  • The patient, 16 years female, complained of anterior cross-bite and retrusion of maxilla. Mandibular incisors occluded labially to maxillary incisors. Normally developed mandibular arch in normal elation to facial line, S-N-Pog was within normal range. Cross-bite of anterior teeth was corrected by means of Class III elastics under multibanded system. Space for alignment of crowding of upper anterior teeth was regained by means of cervical headgear and sliding yoke. She gained good alignment of anterior teeth and attractive facial profile after 2 years.

  • A roentgenographic cephalometric study was made on the soft and hard tissue profile of Korean adults. The subject consisted of 52 males and 54 females from 17 to 22 years of age and with normal occlusion and acceptable profile. Twenty one landmarks were plotted and two oriented lines named SnH line and SnV line were drawn on the tracings of all cephalograms. The means and the standard deviations from the subjects were calculated in each measuring category and the means were compared with those of male and femal samples. The results were obtained as follow: 1. In depth and height, individual variations and sex differences of the lower facial profile were larger than the upper face. 2. The sex differences of upper facial profile were larger in height than depth. 3. The individual variations and sex differences of the top of nose were the smallest in all measuring points. 4. The thickness of the soft tissue of upper face and upper lip in male sample were larger than those of female, but the same matter were not found in mental region.

  • To analyze the skeletal characteristics of the open bite, the faces of normal occlusion and open bite were measured using a cephalogram. The factors which were greatly different from normal occlusion were selected. The effects of these factors on the incisal overbite and correlation on these factors were studied. The following results were obtained: 1. The 13 factors which comprised the characteristics of the open bite were obtained. (Table 5) 2. The cause and amount of the open bite were dependent on the skeletal angulation than skeletal length. 3. For determining the incisal overbite, most highly correlated single factor was the interincisal angle. 4. The correlation on the selected 13 factors which comprised the characteristics of the open bite was obtained. (Table 6) 5. The open bite was due to combination of various factors than due to single factor. (Table 3,4).

  • This study has been performed to determine whether significant differences in the maxillary basal bone pattern exist between skeletal class II malocclusion and normal occlusion. Materials for the skeletal Class III sample consisted of lateral cephalometric roentgenograms and maxillary cast models of 29 adult individuals, 15 males and 14 females. The average age was 19.75 years with a range from 16.4 to 29.1 years. A normal control sample consisted of lateral cephalometric roentgenograms and maxillary cast models of 24 adult individuals, 13 males and 11 females. The average age was 24.25 years with a range from 20.8 to 29.4 years. The results of this study can be summarized and concluded as like follows. 1. In comparing sexual difference of maxillary basal bone morphology in skeletal Class III malocclusion, the following Parameters of males were found to be significally larger than those of females : inter first premolar width, inter molar width, oblique canine height, oblique molar height and maxillary basal bone perimeter. 2. In comparing sexual difference of maxillary basal bone morphology in normal occlusion, the following parameters of males were found to be significally larger than those of females : inter canine width, inter first and second premolar width, inter molar width, oblique canine height and oblique molar height. 3. In comparing maxillary basal bone morphologic difference between skeletal Class III malocclusion md normal occlusion in males, the following parameters were found to be significally larger in normal occlusion : inter canine width, inter canine height, inter molar height, oblique canine height and oblique molar height. 4. In comparing maxillary basal bone morphologic difference between skeletal Class III malocclusion and normal occlusion in females, the following parameters were found to be significally larger in normal occlusion : inter canine height, inter molar height, oblique canine height, oblique molar height and maxillary basal bone perimeter.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate primary diagnosis, prediction of prognosis and recognition fo treatment progress for treatment of TMD patients through measuring the various ranges of mandibular movement in normal and TMDs patients using Mandibular Kinesiograph K-6 Diagnostic system. In normal groups, 20 adults were selected, who have normal or class I molar relationship, and have no symptoms on TMJ and masticatory muscles, and have restorations less than 3 surfaces on each tooth, and have no other prosthetic restoration. In Patients group, we selected 31 outpatients who were confirmed to TMDs with clinical examination and radiographic findings. The obtained results were as follows : 1. In maximal opening, patient group was showed the limitation of vertical movement range (P<0.01) and lager lateral deviation than in normal group (P<0.05). And actual dimensional displacement of opening was calculated larger in normal group (P<0.05). 2. In protrusive movement, patients group was showed the limitation of anteroposterior movement range (P<0.001) and larger deviation than in normal group (P<0.01). And actual 3 dimensional displacement of protrusion was calculated larger in normal group (P<0.001). 3. In lateral maximum excursion, compared with normal group patient group was no significant differences to affected side, but was showed the limitation of lateral movement to unaffected side (P<0.001). 4. There was no significant difference in movement velocity of opening and closing in both groups. 5. Mandibular movement from physiologic rest position to centric occlusion was moved more anteroposteriorly in patient group. 6. Mandibular movement from centric relation to centric occlusion was no significant difference in both groups.

  • Objective : This study was performed to investigate the protective effect of Stephania tetrandra(ST) against ischemic brain damage after a middle cerebral artery(MCA) occlusion. The effect was evaluated using histological tests, neurobehavioral tests, and biochemical tests. Methods : Rats(Sprague-Dawley) were divided into four groups : sham operated group, MCA occluded group, post MCA occlusion Stephania tetrandra administrated (7.6mg/l00g) group, and normal group. The MCA was occluded by intraluminal method. Stephania tetrandra was administrated orally twice at 1 and 4 hours after MCA occlusion. The neurobehavioral test was performed at 3, 6, 9 and 24 hours after MCA occlusion by posture reflex test and swimming behavioral test. All groups were sacrificed then. The brain tissues were stained with 2% triphenyl tetrazolium chloride(TTC) or 1 % cresyl violet solution, to examine infarct size, volume and cell number. Tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ level was measured from sera using Enzyme-Linked Immunoabsorbent Assay(ELISA). The mRNA expression level of inflammatory cytokines and related receptor type I and II, $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6, and IL-10 6hours after MCA occlusion were also studied by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction(RTPCR). Results : The results showed that : Stephania tetrandra (1) reduced infarct size and total infarct volume by 52.2% compared to the control group; (2) attenuated significantly in neuronal death, which was shown by a decrease in cell number(P<0.01) and size(P<0.01) in the boundary area of the infarction; (3) significantly reduced serum $TNF-{\alpha}$ level, and increased the mRNA level of IL-10 in the cortex region(P<0.01). However, there was no significant effect on motor deficit in swimming behavioral test. Conclusions : In conclusion, Stephania tetrandra has protective effects against ischemic brain damage at the early stage of ischemia.
