  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze non-invasive treatments and drooling assessment methods in children with cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities, who drool. Methods : This study searched two hundred papers published in 2005-2019. Forty-four papers were selected based on their abstract and title, and ten papers were finally selected following a secondary search. Results : The PEDro Scale of the selected papers was high with an average of seven points. As a result of analyzing the overall trends, the study participants were primarily patients with cerebral palsy, and recently, the therapeutic intervention of oral sensory exercise was more actively studied than behavioral modification. Studies of behavioral modification and oral sensory exercise intervention methods were found to have differences in participant age and, cognitive level, number of participants, research design, treatment time, and duration. Studies to confirming the frequency and severity of the drooling measurement method were found to be the main factor. Conclusion : This study analyzed typical behavioral modification and oral sensory exercise interventions as examples of non-invasive therapeutic interventions for children with cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities and provided information to help select appropriate therapeutic intervention methods when planning non-invasive therapy using behavioral modification and oral sensory exercise therapy.

  • Purpose: To investigate the accuracy, precision and validity of fever detection of tympanic membrane (TM), temporal artery (TA) and axillary temperature (AT) compared with pulmonary artery temperature (PA). Methods: Repeated-measures design was conducted for one year on 83 adult cardiac care unit patients with pulmonary artery catheters after open heart surgery. Sequential temperature measurements were taken three times at 20-minute intervals. Accuracy, precision, repeatability, and validity of fever detection were analyzed. Results: Mean pulmonary artery temperature was $37.04^{\circ}C$ (SD $0.70^{\circ}C$). The mean (SD) offsets from PA, with the mean reflecting accuracy and SD reflecting precision, were $-1.31^{\circ}C$ ($0.75^{\circ}C$) for TA, $-0.20^{\circ}C$ ($0.24^{\circ}C$) for TM, and $-0.97^{\circ}C$ ($0.64^{\circ}C$) for AT. Percentage of pairs with differences within ${\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ was 9.6% for TA, 19.7% for AT, and 91.6% for TM. Repeated measurements with all three methods had mean SD values within $0.04^{\circ}C$. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of tympanic measurements were 0.76, 1.0, and 1.0, and 0.90, respectively. Conclusion: Results show that TM best reflects PA, and is most consistent, accurate, and precise. AT tends to underestimate PA, and TA is least accurate and precise. Therefore tympanic membrane measurement is a reliable alternative to other non-invasive methods of measuring temperatures.

  • Purpose: In order to determine the amount of wound healing, objective sequential assessments of changes in wound size and depth are essential. Although a variety of measurements for wound healing have been proposed, a gold standard for quantifying day-to-day changes in healing has not been established. We present here a simple and non-invasive wound measurement method that quantitatively and accurately documents changes of the size of a raw surface and the volume of a soft tissue defect using a stereoimage optical topometer(SOT) system. Methods: Using a 5mm diameter biopsy punch, four circular wounds were created on abdominal area of a diabetic mouse. Photographs were taken using SOT system at baseline, 5th day and 10th postoperative day. The wound margin was traced on a digitalized photo and evaluated the area and the volume of the wound by SOT system. Results: The SOT system calculated a mean wound surface of $15.93{\pm}0.29mm^2$ and volume of $827.50{\pm}88.86$ intensity/pixel${\times}$area(I/PA) immediately after wounding. On the 5th day after the operation wound surface declined by $10.73mm^2$ and on the 10th day declined by $5.95mm^2$. The wound volume also declined from 827.50 I/PA to 161.75 I/PA and 30.50 I/PA on 0, 5th and 10th day, respectively. Conclusion: The SOT system described in this study represents a reliable, simple, practical, and non-invasive technique to accurately monitor and evaluate wound healing.

  • Absorption spectra of blood components have been measured for the purpose of predicting the total hemoglobin concentration. We obtained absorption spectra of major blood components from the visible to near-infrared of $400{\sim}2500nm$ region. In the near-infrared, water is the main absorbing constituent. The amount of water in the sample cell varies depending on the volume of solute concentration(water displacement). We acquired water-compensated spectra by considering the variation of water volume depending on the variation of analyze concentration. Those spectra show inherent absorption peaks of analyzes and linearity with respect to concentration. We selected wavelengths for non-invasive measurement of hemoglobin concentration considering the scattering effect of tissue and the interference of other blood components.

  • The content of lipid or moisture and index of erythema or melanin on each facial part of 170 urban middle-aged women without dermic disease was measured by non-invasive method. This measurement intended to understand the skin condition on each facial part of middle-aged women, and to determine the correlation between objective measured values and subjective symptom of lipid content/moisture content. The results was summarized as follows. At each facial Part, the order of moisture content was eye rims, forehead, and cheek and that of lipid content was forehead, eye rims, and cheek. The erythema index was in the order oi forehead, cheek and eye rims and melanin index, in the order of eye rims, forehead and cheek. It turned out that the middle-aged women generally lacked lipid content rather than moisture one. The objective measured values of lipid content coincided with subjective symptom of lipid type. The lipid content, erythema index and melanin index showed correlation significantly.

  • Hyperpigmentation on face is a highly anxiety-producing symptom, especially for women from the aspect of beauty. Pigmentation of the skin is related to the amount of melanin that provides protection against UV radiation. In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy is a non-invasive imaging tool allowing visualization of the skin without tissue alteration, by placing a microscopy directly on the living skin. The aim of this study was to develop the new evaluation method of whitening effects using in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy and to validate other instruments for measuring skin colors, and UV-induced hyperpigmentation was elicited on the inside skin of the forearm. It suggested that the new method for whitening effects using the confocal microscopy was useful to evaluate the de-pigmentation products and to easy for understanding to customers.

  • Growth information of crops is essential for efficient control of greenhouse environment. However, a few non-invasive and continuous monitoring methods of crop growth has been developed. A computer vision system with a CCD camera and a frame grabber was developed to conduct non-destructive and intact plant growth analyses. The developed system was evaluated by conducting the growth analysis of lettuce. A linear model that explains the relationship between the relative crop coverage by the crop canopy and dry weight of a lettuce was presented. It was shown that this measurement method could estimate the dry weight from the relative crop coverage by the crop canopy. The result also showed that there was a high correlation between the projected top leaf area and the dry weight of the lettuce.

  • We constructed an eddy current tester as education programs of electronics and computers. The tester is designed based on frequency counting of square-waves digitally, where information of phase is lost, but which is very compact. Main controller of the tester is PIC16HC84A. Other parts, detection-coils, oscillators, and stabilizers are made by us. The tester is able to detect change of order(-5) in waves of 1MHz, whose function is kept in several minutes. The measurement period is 10-20 msec in the several minutes. Using the tester, we observed narrow gaps of copper/aluminum wires, and detected resistivity difference of 1.7 or 2.7 [$10^{-8}$ $ohm^{\ast}m$].
