused incomplete combustion, hence CO emission index increased. These oscillating flames were measured by simultaneous $CH^{\ast}$ chemiluminescence time-series visualization and pressure fluctuation measurement.

  • Blending effects of hydrogen and water vapor on flame structure and NOx emission behavior are numerically studied with detailed chemistry in methane-air counterflow diffusion flames. The composition of fuel is systematically changed from pure methane and pure hydrogen to the blending fuels of methane-hydrogen-water vapor through the molar addition of $H_2O$. Flame structure is changed considerably for hydrogen-blending methane flames and hydrogen-blending methane flames diluted with water vapor in comparison to pure methane flame. These complicated changes of flame structures also affect NOx emission behavior considerably. The changes of thermal NO and Fenimore NO are analyzed for various combinations of the fuel composition. Importantly contributing reaction steps to thermal NO and Fenimore NO are addressed in pure methane, hydrogen-blending methane flames, and hydrogen-blending methane flames diluted with water vapor.

  • We examined the characteristics of $NO_x$ emission for CH4/air non-premixed flames using the exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) methods, which are the air-induced EGR(AI-EGR) and fuel-induced EGR(FI-EGR) methods. Our experimental results show that the $NO_x$ emission index($EI_{NOx}$) decreased with increasing EGR ratio. In the range needed to form a stable flame, the reduction rate of $EI_{NOx}$ for the FI-EGR method was approximately 29% when the EGR ratio was 20%, and the reduction rate for the AI-EGR method was approximately 28% with 25% of the EGR ratio. According to the flame structure based on numerical results, high temperature regions for the FI-EGR method were narrower and lower than those for the AI-EGR method at the same EGR ratio. Furthermore, based on the experimental results for swirl flames, the reduction rate of $EI_{NOx}$ for the FI-EGR method was approximately 49% with 15% of the EGR ratio, while the maximum reduction rate for AI-EGR method was approximately 45% with 25% of the EGR ratio. Consequently, we verified that the FI-EGR method was more effective than the AI-EGR method in reducing $NO_x$ emission for non-premixed flames with EGR. We expect that the results of this study will provide fundamental information relating to hybrid combustion systems, which can be used in the design of combustion systems in the future.

  • The combustion process within a porous inert medium (PIM) burner is numerical studied. A detailed chemical reaction scheme including thermal and prompt NO$_{x}$ reactions is used to predict the formation and destruction of pollutants such as NO$_{x}$ and CO. The reaction paths for NO$_{x}$ formation are divided to quantify the amount of NO$_{x}$ formed through thermal NO$_{x}$ reaction or through prompt NO$_{x}$ reaction. Emission index is calculated to compare the actual mass of NO$_{x}$ or CO produced through the combustion of unit mass of fuel. It is found NO formation in PIM burner is confined in flame zone and formation is suppressed due to heat loss at down-stream of the flame. Higher production of NO through prompt NO reaction path is observed due to the higher concentration of fuel derivative species and its higher diffusion at flame front. For all equivalence ratios, CO emission within PIM burner is lower than that from the one-dimensional freely-propagating flame. PIM burner flame has better NO$_{x}$ emission index from .psi. = 0.75 to .psi. = 1.1. to .psi. = 1.1.

  • In this study, the influence of changing combustor pressure on nitric oxide emission was investigated. Expansion of reaction region was more clear in the P$^{*}$ <1 conditions compared to the P$^{*}\geq1$ conditions, and it could be observed that flames are distinct in the P$^{*}\geq1$ conditions and that brightness is relative low and wide distribution is shown in the P$^{*}$ <1 conditions. In the respect of temperature distribution, narrow and high-temperature region was shown in the P$^{*}\geq1$ conditions. On the other hands, overall uniform temperature distributions were shown in the P$^{*}$ <1 conditions. Nitric oxide emission decreased with decreasing combustor pressure. This tendency was explained by the mean flame temperature distribution. Low NOx combustion is ascribed to wide-spread reaction region in the low combustor Pressure and oscillation were shown P$^{*}\leq0.97$, and strength and sizes of oscillation were more increased with lower pressure index. These results demonstrate that flame shape and nitric oxide emission can be controlled with changing combustor pressure.

  • Combustion instabilities are an important concern associated with lean premixed combustion. Laboratory-scale dump combustor was used to understand the underlying mechanisms causing combustion instabilities. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and sound level meter was used to track the pressure fluctuations inside the combustor. Instability maps and phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were obtained at several conditions to investigate the mechanism of combustion instability and relations between pressure wave and heat release rate. It showed that combustion instability was susceptible to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio (>0.6) as the mean velocity was decreased. Instabilities exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ∼341.8 Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instabilities occurred. Rayleigh index distribution gave a hint about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. These results also give an insight to the control scheme of combustion instabilities. Emission test revealed that NOx emissions were affected by not only equivalence ratio but also combustion instability.
