Nanotechnology mostly employs nano-materials and nano-structures with distinctive properties based on their size, structure, and composition. It is quite difficult to produce nano-materials and nano-structures with identical sizes, structures, and compositions in large quantities, because of spatiotemporal fluctuation of production processes. In other words, fluctuation is the bottleneck in nanotechnology. We propose three strategies to suppress such fluctuations: employing 1) difference between linear and nonlinear phenomena, 2) difference in time constants, and 3) nucleation as a bottleneck phenomenon. We are also developing nano- and micro-scale guided assembly using plasmas as a plasma nanofabrication.1-5) We manipulate nano- and micro-objects using electrostatic, electromagnetic, ion drag, neutral drag, and optical forces. The accuracy of positioning the objects depends on fluctuation of position and energy of an object in plasmas. Here we evaluate such fluctuations and discuss the mechanism behind them. We conducted in-situ evaluation of local plasma potential fluctuation using tracking analysis of fine particles (=objects) in plasmas. Experiments were carried out with a radio frequency low-pressure plasma reactor, where we set two quartz windows at the top and bottom of the reactor. Ar plasmas were generated at 200 Pa by applying 13.56MHz, 450V peak-to-peak voltage. The injected fine particles were monodisperse methyl methacrylate-polymer spheres of $10{\mu}m$ in diameter. Fine particles were injected into the reactor and were suspended around the plasma/sheath boundary near the powered electrode. We observed binary collision of fine particles with a high-speed camera. The frame rate was 1000-10000 fps. Time evolution of their distance from the center of mass was measured by tracking analysis of the two particles. Kinetic energy during the collision was obtained from the result. Potential energy formed between the two particles was deduced by assuming the potential energy plus the kinetic energy is constant. The interaction potential is fluctuated during the collision. Maximum amplitude of the fluctuation is 25eV, and the average is 8eV. The fluctuation can be caused by neutral molecule collisions, ion collisions, and fluctuation of electrostatic force. Among theses possible causes, fluctuation of electrostatic force may be main one, because the fine particle has a large negative charge of -17000e and the corresponding electrostatic force is large compared to other forces.
Coalbed methane has a nonlinear desorption curve depending on the pressure, so an appropriate production system should be constructed considering this phenomenon. The capacity and specification of the coalbed methane gas production facility are determined by the gas flow rate and pressure in the coalbed, which is the external boundary condition of the system. Thus, it is essential to analyze these characteristics in gas production. The gas inflow equation was calculated using the reservoir flow model and utilized as the boundary condition of the whole production facility in this study. Also, to understand the effect of pressure drop on the gas flow in the production facility, the nodal analysis was performed using the flow analysis simulator of production equipment, and we determined the proper specifications and operating conditions of the production facility. This study presents a design criteria as to production and gathering system capable of effectively transporting coalbed methane.
In recent years, finite strain consolidation theories including a mechanical nonlinearity and a reasonable coordinate system have been proposed and used in educations and practical consolidation problems. However, despite their reasonable ability to predict the consolidation behavior, their failure in the field can be attributed to the complexity of estimating and selecting proper parameters for simulating the consolidation phenomenon. In this study, therefore, the application of a piecewise-linear method was proposed to solve such problems including the assumption of the uniqueness in compressibility. Especially, the concept of reference curve was introduced to define the effect of strain rate dependency of clay. The applicability of the methodology is verified by several tests. It was found that the proposed method is applicable in restrictive ranges of study carried out in the laboratory. Finally it is expected that the verification in field consolidation problem has to be carried out through future study.
Globular clusters (GCs) are among the oldest stellar objects in the universe and provide valuable constraints on many aspects of galaxy evolution. GC systems typically exhibit bimodal color distributions the phenomenon of which has been a major topic in the area of GC research. GC color bimodality established a paradigm where scenarios to explain its origin require two GC groups with different formation origins. The GC division, asserted mainly by photometric color bimodality so far, has been viewed as the presence of two distinct metallicity subgroups within individual galaxies. In this study, we make use of spectroscopy of GC systems associated with two giant galaxies, M31 (the Andromeda) and M87 (NGC 4486), to investigate the GC bimodality and the underlying metallicity distributions. Recent spectroscopy on the globular cluster (GC) system of M31 with unprecedented precision witnessed a clear bimodality in absorption-line index distributions of old GCs. Given that spectroscopy is a more detailed probe into stellar population than photometry; the discovery of index bimodality may point to the very existence of dual GC populations. However, here we show that the observed spectroscopic dichotomy of M31 GCs emerges due to the nonlinear nature of metallicity-to-index conversion and thus one does not necessarily have to invoke two separate GC subsystems. We present spectra of 130 old globular clusters (GCs) associated with the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy M87, obtained using the Multi-Object Spectrography (MOS) mode of Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the Subaru telescope. M87 GCs with reliable metallicity measurements exhibit significant inflection along the color-metallicity relations, through which observed color bimodality is reproduced from a broad, unimodal metallicity distribution. Our findings lend further support to this new interpretation of the GC color bimodality, which could change much of the current thought on the formation of GC systems and their host galaxies.

In this study, the progressive inelastic deformation, so called, thermal ratchet phenomenon which can occur in high temperature structures of liquid metal reactor was simulated with thermal ratchet structural test facility and 316L stainless steel test cylinder. The thermal ratchet deformation at the reactor baffle cylinder of the liquid metal reactor can occur due to the moving temperature distribution along the axial direction as the sodium free surface moves up and down under the cyclic heat-up and cool-down transients. The ratchet deformation was measured with the laser displacement sensor and LVDTs after cooling the structural specimen which is heated up to 55$0^{\circ}C$ with steep temperature gradients along the axial direction. The temperature distribution of the test cylinder along the axial direction was measured with 28 channels of thermocouples and was used for the ratchet analysis. The thermal ratchet deformation was analyzed with the constitutive equation of nonlinear combined hardening model which was implemented as ABAQUS user subroutine and the analysis results were compared with those of the test. Thermal ratchet load was applied 9 times and the residual displacement after 9 cycles of thermal load was measured to be 1.79mm. The ratcheting deformation shapes obtained by the analysis with the combined hardening model were in reasonable agreement with those of the structural tests.
In this study, This study investigates the axial load behavior of concrete-filled steel columns using seismic rectangular steel tube with the width-to-thickness and slenderness ratio. Due to cold-roll forming and cold-press forming of steel tube, the flat part and the corner part of the rectangular steel tubes are changed in the material properties compared to SN-steel plate. It was showed the tendency to increase yield strength, tensile strength and upper limit of yield ratio This phenomenon affects the nonlinear behavior after local buckling of the steel tube. Therefore, the coupon test was performed by the processing of rectangular steel tube, in order to assess forming performance. And a total of 6 CFT-columns were tested under monotonic loading condition. Main parameters were the width-thickness ratio and the slenderness ratio.

A methodology is proposed to estimate a trajectory of a flying target and its velocity using the time and frequency analysis of the acoustic signal. The measurement of sound emitted from a flying acoustic source with a microphone above a ground shall receive both direct and ground-reflected sound waves. For certain frequency contents, the destructive interference happens in received signal waveform reflected path lengths are in multiple integers of direct path length. This phenomenon is referred to as the acoustical mirror effect and it can be observed in a spectrogram plot. The spectrogram of acoustic measurement for a flying vehicle measurement shows several orders of destructive interference curves. The first or second order of curve is used to find the best approximate path by using nonlinear least-square method. Simulated acoustic signal is generated for the condition of known geometric of a sensor and a source in flight. The estimation based on cepstrogram analysis provides more accurate estimate than spectrogram.
This paper presents a stochastic model for the software failure phenomenon based on a nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). The failure process is analyzed to develop a suitable mean value function for the NHPP ; expressions are given for several performance measure. Actual software failure data are compared with generalized model by Goel dependent on the constant reflecting the quality of testing. The performance measures and parametric inferences of the new models, Rayleigh and Gumbel distributions, are discussed. The results of the new models are applied to real software failure data and compared with Goel-Okumoto and Yamada, Ohba and Osaki models. Tools of parameter inference was used method of the maximun likelihood estimate and the bisection algorithm for the computing nonlinear root. In this paper, using the sum of the squared errors, model selection was employed. The numerical example by NTDS data was illustrated.
The progressive collapse phenomenon is generally regarded as dynamic. Due to the impracticality of nonlinear dynamic computations for practitioners, an interest arises for the development of equivalent static pushover procedures. The present paper proposes a methodology to identify such a procedure for sudden column removals, using energetic evaluations to determine the pushover loads to apply. In a dynamic context, equality between the cumulated external and internal works indicates a vanishing kinetic energy. If such a state is reached, the structure is sometimes assumed able to withstand the column removal. Approximations of these works can be estimated using a static computation, leading to an estimate of the displacements at the zero kinetic energy configuration. In comparison with other available procedures based on such criteria, the present contribution identifies loading patterns to associate with the zero-kinetic energy criterion to avoid a single-degree-of-freedom idealisation. A parametric study over a family of regular steel structures of varying sizes uses non-linear dynamic computations to assess the proposed pushover loading pattern for the cases of central and lateral ground floor column failure. The identified quasi-static loading schemes are shown to allow detecting nearly all dynamically detected plastic hinges, so that the various beams are provided with sufficient resistance during the design process. A proper accuracy is obtained for the plastic rotations of the most plastified hinges almost independently of the design parameters (loads, geometry, robustness), indicating that the methodology could be extended to provide estimates of the required ductility for the beams, columns, and beam-column connections.
Historical earthquakes have shown that successive seismic events may occur in regions of high seismicity. Such a sequence of earthquakes has the potential to increase the damage level of the structures, since any rehabilitation between the successive ground motions is practically impossible due to lack of time. Few studies about this issue can be found in literature, most of which focused their attention on the seismic response of SDOF systems or planar frame structures. The aim of the present study is to examine the impact of seismic sequences on the damage level of 3D multistorey R/C buildings with various structural systems. For the purposes of the above investigation a comprehensive assessment is conducted using three double-symmetric and three asymmetric in plan medium-rise R/C buildings, which are designed on the basis of the current seismic codes. The buildings are analyzed by nonlinear time response analysis using 80 bidirectional seismic sequences. In order to account for the variable orientation of the seismic motion, the two horizontal accelerograms of each earthquake record are applied along horizontal orthogonal axes forming 12 different angles with the structural axes. The assessment of the results revealed that successive ground motions can lead to significant increase of the structural damage compared to the damage caused by the corresponding single seismic events. Furthermore, the incident angle can radically alter the successive earthquake phenomenon depending on the special characteristics of the structure, the number of the sequential earthquakes, as well as the distance of the record from the fault.
